Space-Shaping Through Rhythmic Interventions for Teaching and Learning: Pedagogical Perspectives
Get PDFWe explore the challenges and opportunities relevant to rhythmanalytical approaches in teaching and learning through two socio-spatial and design-oriented courses with graduate and undergraduate students. Through the courses we investigate how different understandings and analyses of rhythms-through-space in comparison to rhythms-in-space generate different patterns of interventions. We also share prospects for preparing and structuring future teaching and learning that integrate time-sensitivity through constructively aligned activities supporting the development of different forms of knowledge. This work supports recent calls for greater attention to how temporality and particularly rhythms could be better understood, observed, framed, and conveyed. In the foreground is the need to improve how we guide students' research through design-oriented learning experiences. For this we provide frameworks bringing together concepts from rhythmanalysis and constructive alignment. We draw on comparative and case study experiences from 2022 and the winter of 2023/2024 involving interdisciplinary bachelor-level and master-level courses, respectively. Our cases wrangle with the relationships between socio-spatial and temporal scales that steer or constrain rhythmic patterns expressed in students' analyses and design interventions. From an instructional standpoint, this contribution poses the question: Which conceptual structures in design-oriented pedagogy could support rhythmanalytical approaches and capacities for future spatial planners and designers? Our final reflections discuss opportunities for improvement and evaluate how future planning pedagogy research and work could build on our experiences
Harmonizing Traditional Journalistic Values With Emerging AI Technologies: A Systematic Review of Journalist's Perception
No full textThis study investigates how news organizations perceive the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in news production, focusing on the synthesis of traditional journalistic values with AI advancements. By conducting a meta-analysis of 59 scholarly articles published between 2020 and 2024 in the field of journalism, the research examines the perceptions of journalists, editors, and decision-makers regarding AI. The primary research question explores the general findings of previous studies on journalists' perceptions of AI in their workflows and the frameworks used to reconcile AI with journalistic values. The findings indicate that AI is regarded as a transformative tool, enhancing efficiency, effectiveness, and fostering a new organizational culture. However, it raises concerns about costs and job security. Attitudes toward AI are polarized, with optimism about efficiency gains and skepticism due to potential impacts on employment and ethical standards. Three theoretical models - field theory, human-machine communication, and the technology acceptance model - are employed to understand these dynamics, with field theory addressing power shifts and human-machine communication and the technology acceptance model examining human-AI interaction. To effectively integrate AI with journalistic values, the study proposes three strategies: AI technologists should embed journalistic ethics into their processes, journalists should acquire basic AI technical skills, and collaborative platforms should be established to bridge gaps between journalists and technicians. Get PDFAm Thema Rassismus und institutioneller Kindesentzug verfolgt mein Beitrag die These, dass Familien ungleich staatlich geschützt, gefährdet und verunmöglicht werden. Auf der Grundlage von Interviews und einer Grounded-Theory-basierten Forschung im deutschsprachigen Kontext beleuchte ich diese Problemstellung an den Beispielen schlechte Wohnverhältnisse und administrative burden. Die Beispiele zeigen, wie die institutionelle Jugendhilfepraxis angesichts des Spektrums struktureller Ungleichheitsverhältnisse mit ihrem Fokus auf die elterliche Erziehungsfähigkeit marginalisierten Familien of color schadet. Ausgehend von einer Perspektive reproduktiver Gerechtigkeit stelle ich anschließend die Frage der ungleichen Verteilung von sicheren Lebensbedingungen. Ich zeige, dass institutioneller Kindesentzug einem negativen Sicherheitsverständnis folgt. Ihm fehlen Visionen von mehr Sicherheit für alle. Schließlich trete ich für ein positives Sicherheitsverständnis ein und stelle Veränderungshorizonte aus einer abolitionistischen Perspektive vor.Against the backdrop of the issues of racism and institutional child removal, the thesis of this article is that families are unequally protected as well as endangered and made impossible by the state. Based on interviews and grounded theory-based research in the German-speaking context, I introduce this problem drawing on the examples of poor housing conditions and administrative burdens. These examples show how the child welfare system harms marginalized families of colour by focussing on parenting skills against the background of a range of structural inequalities. Starting from a reproductive justice perspective, I address the question of the unequal distribution of safe living conditions. I show that institutional child removal is based on a negative understanding of safety. It lacks positive visions of more safety for all. Finally, I argue for a positive understanding of safety and present possibilities for change from an abolitionist perspective
Fighting Resistance With Data: Leveraging Digital Surveillance to Address Antibiotic Misuse in Nigeria
Get PDFAntimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a growing public health challenge in Nigeria. The pervasive misuse of antibiotics, insufficient regulatory frameworks, and inadequate surveillance systems exacerbate this issue. The existing methods for antibiotic monitoring are fragmented and inefficient, hindering the ability to detect real-time resistance patterns. This review delves into the role of digital surveillance technologies in combating AMR, taking advantage of electronic medical records (EMRs), mobile health (mHealth) applications, AI-powered analytics, and cloud-based databases to enhance data collection, prescription tracking, and policy interventions. Research conducted in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), including India and Kenya, demonstrates digital tools' efficacy in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Despite these advantages, Nigeria continues to face significant challenges related to data privacy, infrastructure limitations, financial sustainability, and a digital divide between urban and rural regions. Addressing these limitations requires implementing strategic investments in health technology, establishing robust regulatory frameworks, and fostering multi-sectoral collaboration among government agencies, private sector stakeholders, healthcare institutions, and research organisations. In this review, we strongly advocate for an approach that integrates a data-driven antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance system, facilitating real-time monitoring and policy-driven strategies. Nigeria can enhance antibiotic stewardship, mitigate resistance, and protect public health by evolving into a robust digital health ecosystem

Editorial: Temporal Entanglements, Fragmented Spaces: Planning, Politics, and Place Rhythms
Get PDFWhat does it mean for urban planners and designers to shape places through and with time? The 2020 public health restrictions highlighted the relevance of Carlos Moreno's et al. (2021) 15-minute-city concept, which outlined the need for a "chrono-urbanism" incorporating societal resilience micro-infrastructures. Notions of temporal planning, however, have deeper roots; Kevin Lynch's classic imageability (1964) and place-timing studies (1972) highlighted Planning as a temporal art, distinct from arts such as music, and his urban theorization (1984) identified three epochs of city form (the cosmic, organic, and mechanical) as successively dominant, spatiotemporal paradigms. More recently, Christopher Alexander's (2002) analyses on the "nature of order" drew attention to the importance of time and geometry for the appropriate unfolding of complexity across domains from the arts and crafts to the scales of built form. Time is implicated in Planning's capacity to effectively harness space in meeting societal needs and challenges. Given the "temporal turn" in urban planning and design, this is an appropriate juncture to reflect upon technical assumptions underlying varied approaches to place-shaping. This issue explores how currently dominant, linear-temporal modes might be influencing spatial planning and design practices, and how inclusion of diverse, forgotten, and hidden spatiotemporal narratives including from the global South could aid development of alternative theories, tools, practices, and forms. Contributions also address implications digital modes may have for education, praxis, or resilient, city visions, and what might be the contribution of temporal perspectives in addressing the slow and out-of-sight violence created by toxic geographies or urban transformations

Get PDFInszenierte Intermedialität bezeichnet ein Phänomen, bei dem mindestens zwei unterschiedliche Medien - z.B. Literatur und Malerei - innerhalb eines Mediums in Kontakt treten und sich gegenseitig inszenieren. Das Medium stellt dabei ein offenes Feld von Möglichkeiten und Spannungen dar: Eine literarische Figur erscheint, als wäre sie ein Bild, oder ein visuelles Detail beginnt zu erzählen, wie es Wörter tun. Um dieses Konzept besser zu verstehen, folgt Stella Chachali der Struktur eines Theaterstücks, in dem die medialen Körper von Schrift und Bild den Chor bilden, während die ästhetischen Kategorien, die solche Phänomene entschlüsseln, die zentralen Helden des Dramas sind. Die Kategorien wandern als nomadische Figuren zwischen unterschiedlichen Diskursen, bis sie das Feld der Intermedialität erreichen und ästhetisiert werden.
