Data diaries: Self-reported chronicles on online health platforms and the challenges for technology assessment

    Get PDF
This research article explores the ethical, social, and economic implications of online health platforms that promote participatory models of data collection and use. These platforms, often hailed as enablers for democratization of healthcare, also raise significant concerns about privacy and the commodification and exploitation of data. Based on qualitative interviews and a literature review, this study examines how such platforms influence global healthcare dynamics. While these platforms foster user empowerment, they also create environments where new forms of surveillance may emerge. This article emphasizes the importance of addressing these concerns through rigorous technology assessment, particularly in regions governed by strict data protection regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe. By examining the socio-ethical challenges posed by these platforms, the study identifies ways to ensure that the benefits of participatory platforms are distributed equitably and ethically

Socio‐Economic and Gender Differences in Post‐Secondary Pathways in the UK, Germany, and Australia

This study investigates variations in school‐to‐work transitions (SWTs) by socio‐economic status (SES), gender, and socio‐cultural context. Leveraging data from three nationally representative longitudinal panel studies, we compare the experiences of young people coming of age in the 21st century (2011 to 2023) in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia. We examine the role of different support systems that scaffold the SWT process along various post‐secondary pathways, including university, further education/vocational training, and employment tracks, with a particular focus on variations by parental education and gender. Utilizing longitudinal data from the Understanding Society Panel in the UK (N = 15,692 observations), the German Socio‐Economic Panel (GSOEP; N = 5,464), and the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey (N = 5,759), we track synthetic cohorts born between 1993 and 1995 from ages 18 to 27 in the three countries. We employ linear probability models to conduct a cross‐national comparative analysis, identifying variations in post‐secondary pathways across the three country contexts. The choice of countries is motivated by their shared status as developed economies with distinct features in their SWT systems - contrasting the neoliberal deregulatory frameworks of Britain and Australia with Germany's employment‐focused dual system. The findings reveal significant effects of parental education on post‐secondary transitions, as well as the differing roles of gender across various educational policy contexts. These results underscore the complexity of SWT when considered in different national settings. The insights generated by this analysis highlight the importance of dedicated policies to support low‐SES youth and promote gender equality in education and employment outcomes

Güterverkehr, Logistik und Raumentwicklung: Planerischer Handlungsbedarf

    Get PDF
Freight transport and logistics have a high spatial impact, but are nevertheless insufficiently addressed in urban and regional planning and are not dealt with in an integrated manner. However, planning strategies and instruments are certainly available. Integrated transport and site planning at the relevant levels of action can help to support sustainable supply and disposal for the population and the economy with stable supply chains in cities and regions

Haben Schwarze Kinder (k)eine Kindheit? Anmerkungen zur Adultification-Debatte in den USA

    No full text
The article discusses the ongoing debate in the U.S. regarding Black children under the key word 'adultification'. This term is used as a concept to critically name the fact that these children are not perceived 'as children' with the characteristics usually attributed to childhood in Europe, but as people who are more like adults. Because of its racist connotation, this attribution has serious, mostly negative and sometimes, even fatal consequences for young people. The article addresses that debate by analyzing different levels of adultification and offering other possible explanations for racial discrimination and violence against Black boys and girls. Particular importance is attached to the question how childhood is conceived, especially with regard to 'innocence' as a supposedly universal characteristic of this phase or age group

SMART 2.0: Social Media Analytics and Reporting Tool Applied to Misinformation Tracking

    Get PDF
The rapid proliferation of social media has created new data stemming from users' thoughts, feelings, and interests. However, this unprecedented growth has led to the widespread dissemination of misinformation-deliberately or inadvertently false content that can trigger dangerous societal ramifications. Visual analytics combines advanced data analytics and interactive visualizations to explore data and mine insights. This article introduces the Social Media Analytics and Reporting Tool (SMART) 2.0, detailing its application in tracking misinformation on social media. An updated version of its predecessor, SMART 2.0 enables analysts to conduct real-time surveillance of social media content along with complementary data streams, including weather patterns, traffic conditions, and emergency service reports. SMART 2.0 offers enhanced capabilities like map-based, interactive, and AI-powered features that enable researchers to visualize and understand situational changes by assessing public social posts and comments. As a misinformation classification and tracking case study, we collected public, geo-tagged tweets from multiple cities in the UK during the 2024 riots. We showcased the effectiveness of SMART 2.0's misinformation detection and tracking capabilities. Our findings show that SMART 2.0 effectively tracks and classifies misinformation using a human-in-the-loop approach

Nachhaltige Entwicklung von Schweizer Hochschulen: Das Potenzial der institutionellen Akkreditierung

    Get PDF
Using the Swiss higher education landscape as an example, this study examines the question of how institutional accreditation and the sustainability standard it contains affect the sustainable development of higher education institutions (HEIs). The aim of the study is to find out what changes institutional accreditation has brought about at Swiss HEIs in terms of sustainability. The study was carried out using an explorative, qualitative research design. The necessary data was collected via guided expert inter-views with sustainability officers from eleven Swiss HEIs and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results show that the relationship between institutional accreditation and the sustainable development of HEIs can be described as a causal mechanism or impact model. Overall, four causal mechanisms emerge: 1) In the case of weak institutional anchoring of sustainability at HEIs, institutional accreditation is a necessary condition for the sustainable development of HEIs. It brings about changes in strategies, structures and resources with regard to sustainability. 2) However, institutional accreditation may not be a prerequisite for HEIs with a weak institutional anchoring of sustainability if they succeed in being institutionally accredited by means of greenwashing. 3) In the case of HEIs with a mediocre institutional anchoring of sustainability, institutional accreditation is a sufficient and supportive condition for the sustainable development of HEIs. It can, but must not necessarily, lead to changes in strategies and structures with regard to sustainability. 4) In the case of strong institutional anchoring of sustainability at HEIs, institutional accreditation is not a condition for the sustainable development of universities and does not bring about any changes in strategies and structures with regard to sustain-ability. With regard to all four causal mechanisms, institutional accreditation and the sustain-ability standard contained therein do not cause a longer-term organizational change process at the HEIs. They do not lead to comprehensive sustainable development, to sustainability-related changes in the HEI-specific fields of action and to a culture of sustainability. Rather, institutional accreditation is handled by the HEIs as an intervention and requirement to be implemented. The aim of the HEIs is to meet the sustainability standard, whereby they achieve a certain minimum level in terms of sustainability, but without striving for fundamental sustainability-related changes

Beyond the Dutch Quota: Media Policy and Cultural Diversity in Local Video-on-Demand Production (2013-2023)

    Get PDF
Starting January 1, 2024, a new Dutch investment obligation requires that streaming services with annual revenues exceeding 10 million euros allocate 5% of their turnover to Dutch content production. This policy aligns with similar obligations in countries like France, Germany, and Italy, which introduced tax-based investment obligations for streaming platforms before the 2018 revision of the EU's Audiovisual Media Service Directive (AVMSD). The AVMSD established a 30% European content quota for subscription video-on-demand (SVoD) platforms and permitted member states to implement revenue-based investment obligations to support local industries. Our article situates the Netherlands as a small-screen media industry and the base of Netflix's first European headquarters. We contextualise the Dutch investment obligation within the evolving European media landscape, examining shifts in diversity and inclusion in Dutch VoD fiction productions from 2013 to 2023. We assess production trends by type and genre by critically analysing policy frameworks and production data from international SVoD platforms (e.g., Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+) and domestic steaming services (Videoland, NPO Start/Plus). Our findings reveal significant gaps in genre diversity and underinvestment in high-cost historical dramas and fantasy/horror/sci-fi series, highlighting a decade-long reliance on mainstream-oriented genres, including drama and crime series. This context underscores the importance of the new regulation in addressing these disparities and critically examines the requirements of the new regulation. Our article contributes to understanding the state of Dutch VoD production and evaluates the potential of the investment obligation to foster cultural and genre diversity in Dutch VoD fiction
