Digital Archive from an Archaeological Evaluation at Airedale Close, Leire, Leicestershire, April to May 2023
This collection consists of images, a spreadsheet and a vector graphic from an archaeological evaluation by University of Leicester Archaeological Services. Work occurred on land off Airedale Close, Leire, Leicestershire, between April and May 2023 in advance of residential development. The five trenches contained archaeology from the medieval to the post-medieval period in the form of re cut and remodelled ditches, possibly relating to activity in a toft and croft
Data from a Test Pit Evaluation at Abingdon Abbey Buildings, Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, July 2024
This collection consists of images, site records, reports, Harris matrices, spreadsheets, GIS and 3D data from a test pit evaluation on the site of a group of buildings known as Abingdon Abbey Buildings, Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. The works were commissioned by Friends of Abingdon Abbey Buildings to Oxford Archaeology, to inform a proposed enhancement project to create an accessible community centre for the visual and performing arts. The work comprised the excavation of six trenches and took place between the 8th and 19th July 2024
Digital Archive from an Archaeological Evaluation at Marvells, 5 High Street, Stock, Essex, November 2024
This collection comprises images, site records, survey drawings, the Written Scheme of Investigation and project brief from an archaeological evaluation at Marvells, 5 High Street, Stock, Essex. Work was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in November 2024. Previous investigations have uncovered significant archaeological remains close to the development site. Notably, these include the remains of a post-medieval tile kiln immediately east of the site. The current excavations revealed two post-medieval debris layers dominated by peg-tile fragments but also containing pieces of brick. This material and the presence of a vitrified brick fragment, found in a pit, are likely to be associated with the nearby tile kiln
Digital Archive from a Geophysical Survey at Wandleys Lane, Fontwell, West Sussex, November 2022
This collection comprises geophysics data, and GIS data from a geophysical survey at Wandleys Lane, Fontwell, West Sussex. The works were conducted by Museum of London Archaeology (MoLA) in November 2022. The magnetometer survey detected a c.100m diameter ring of pits, which are likely to be the post settings for a timber circle or palisaded enclosure. It also detected a square ditched enclosure and an associated set of ditches defining small land parcels and a possible trackway. The exact dating of the features is uncertain, but the ring of pits is perhaps Neolithic or Bronze Age (if a timber circle) or Neolithic to Iron Age (if a palisade), whereas the ditched enclosure and other ditches could be Bronze Age, Iron Age or Roman
Digital Archive from an Archaeological Monitoring and Recording at Bantam House, Church Lane, White Roding, Essex, October 2024
This collection comprises images, survey drawings and Written Scheme of Investigation from an archaeological monitoring and recording at Bantam House, Church Lane, White Roding, Essex. Work was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in October 2024. Archaeological monitoring was carried out during groundworks for the construction of a new dwelling which lies inside the boundary a homestead moated site (EHER 4359), within the curtilage of the Grade II Listed Old Rectory and immediately east of the Grade II* St Martin's Church, comprising a single rectangular enclosure of medieval date. The archaeological monitoring revealed previously unknown continuation of the moat to the north of the site, as well as four post-medieval/modern pits
Digital Archive from an Archaeological Evaluation at London Road, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, May to June 2022
This collection consists of images, spreadsheets, a report, GIS and site record data from an archaeological evaluation by Wessex Archaeology. Work occurred on a 15.25 hectare parcel of land located to the south of London Road, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, from May to June 2022. The evaluation identified occupation from the Iron Age to the late Romano-British period, with little activity in later periods. Artefacts recovered during the evaluation provide evidence of activity during the 1st century BC to 4th century AD, with occupation of the nucleated settlement occurring throughout the Romano-British period, with a focus towards the later part of the period
Unlocking Old Windsor: An Assessment of Brian Hope-Taylor's 1953-58 Excavation Archive from Kingsbury, Old Windsor, Berkshire
This collection comprises image, text and spreadsheet data from the Unlocking Old Windsor project which made an assessment of Brian Hope-Taylor's 1953-58 excavation archive from Kingsbury, Old Windsor, Berkshire. Between 1953 and 1958 the late Brian Hope-Taylor undertook six seasons of excavation at the site. Discoveries included a remarkable sequence of Saxon and Early Norman remains from the 7th - 11th-centuries, reported at the time as including a Mid-Saxon settlement, a 9th-century mill leat and watermill, and a series of high-quality buildings and finds indicative of a Late Saxon and Early Norman royal complex. The Unlocking Old Windsor Project, funded by Historic England and undertaken as a collaboration between the University of Reading and Berkshire Archaeological Society, was created to take a substantial step forward to rehabilitate Hope-Taylor's excavations and to realise its potential as a site of national importance. The project sets out to consolidate, secure and digitally unify the archive and to analyse a key sample of the records to generate, for the first time, an informed archaeological narrative of the site and a robust evaluation of its potential for future research
Digital Archive from Archaeological Monitoring and Recording along Little St. Mary's Street and Hall Street, Long Melford, Suffolk, January-May 2024
This collection comprises images, spreadsheets, and GIS data from a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording during groundworks associated with the Anglian Water Long Melford Main Reinforcement along Little St. Mary's Street and Hall Street, Long Melford, Suffolk. This work was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology between January and May 2024. The results provided a good topographical and archaeological profile down the full length of Long Melford's main thoroughfare, with evidence of Roman and medieval/post-medieval remains. The depth at which these remains were encountered below the modern street level, when compared to the relative height of extant medieval and early post-medieval buildings flanking either side of the road, suggests that the ground either side of the Long Melford's main thoroughfare has been built-up considerably in the post-Roman period
Digital Archive from Archaeological Monitoring and Recording at Britannia Car Park, Britannia Way, Colchester, Essex, November 2024
This collection comprises images, survey drawings and project brief from an archaeological monitoring and recording at Britannia Car Park, Britannia Way, Colchester, Essex. Work was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in November 2024. The work involved excavation of three 1 metre square trial-pits along the train station's northern wall. The trial-pits were located just outside of the precinct of St Botolph's Priory, with other archaeological remains, principally Roman, in the vicinity of the development site. However, all groundworks impacted on only modern (19th-20th century) remains and one undated layer at the base of trial-pit 1. The modern remains are associated with the industrial history of the site
Digital Archive from an Archaeological Evaluation and Excavation at Main Road, Kelsale cum Carlton, Suffolk, 2020
This collection comprises site images, GIS data and a database from an archaeological evaluation and excavation at land off Main Road, Kelsale cum Carlton, Suffolk. The works were carried out by Cotswold Archaeology in August 2020, and October to November 2020 respectively. The evaluation phase identified a series of ditches, of which, two dated to the medieval period. The later excavation identified early medieval activity across the site in the form of ditches, gullies, pits and a small group of possible stake holes
