Digital Archive from an Archaeological Excavation at Aldi, Crudwell Road, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, January-April 2022

    No full text
This collection comprises images, spreadsheets, databases, and GIS data from an archaeological excavation at the site of a new Aldi food store on Crudwell Road (A429), Malmesbury, Wiltshire. This work was undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology between January and April 2021. Late Prehistoric remains indicative of the edge of a rural settlement comprised two poorly preserved roundhouses, one located within a possibly trapezoidal enclosure which extended west beyond the excavated area. There was subsequently a probable hiatus of activity until the Roman period when three successive phases of Early Roman ditched enclosures were created during the mid 1st-2nd centuries AD. The latest Early Roman phase seems to represent the most widespread reorganisation of the farmstead with a post-built structure constructed within one enclosure and an east/west droveway between. In the late 2nd to 4th centuries AD, a large sub-rectangular enclosure was dug to the east of the north/south boundary. Significantly, it is considered that this boundary probably represented the western boundary of the Late Roman villa estate

    No full text
This collection comprises images and a report from an archaeological desk based assessment regarding Wrexham Gateway, Wrexham. This work was undertaken by Civic Heritage in 2025. The scheduled remains of Wat's Dyke are to the north and south of the site, indicating that the projected line of the dyke is through the west of the site. Remains may include the 19th-century Wrexham Station, the original Wrexham, Mold and Connah's Quay Railway Station and railway line (including a turntable), and steam saw mill. Any such remains that do exist within the site are likely to be of low significance. Further excavation may be necessary if significant archaeological remains are encountered during the archaeological monitoring and recording

Digital Archive from an Archaeological Excavation at Trinity Lane, Chipping Sodbury, South Gloucestershire, May to June 2022

This collection comprises site images (including images of skeletal human remains), a report, spreadsheet and GIS data, and a database from an archaeological excavation undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology at Trinity Lane, Chipping Sodbury, South Gloucestershire between May and June 2022. Earliest evidence of human activity comprised two residual prehistoric worked flints, one datable to the Mesolithic or Early Neolithic period, and a small pit of Bronze Age date. Occupation began in the Late Iron Age-Early Roman transition period, when a small unenclosed settlement comprising at least two roundhouses was established. By the end of the 1st century AD the structures had been replaced by a similar unenclosed settlement comprising six penannular ditches; possible roundhouses or small stock pens; a small rectangular enclosure, several ditches and dispersed discrete features

Digital Archive from Photographic and Laser Scanning Surveys at 9-13 Meadow Street, Sheffield, 2024 and 2025

    No full text
This archive comprises images, site records, text, vector and laser scanning data from a historic building recording at the former William Rowland Ltd site, 9-13 Meadow Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. This work was undertaken by Wessex Archaeology in August and October 2024 and January 2025. The historic building recording took the form of a photographic survey supplemented by floor plan drawings generated from a laser scan metric survey. The former William Rowland Ltd buildings were built in the mid 20th century between 1948 and 1967, with at least one phase of construction around 1958‐60, and were designed by the Sheffield architects Elden, Minns & Co Ltd. However, Buildings 3 and 6 and the brick boundary wall along Edward Street incorporated multiple phases of older brickwork which have been interpretated as remnants of the early 18th and 19th-century buildings that used to stand on the site. A large workshop space used for refined metal processing encompassed Building 2, Building 9, the ground floor of Building 3 and part of Building 1, with further workshop/warehouse spaces in the north and south sheds of Buildings 4-5 and 6. The offices were largely contained on the first floor, with storerooms, kitchen canteen, and toilet and shower facilities on both floors within Buildings 1 and 3
