No full textThis collection consists of site images (including aerial photography), and GIS data from an archaeological evaluation and excavation at Castle Cary, Somerset. Works were undertaken by Cotswold Archaeology between August and September 2023. A small excavation area was opened over the known location of the medieval castle keep. This area exposed parts of the northern, southern and western walls of the keep, as well as an internal wall and floor surfaces. Stratified dating evidence associated with the keep was almost entirely 11th-12th century in date

The historic building and archaeological monitoring and recording identified a number of features reflecting the history and development of Higher Hunnacott. The vast majority of the site was covered by evidence of post-medieval activity, largely 19th century in date, but with possible earlier origins

No full textThis collection comprises images from a Heritage Assessment and Level 1 Visual Historic Building Recording at Scheduled Barrows and Second World War D-Day Camp within Came Estate, Bincombe, Dorset. The work was carried out by Cotswold Archaeology in February 2024. The work forms part of a wider conservation strategy for six scheduled barrows located in Came Wood (NHLE: 1002742) and aims to enhance the current understanding of the Bronze Age funerary monuments within the Site. The project includes desk-based research, geophysical survey, landscape survey, and also historic building recording of the surviving remains of Second World War D-Day camp within both woods. The site lies within an area of extensive prehistoric funerary activity along the Dorset Ridgeway. Monuments located along this Ridgeway are characterised by their diversity in form and type, and survive in remarkable condition. From the 19th century onwards the site comprised the woodland plantations of Came Wood and Down Wood. These were used to conceal two temporary camps during the Second World War, in preparation for the D-Day landings. A building recording record was made of the built fabric of these former camps within the site, which survive alongside the scheduled and unscheduled barrows

No full textThis collection comprises images, reports, site records, GIS, spreadsheet, and database data from archaeological investigations at the site of a new access road for the former Dunsfold Airfield, now partially redeveloped as Dunsfold Park industrial estate in Surrey. Oxford Archaeology was initially commissioned by Land Use Consultants to undertake an archaeological evaluation in February 2020. They were later commissioned by Dunsfold Airport Limited to undertake an archaeological excavation from June to July 2022. This site adds to the corpus of known late Iron Age to Roman transitionary period sites with rectangular enclosures in Surrey. Perhaps more significant is the cluster of animal cremations

No full textThis collection comprises images from Archaeological Monitoring and Recording at St John's Hospital Chantry, Spitalgate Lane, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. The work was carried out by Cotswold Archaeology in October 2024. The programme of archaeological monitoring and recording took place during geotechnical investigation of the footings of the columns and walls of St John's Hospital Chantry. The stratigraphical units encountered across the site were consistent with alluvial deposits mapped by the British Geological Survey (BGS), comprising; river terrace deposits and alluvial deposits associated with the former course of the River Churn, and made ground. A deposit possibly representing an episode of ground make-up or levelling, undertaken prior to the construction of John's Hospital Chantry, was identified overlying these deposits in Test Pit 1, located in the north-eastern part of the standing building. The precise date of this deposit remains unclear, although environmental evidence recovered from this deposit indicates that it is of broad post-Roman date. Additionally, within the test pits, limestone foundations for two of the arcade columns, a half-column and walls at the eastern and western ends of the building were identified
