No full textThis collection comprises images, site records, a report, spreadsheets, CAD data, and photogrammetry from an archaeological evaluation at the Minster Church of St Thomas, Newport, Isle of Wight. This work was undertaken by Oxford Archaeology in August 2019. The evaluation revealed a number of archaeologically significant deposits and structures associated with and pre-dating the existing mid-19th-century church. Two foundation structures were revealed that were stratigraphically proven to be earlier than the present 19th-century church and in situ burials were also uncovered

No full textThis collection comprises images, reports, and site records from an archaeological evaluation on the land south of New Street, Stradbroke, Suffolk. This work was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd. in September and October 2020. The earliest dated features were two shallow, intercutting pits from which were recovered four small sherds of pottery. The sherds had no diagnostic features, but their fabric suggests that they may be Early Saxon in date although the similarity in the fabric type to some Iron Age pottery fabrics precludes definitive dating of the pottery. There was also a system of small ditches possibly associated with an east to west-aligned ditch to the south. Finally, there was a large post-medieval ditch that corresponds with a boundary shown on the 1840 Tithe map of the area, bordering the eastern edge of a former lane that once linked New Street with Wilby Road

This work was undertaken by Northern Archaeological Associates in June 2022. Archaeological investigations within Area 3 recovered evidence of an Iron Age settlement. Investigations within Area 4 revealed evidence for activity of a likely Iron Age date including three pits and part of an enclosure complex or field system that contained evidence for iron smelting and smithing

No full textThis collection comprises images, site records, and CAD files from an archaeological evaluation. This was carried out by Colchester Archaeological Trust in February 2021 at the former Lexden Springs School and adjacent Fire Station, off Halstead Road, Colchester, Essex, CO3 3PZ. The two trial-trenches were undertaken to determine the precise location of the Shrub End Dyke/Triple Dyke which runs through the development site.
If circumstances permitted, thorough excavation of these ditches in the future would not only allow their profiles to be accurately recorded and compared to those from 1961, but has the potential for finds and dating evidence to be recovered, and for the exact route, construction and form of the dyke to be better understood. However, evidence from the current works indicate that the banks have been completely levelled within the development site

No full textThis collection comprises spreadsheets, primary site records, site photographs, sketches, photogrammetry 3D models, harris matrices, digital x-rays, and specialist reports from archaeological recording undertaken at Blackgrounds North, Culworth Road, Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire. These works were carried out by MHI for Fusion-JV on behalf of High Speed 2 Ltd from March to October 2021. The work was undertaken within two adjacent parcels of land (C31048 and C31049) which were located across two former fields. The site collectively covered a total area of 3.86ha and the site code was 1C20BLGAR. In the Blackgrounds North AR areas there were substantial archaeological remains dating from the middle Iron Age into the Roman period. This consisted of part of a substantial middle to late Iron Age agglomerate settlement which spanned both areas and also continued into the adjacent Blackgrounds East and Central site. The aims of the archaeological investigation were to further understand the Iron Age settlement. The Archaeological Recording aimed to recover more dating evidence to investigate the nature and phasing of the settlement and included an appropriate percentage of hand investigation in order to recover sufficient material to be able to properly refine the dating of features
