No full textThis collection consists of images, databases, GIS data and a spreadsheet from a trial-trench evaluation and an archaeological excavation by Cotswold Archaeology. Work occurred on land at Broken Furrow, Warwick Road, Banbury, Oxfordshire from March to May 2021.The fieldwork results indicate that the site saw a relatively short-lived but intensive level of activity during the early to mid 1st century AD. The pottery assemblage from the site was dominated by wares typical of the Late Iron Age to Early Roman period. An absence of fully Romanised pottery suggests that the use of the enclosures did not continue into the 2nd century

No full textThis collection consists of site records from historic building recording work at the Spanish City Theatre, Whitley Bay, Tyneside. The works were conducted by Adept Building Consultancy Ltd between February and March 2024, prior to redevelopment and alteration to the site into a new leisure, retail, food/drink and entertainment offering. The change of use is the latest phase of redevelopment for the building, having originally been constructed as a theatre, converted to the Empress Ballroom shortly after and then being converted into a bingo hall. The record helps to capture and document the building prior to a further evolutionary stage of development and the conversion to retail/leisure and entertainment space

No full textThis collection comprises images, site records and GIS from a Level 2 Descriptive Historic Building Recording and Archaeological Watching Brief at Parsonage Farm, Nymet Rowland, Crediton, Devon. The work was carried out by ISCA Archaeology from January to April 2024 as part of Listed Building Consent Application 23/01620/LBC. The application includes internal works to the ground floor and reconfiguration of first-floor layout; replacement of existing concrete render with lime render, installation of a French drain and soakaway, and installation of air source heat pump units to the side of the Grade II Listed farmhouse. A total of 4 trenches were dug outside of the property to accommodate the French Drain and soakaway; 3 trenches followed the boundary of the property, and one was within the courtyard. The remaining groundworks focused on the reduction of 3 rooms (the utility room, kitchen and living room) down to a required formation level. The results of the Archaeological Monitoring and Recording Brief indicated that no features or artefacts were present that related to any activity that pre-dated the construction of the present farmhouse, either internally or externally. The four external trenches revealed no archaeological deposits, with the exception of the cobbled surface noted within the courtyard to the northern edge of the property (Trench 4). This cobbled surface is likely to either be contemporary with,or post-dating, the construction of the farmhouse. A fragment of post medieval clay tobacco pipe was recovered from layer sealed by the cobbled surface. Within the parlour an extant cobbled floor surface was noted which extended across the entire room, except for an area behind the front door. The cobbled floor surface clearly butted the present walls of the parlour. Furthermore, clay tobacco pipe recovered from the deposit underlying the cobbles suggests that the surface is later than the existing building and post-medieval in date

No full textThis collection comprises image, spreadsheet and GIS data from an archaeological evaluation of land at Upton's Gardens, Whitminster, Gloucestershire. Cotswold Archaeology carried out the work in January 2024. A total of five trenches were excavated. Evidence of medieval or post-medieval agricultural activity was identified in trenches excavated in the central part of the site. Two undated ditches were identified in a trench excavated in the south-western part of the site. Two large pits, one of which contained modern artefactual material, and a modern concrete-lined posthole, were identified in trenches excavated in the south-western and northeastern parts of the site respectively

No full textThis collection comprises raw and minimally processed magnetometry data, a greyscale image of processed magnetometry data and a CAD drawing from a geophysical survey at land off Holt Lane, Hook, Hampshire. Work was carried out by Archaeological Surveys Ltd between March and June 2024. There are a number of linear and rectilinear, ditch-like anomalies and discrete positive responses could relate to pit-like features and/or areas of burning. Strongly magnetic debris in the southern part of the site is associated with land reinstatement of a M3 works site. No full textThis collection consists of images, spreadsheets and GIS data from an archaeological evaluation by Cotswold Archaeology. Work occurred at Hanwell Solar Farm, Banbury, Oxford, from November and December 2023. Archaeological features were identified in 26 of the trenches; the earliest activity corresponded to the Roman period. Little evidence for activity pre-dating the Roman period was identified during the fieldwork and comprised a small assemblage of broadly late prehistoric pottery, and one residual flint flake. Medieval to post-medieval activity was also identified across the site. The remains of ridge and-furrow agricultural systems were encountered in 33 of the trenches. A number of ditches and pits identified during the fieldwork remain undated; these features did not contain any artefactual materia

The earliest cut features and deposits were dated by pottery to the later Iron Age and belonged to an open settlement. These included several roundhouses clustered around a central area containing small enclosures

Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation in March 2022. The evaluation identified three main phases of activity. These included Prehistoric (Middle Bronze Age) field systems along with two ring ditches which were identified on the geophysical survey. A later occupation dating to the Middle Iron Age period was identified towards the road at the west and post-Medieval quarrying activity was encountered around the south, east and west of the site
