Site Images and GIS Data from an Archaeological Evaluation at Chinalls Close, Finmere, Cherwell, Oxfordshire, August 2022

    No full text
This collection consists of site images and GIS data from an archaeological evaluation at Chinalls Close, Finmere, Cherwell, Oxfordshire. The works were conducted by Cotswold Archaeology in August 2022. Archaeological features were identified in 8 trenches. Furrows of possible post-medieval date; four undated ditches and a pit; and a further ditch containing possible Late Iron Age pottery were recorded. The results of the evaluation correlated well with the geophysical survey, with the exception of the south-western part of the site, where concentration of naturally occurring gravel were originally interpreted as putative prehistoric features

This collection consists of site images, a CAD vector drawing, and a report from an archaeological evaluation and watching brief at Elsecar Ironworks, Elsecar Heritage Centre, Elsecar, Rotheram, South Yorkshire. Works were carried out by York Archaeology between January and February 2023. The evaluation recorded buried remains of structures associated with the mid-19th-century expansion of Elsecar Ironworks. The state of preservation of the structural remains was generally good, where these had not been truncated by 20th-century intrusions. The functions of the structural remains revealed were not always clear, but the evaluation has indicated that remains of the Elsecar Ironworks survive within the yard area, with some evidence to confirm that part of this area was occupied by puddling furnaces

Digital Archive from Archaeological Works at Shute Cross, Shobrooke, Mid Devon, Devon, 2018 to 2019

This collection consists of images, geophysical and site record data from a geophysical survey, archaeological evaluation, and a strip map and sample by South West Archaeology Ltd. Work occurred on a poultry building and a temporary dwelling at Shute Cross, Shobrooke, Mid Devon, Devon from 2018 to 2019. The geophysical survey identified multiple features that tie in with the boundaries shown on the historic mapping, as well as multiple linear anomaly groups. The form and alignment of these features suggests that they represent elements of the historic agricultural landscape. The archaeological evaluation at Shute Cross identified a total of seven features reflecting the prehistoric and later history of the area. These features include an Iron Age pit and possible associated post-hole, The strip, map and sample identified a single ditch that ran on an east-west alignment across the southern part of the excavation area . The recovery of flint from the ditch may indicate that it is of prehistoric origin, though its alignment with the southern boundary of the field probably suggests that it is medieval or post medieval in origin with residual artefacts

Data from an Archaeological Evaluation on the Land North of A14 Junction 56, Wherstead, Suffolk, November 2019

This collection comprises images, reports, and site records from an archaeological trial trench evaluation on the land north of A14 Junction 56, Wherstead, Suffolk. This work was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology in November 2019. The evaluation identified a small pit containing five sherds of probable Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age pottery. The remains of a field system were also encountered but there was no conclusive evidence by which to date the field system. Fourteen struck flints spread across the evaluation area ranged in date from the Mesolithic to the Late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age, indicating the potential for low-level earlier prehistoric activity

This collection consists of images, text, spreadsheets, databases, GIS and site record data from a trial-trench evaluation by Oxford Archaeology. Work occurred on Land off the B480, Chalgrove Oxfordshire, in September 2022. The trial trenching confirmed the presence of the enclosure system identified by the geophysical survey. Dating to the late Bronze Age-early Iron Age, the enclosure is likely to be associated with domestic or settlement activity. Features within the enclosure include postholes and storage pits

Site Images and GIS Data from an Archaeological Evaluation at Braunston Road, Oakham, Rutland, June 2023

This collection consists of site images, and GIS data from an archaeological evaluation at Braunston Road, Oakham, Rutland. Works were carried out by Cotswold Archaeology in June 2023, prior to development. The fieldwork results confirmed those of a preceding geophysical survey, with the rectilinear anomaly correlating with ditches crossing trenches 13 and 14. These produced pottery dating to the Middle to Late Iron Age. A quern stone fragment and an assemblage of animal bone was also recovered, including bone commonly associated with waste from the early stages of the butchery process. Cropmarks recorded by the HER to the west of the site suggest that the enclosure formed part of a wider field/ enclosure system. The presence of the quern stone fragment and evidence for early-stage butchery waste further suggests that the enclosure was located in relative proximity to domestic and/or food processing areas
