    EMOLight: Immersive Visual Experience for the Audibly Impaired

    In this paper, we introduce EMOLight, an innovative AI-driven ambient lighting solution that enhances viewer immersion, especially for the audibly impaired, by dynamically synchronising with the emotional content of audio cues and sounds. Our proposed solution leverages YAMNet deep learning model and Plutchik's emotion-colour theory to provide real-time audio emotion recognition, user-specific customisation, and multi-label classification for a personalised and engaging experience. This synchronisation enriches the viewing experience by making it more engaging and inclusive. This research demonstrates the feasibility and potential of EMOLight, paving the way for a future where technology adapts to diverse sensory needs and preferences, revolutionising the way we experience and interact with media

    There is a plethora of research exploring males’ reluctance to seek support for mental ill-health. At the same time, ever rising numbers of university students experiencing mental ill-health are being reported. Researchers are now looking to generate knowledge of what works for male students in terms of improving their mental health. This study reports on a small-scale evaluation of a male-only peer support group: ‘Talk Club’ (TC), based in one university in northern England, in order to understand the impacts on its male student peer facilitators: ‘Captains.’ A focus group was conducted with the three TC Captains. Data was analysed using a thematic codebook approach aligned with two research questions addressing the impacts on the Captains and the enabling factors. Findings reveal that the student Captains experienced positive outcomes which they ascribed to undertaking their role in TCs, including improved relationships, validation of interests and emotions, and skills for the future. The Captains also encountered challenges related to establishing boundaries and navigating unexpected attendee revelations. This research offers a unique contribution to knowledge, by reporting on the impacts of the TC group on the male students who acted as peer facilitators

    Risk factors for the development of knee osteoarthritis across the lifespan: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

    ObjectiveTo identify and quantify risk factors for incident knee osteoarthritis (KOA) across the lifespan.MethodsThis systematic review and meta-analysis identified eligible studies from seven electronic databases and three registries. Longitudinal cohort studies or randomised controlled trials evaluating participants who developed incident symptomatic and/or radiographic KOA were included. Two independent reviewers completed data screening and extraction. Estimates were pooled using a random effects model and reported as odds ratio (OR), hazard ratio (HR), or risk ratio (RR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to determine the certainty of evidence. Population attributable fractions (PAFs) were calculated, including risk factors significantly associated with radiographic KOA based on the pooled meta-analysis and where we could determine communality scores using existing clinical datasets.ResultsWe identified 132 studies evaluating >150 risk factors. Higher body mass index (BMI), previous knee injury, older age and high bone mineral density were associated with an increased risk of incident radiographic KOA based on the pooled analysis [OR (95% CI): 1.56 (1.25, 1.95), 3.02 (1.93, 4.71), 1.15 (1.00, 1.33) and 1.82 (1.12, 2.94), respectively], with moderate-to-high certainty. Two risk factors (overweight/obesity and previous knee injury) accounted for 14% of incident radiographic KOA. Other modifiable risk factors including occupational physical activity also contribute to radiographic or symptomatic KOA.ConclusionNovel strategies addressing known modifiable risk factors including overweight/obesity, knee injuries and occupational physical activity are needed to reduce overall burden of KOA.Systematic review registrationPROSPERO ID: CRD42023391187 FUNDING: Sydney Musculoskeletal Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health, The University of Sydney

    Influence of treatment technique on the effectiveness of nanolime as a consolidant for low-porosity limestones

    Due to its high compatibility with any carbonate substrate and acknowledged efficiency, nanolime is one of the most promising stone consolidation products on the market, to date. However, its performance remains limited when applied on limestones characterised by low porosity (η < 20%). It has been acknowledged that various factors can affect the performance of nanolime. In this paper, the impact of the treatment technique on the efficiency of a nanolime-based consolidation treatment was investigated. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory on limestones provided by Canterbury Cathedral (England) and on archaeological limestone samples supplied by the British Museum (England), using commercial alcoholic nanolime applied with a tailored treatment process. This study shows that the performance of the treatment is affected by the pre-wetting action, the method of application, and by the retention and carbonation techniques. The treatment performance was assessed with the phenolphthalein indicator, the scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and the drilling resistance measurement system (DRMS). Results showed that a better treatment efficiency is achieved when the following technique is observed: (a) pre-wetting the substrate with a combination of steam cleaning and ultrasonic air humidification; (b) applying the nanolime in an enclosed environment until surface saturation; (c) humidifying the treated surface with a retention pad; and (d) curing the treated substrate at 70% RH (±5%) and ~1% CO2

    Social media and online hate in sport: A case study of association football

    The aim of this chapter is to explore the relationship between sport and online hate, via a case study of the work of Tackling Online Hate in Football (TOHIF). In elucidating the challenge of online hate in sport, the chapter showcases how TOHIF is responding to online hate through a range of timely and innovative methodologies and interventions, including accessing large-scale longitudinal empirical datasets, developing tools and techniques to identify and classify online abuse, undertaking over 120 interviews and focus groups with professional male and female footballers from across the UK, a major survey of football fans, interviews with player care professionals, and interviews and educational workshops with sport journalists. The chapter advocates that scholarly research must play a leading role in combatting online hate; initially by deepening the understanding of it, and additionally through shaping the public discourse and education on how to respond to it. We finish this chapter by advocating for some blue sky thinking, and identifying some core areas for future investment

    This article attempts to widen the debate about the future of probation by way of an exploration of the role of probation pracademics within the context of the Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP). Reflecting upon our own experiences of probation education (as former probation practitioners, now PQiP tutors and probation researchers), we draw upon transformative pedagogy to argue that pracademics are ideally placed to influence and shape the future of probation as a distinct occupation by enactment of 3 crucial functions within probation education: (re)formulation of probation values, building bridges between theory and praxis and protection of the ‘honourable profession’

    Leadership for professional development: supporting schools and empowering teachers to be professional development ready

    In this strand of the study, we aimed to gain understanding of factors within the school environment which influence the implementation of professional development in schools and what school leaders can do to help create environments where teachers are able to engage in and implement their learning from professional development. We carried out a systematic literature review, looking at national and international literature from education and other professional contexts, using theoretical framings relating to professional development and change readiness. Through a rigorous search and analysis process, we mapped the field of professional development implementation in the school environment, looking at a range of studies across different national and school contexts and forms and content of professional development. We understood leadership in terms of role and process, rather than formal function, thereby including senior leaders, middle leaders and teachers as leaders driving and implementing professional development with and for their staff. Therefore, the review recommendations deliberately do not focus on different leader roles and hierarchies, but rather capture what the role of professional development leader at any level in the school may look like. Our findings offer insights into the body of evidence which currently exists for the leadership of professional development within the school environment, highlighting the prevalence of particular forms of research, reported outcomes and types of professional development. We identify three leadership dimensions: trusting leadership, engaged leadership and learning leadership. Through these dimensions, our findings demonstrate the complex role of school leaders in the implementation of professional development, navigating balances of formal and informal roles, direction and autonomy, and individualisation and collaboration. Using evidence from the literature we analysed, we explore how school leaders can adopt policies and practices which build a shared vision for professional development and set its direction, promote and maintain participation in professional development activities, and improve teachers’ engagement in professional development

    Jump performance and field-based anaerobic capacity profiles of international standard amateur mixed martial arts athletes

    Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combat sport requiring the ability to complete repeated high impulse actions for 9-25 minutes. This study reports proxy measures of lower body neuromuscular performance and anerobic capacities of tier 3 standard amateur MMA athletes for the first time. A cohort of n=9 female (age = 20.5±2.8 years) and n=12 male (age=20.8±1.6 years) participants completed squat jumps, countermovement jumps, and drop jumps to provide proxy measures of their neuromuscular performance and reactive strength. The cohort also completed the special judo fitness test (SJFT) as a proxy for their anaerobic capacity. Participant’s MMA success rates were determined using their MMA bout winning %. Relationships between physiological measures and success rates were calculated using Pearson’s r correlation coefficient (p<0.05). Both male and female jump characteristics were generally equal to athletes from other combat sports, but below athletes from non-combat sports. Males and females were found to be ‘poor/very poor’ in the majority of SJFT factors. Female success rate was found to have very large relationships to jump variables (SJ r = 0.713; CMJ r = 0.794; CMJ-AS r = 0.718; all p<0.05). Male success rate was found to have very large relationships to SJFT factors (# of throws r = 0.732; SJFT index r = - 0.648; both p<0.05). These results indicate that MMA success is dependent on different physiological factors in each sex. These results may also highlight areas for concern in MMA athlete’s physiological performance standards

    Digital Twin and Data Visualisation for Collaborative Workspaces(1st)

    This chapter demonstrates the potentiality of implementing the concepts of digital twins and real-time data visualisation for a collaborative and climate-resilient workspace environment in Bangladesh. It indicates how these concepts can be integrated into the existing and new buildings with the help of Building Energy Management System (BEMS) and low powered Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Firstly, the chapter includes field evidence and computer-simulated data of working environments of three factories in Bangladesh revealing the system gaps among building envelope design, environmental condition, workers’ perception and building management. Secondly, it compares them with case studies in a developed country where digital twin, BEMS and IoT technologies are already being implemented and real-time data visualisations are being used by both building users and managers to ensure a collaborative, comfortable and safe working environment. While digital twins, i.e., a digital representation of existing physical buildings and cities, are being implemented in developed countries, this chapter thirdly contextualises these concepts for built environments in tropical Bangladesh through an analytic diagram and illustrates how the real-time data visualisation of the indoor environment, workers’ feedback and work efficiency with smart displays can ensure an energy-efficient, collaborative and climate-resilient working environment. The chapter ends with outlining possible future collaborations and potentials towards climate-resilient and zero-carbon societies
