Responsible research impact: Ethics for making a difference

The need for ethical guidelines that support and empower researchers who aim to enhance the societal impact of research has become critical. Recognizing the growing emphasis on research impact by governments and funding bodies worldwide, this article investigates the often overlooked ethical dimensions of generating and evaluating research impact. We focus on ethical issues and practices that are specific to the process of intentionally working to develop societal impacts from research. We highlight the complexities and ethical dilemmas encountered when researchers engage with non-academic groups, such as policymakers, industries, and local communities. Through a combination of literature review and insights from participatory workshops, the article identifies key issues and offers a new ethical framework for responsible research impact. This framework aims to guide researchers and institutions through the process of limiting potential harm while delivering societal benefits in a way that is realistic and balanced. The aim is to establish ethical practices for engagement and impact, without making the process so onerous that researchers are less likely to undertake such activities. The article concludes with actionable recommendations for policymakers, research funders, research performing organizations, institutional review boards and/or ethics committees, and individual researchers. Making use of such recommendations can foster an ethically responsible approach to research impact across academic disciplines

    Chartism

The Chartist movement continues to occupy a central place in the history and historiography of modern Britain. As the first mass working-class movement for democracy in Britain, Chartism remains a controversial episode for historians trying to understand and explain it. Was it a movement with revolutionary aims and violent strategies and tactics? How socially inclusive were the Chartists? Was the movement little more than irrational hunger politics, whipped up by unprincipled upper-class demagogues? In what ways did Chartism fail, and why? This essay begins by providing an overview of the movement, including definitions and the key debates among historians, before moving on to focus on the cultural dimensions of Chartism by looking at what it meant to be a Chartist. It will also explore the movement within the context of nineteenth century Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and the wider world – the far-flung corners of which many Chartists found themselves banished as transported prisoners and immigrants. The essay concludes by examining some of the ways in which Chartism failed, and the reasons for this, as well as pointing to some of the successes achieved by the movement

Memory, heritage, and the post steel city: Mediating the transformation of Sheffield since 1990

This chapter examines the transformation of Sheffield following the decline of its steel industry, focusing on the mediation of this transition by political, cultural, and industrial stakeholders. Since the 1980s, efforts to redefine Sheffield’s identity have oscillated between embracing its industrial heritage and rebranding it as a post-industrial, creative, and economically diverse city. Through three key case studies – the regeneration of the Lower Don Valley, the Sheffield One urban planning initiative, and the recent Heart of the City 2 project – the chapter explores how urban development, media representations, and public relations strategies have sought to reconcile Sheffield’s steelmaking past with a new civic identity. It highlights the tensions between economic redevelopment, historical memory, and the mythmaking processes that shape contemporary perceptions of the city. By analysing archival sources and promotional materials, the study reveals how Sheffield’s past has been alternately erased, revised, and celebrated to serve different agendas, ultimately contributing to an ongoing and contested negotiation of its post-steel identity

Contingency Strategies to Foster Resilience in National Parks During Crisis Events such as COVID-19

National Parks serve as sites of ecological conservation and a refuge for physical and mental well-being during times of crisis. However, COVID-19 caused several difficulties for national park managers, making it difficult for them to stay accessible. This study investigates the challenges that National Parks encounter during a crisis event such as COVID-19 and how to develop relevant contingency strategies for future disruptive events. Semi-structured interviews based on the resilience model of [Norris et al. (2008, Community resilience as a metaphor, theory, set of capacities, and strategy for disaster readiness. American Journal of Community Psychology, 41(1–2), 127–150)] were conducted with park managers at The Kruger National Park, South Africa, and the Peak District National Park, United Kingdom. Several stressors were identified regarding challenges faced in the parks due to the pandemic, such as uncertainty among staff and visitors and additional strain on resources such as time, funding, and available staff. This study underlines the importance of contingency planning in bolstering National Park resilience during global crises, offering practical insights for park management
