The Use of ‘Cool Japan’ in Inbound Tourism

    No full text
The use of the Cool Japan concept to revitalise inbound tourism has been promoted by the Japanese national and local governments as an element of regional revitalisation. While the effectiveness of the Cool Japan strategy has been recognised, there are several challenges. One is that the definition of Cool Japan itself is unclear. As the concept of ‘cool’ is subjective, there is a possibility that some things will be promoted as Cool Japan even if they are not fully expected to have a positive impact on the tourism industry and the economy in general. In addition, the economic effects of anime and manga, which are considered representative examples of Cool Japan, are dependent on personal interests and consumption activities. This paper analyses the risks and issues of using Cool Japan for inbound tourism promotion from a critical perspective, using the COOL JAPAN FOREST Project in Tokorozawa city, Saitama prefecture, as a case study. This paper draws comparisons with the strategy of Kyoto International Manga Museum, which has a similar ideological background to COOL JAPAN FOREST Project, to clarify the importance of integrating Cool Japan with local tourism assets as a part of broader tourism area design.

Emergent cross-product-type spin-orbit coupling under ferroaxial ordering

    No full text
A ferroic alignment of a time-reversal-even axial vector, which is called the ferroaxial ordered state, is identified by the spontaneous rotational distortion of the lattice structure to break vertical mirror symmetry. We theoretically investigate what happens in the electronic structure once ferroaxial ordering occurs by analyzing a tetragonal d-p cluster model with transition metal oxide in mind. By adopting the symmetry-adapted multipole representation, we elucidate the emergent cross-product form of the spin-orbit coupling by the interplay between the atomic spin-orbit coupling and the d-p hybridization according to vertical mirror symmetry breaking, which corresponds to the electronic order parameter of ferroaxial ordering

Transposition of the heat-activated retrotransposon ONSEN results in enhanced hypocotyl elongation

    No full text
We aimed to identify new mutants resulting from ONSEN transposition in Arabidopsis thaliana by subjecting nrpd1 mutant seedlings to heat stress. We isolated a mutant with a significantly elongated hypocotyl, named Long hypocotyl in ONSEN-inserted line 1 (hyo1). This phenotype was heritable, with progeny consistently displaying longer hypocotyls than the wild type. Genetic analysis revealed that this trait was due to a single recessive mutation. Further mapping and sequencing identified the insertion of ONSEN into the HY2 gene, a crucial regulator of hypocotyl elongation. The insertion disrupted HY2 transcription, as confirmed by quantitative PCR, leading to the observed phenotype. To assess any influence of the nrpd1 background, we generated lines backcrossed twice to wild-type Col-0, and the results were consistent with those observed in the original mutant lines. Furthermore, we examined the effect of HY2 and HYO1 mutations on flowering time by analyzing the expression levels of FT. The hyo1 mutant exhibited earlier flowering compared to both wild type and the nrpd1 mutant, with increased FT expression levels. This research highlights the impact of ONSEN transposition on gene function and phenotypic variation in A. thaliana, providing new insights into the mutagenic potential of transposons and their role in shaping plant traits

The third phase of site formation processes (iseki-ka) : A fragment report from the "Fieldwork Record " at the Rebunge Site

What is iseki-ka? First, I review the differences and similarities between the theory of site formation processes proposed by M. Schiffer and iseki-ka. Iseki-ka can be seen as going through three phases over time. It progresses first in structures, structural remains, and land as living space, rather than in artifacts and tools. Contrary to Schiffer's thinking, I place "scavenge" and "pot hunting" as the second phase of site formation processes (iseki-ka / site-fication). I argue that The third phase of iseki-ka is the "archaeological excavation" that determines our understanding of the site today. I also point out the importance of" preserve while maintaining" as the third new phase or fourth stage of iseki-ka(site-fication). Based on this theoretical analysis, I present as a specific example how a problem was dealt with as the third phase of iseki-ka, that arose during the indoor sorting work and report preparation(currently underway) of the third excavation survey at the Rebunge Site (Toyoura Town, Abuta County, Hokkaido)
