Building a conceptual spatial framework: using spatial agency to enhance the transformative aspects of TD research

No full text
Transdisciplinary (TD) research is a relational and transformative practice. Furthermore, it is a spatial practice. In fact, the concept of space plays an important role in TD research in that spatial concepts are used to describe the conditions, processes and outcomes of TD research. What is missing, however, is a perspective on space itself as a relational and becoming phenomenon and how such an understanding of space corresponds to the relationality of TD research as well as to its transformative capacity. This is the focus here. From a narrative review of spatial concepts commonly deployed with TD research, this article identifies three dimensions of space, which describe three distinct spatial ideals occurring within TD research. Differentiating the dimensions from theories of spatial agency, each one is then detailed based on what a mutual relationship between space and actors looks like. The three dimensions constitute a typology that is developed into a conceptual framework for space in TD research. The findings include, first the three dimensions, described as symbolic, functional and relational spaces, which together form a typology. This typology categorizes the many and interchangeably used spatial concepts within TD research and serves both an analytical and designerly purpose, identifying the productive relationship of space and actors in a TD process. Second, transformative spatial capacities are identified within the dimensions: enabling collaboration, enhancing collective ability and dealing with difference. Third, crucial spatial qualities that afford transformation are highlighted for each dimension, as sustaining contingency, being dynamic, and allowing for paradoxes. In summary, the conceptual framework allows us to understand spatial capacities and qualities that enhance the transformative aspects of TD research.Funding Agencies|University of Gothenburg; Svenska Forskningsradet Formas [2021-00103]</p

Att närma sig naturvetenskap : De yngsta barnens utforskande i förskolan

No full text
This dissertation explores how very young children (1–3 years old) in Swedish preschools encounter and engage with science through everyday play and interactions. The study aims to generate knowledge about how emergent science learning takes shape in early childhood education and how children’s actions, individually and together with peers and preschool teachers, can be understood as scientific meaning-making. The theoretical framework is grounded in symbolic interactionism, highlighting how meaning emerges through social interaction and the use of social objects. Methodologically, the study draws on a constructivist grounded theory approach, based on ethnographic fieldwork including video observations, field notes, and informal conversations in several preschool settings. The analysis identifies recurring patterns in children’s meaning-making: exploring independently (en-skapar), co-creating with peers (kamrat-skapar), and jointly creating with teachers (barn-pedagog-skapar). Central strategies in these processes are repetition, variation, and synthesis, which support children’s bodily, cognitive, and conceptual engagement with scientific phenomena such as gravity, friction, and magnetism. The study also shows that teachers play a crucial role: when they respond to and extend children’s initiatives, spontaneous and meaningful science learning opportunities arise, whereas children’s explorations risk being overlooked when teachers are absent or inattentive. The findings contribute to the growing field of research on emergent science by providing insights into how very young children’s everyday actions can be seen as foundational scientific practices. Pedagogical implications include the need for attentive and responsive teaching, access to rich environments and materials, and the use of scientific language to gradually deepen children’s conceptual understanding. The study underscores preschool as a key arena for fostering curiosity, wonder, and long-term interest in science, not by transmitting facts but by creating conditions for children’s own explorations in dialogue with peers, materials, and educators.

Trans Humor, And Resistance: De/Coloniality Of French Humor, And Comedy

No full text
Humor has been one of my many tools for me to cope with misgendering, transphobia, anxiety, etc. Sadly, humor and comedy theories in French-speaking contexts have not considered enough the power dynamics that humor can contribute to normalizing, nor ways to deconstruct them. In this thesis, I argue that adding the concept of de/coloniality to the Benign Violation Theory popularized by Warren and McGraw (2010), meaning creating laughter through what will be considered “benign” violations of norms by the audience – namely, by focusing on Decolonial Violations – is a useful way to theorize this gap in relation to brave spaces, meaning spaces where the audience is challenged. This idea can educate outgroups and support ingroups simultaneously and open the Overton window (meaning what is considered acceptable in the mainstream) when used alongside decolonial thought: there is a potential to challenge coloniality and audiences through humor. Through semi-structured interviews, I interviewed 5 French-speaking trans artists (2 non-white artists) and 4 non-performing trans audience (2 non-white audience) from Quebec, France, Belgium, to assess their politicization on the subject, and their view on the potential decolonial, educational, and care aspects of humor in relation to their trans identity. All were very politicized, although most of the non-performer group did not consider themselves “militant” (militant/activist). The notion of how to use humor was very nuanced, some more universalist, and some ready to make no compromises on their art. However, generally, white participants struggled with the larger notion of decoloniality, only seeing it from an individual prism rather than on a collective prism, and how white supremacy and coloniality impacted/could impact them as well, although de/coloniality has impacted/impacts trans non-white folks more. The notion of brave spaces, hence spaces where one’s values/thoughts are challenged, is what seemed to be lacking the most in the French humor sphere, and algorithms and capitalism seem to worsen it

Waiting time in diagnosis and extirpative surgery and association with survival and stage progression in upper tract urothelial carcinomas

No full text
Objectives: To investigate the association between waiting time and outcomes in patients with upper tract urothelial carcinomas (UTUC). Patients and methods: We studied a population-based cohort of 858 patients in BladderBaSe 2.0 subjected to extirpative surgery for UTUC 2015-2019 in Sweden. Diagnostic waiting time (from referral to diagnosis, reference <1 week), treatment waiting time (from diagnosis to surgery, reference <5 weeks) and total waiting time (reference <10 weeks) were investigated in relation to disease-specific (DSS) and overall survival (OS) by multivariable Cox regression models. To further explore these associations, stage progression from preoperatively recorded clinical tumour stage to pathological tumour stage in the extirpated specimen was assessed by logistic regression. Results: Total waiting time was not associated with DSS, OS or stage progression. A diagnostic waiting time between 1 and 4 weeks was associated with better DSS (HR 0.57 [95% CI 0.35-0.94]) and OS (HR 0.60 [95% CI 0.41-0.87]). In the strata of patients with UTUC in the renal pelvis, a diagnostic waiting time > 4 weeks was associated with stage progression (OR 2.44 [95% CI 1.00-5.95]), and in patients with UTUC in the ureter, a treatment waiting time between 5 and 10 weeks was associated to worse DSS (HR 2.85 (95% CI 1.03-7.89). Conclusions: In general, shorter care pathways were linked to beneficial survival estimates, yet some estimates may be influenced by selection bias due to prioritizing short waiting times for patients with advanced and/or overt symptomatic tumours. Stage progression with increased waiting time may indicate an underlying causal mechanism.Funding Agencies|Foundation of Urological Research (Ove and Carin Carlsson bladder cancer donation)</p

Lifetime follow-up of an adult patient with pediatric-onset hypophosphatasia complicated with advanced chronic kidney disease

No full text
Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare inborn-error-of-metabolism caused by mutations in the ALPL gene, resulting in deficient activity of tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase and impaired skeletal mineralization. Affected individuals have a higher prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) than the general population. We report a woman who underwent craniosynostosis surgery in infancy and lost her deciduous teeth prematurely. From age 27, she experienced recurrent foot pain due to multiple metatarsal fractures. Low levels of total alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was noted at 39 years of age, and low activities for the three bone-specific ALP (BALP) isoforms B/ I, B1 and B2. Genetic analysis revealed 2 missense variants in the ALPL gene (p.Glu191Lys and p.Gly456Arg) confirming HPP. At age 44, she developed bilateral hip fissures requiring right-sided total hip replacement. Treatment with the parathyroid hormone analogue teriparatide (20 mu g/day) was initiated at age 50, leading to increased BALP isoform levels indicating improved mineralization, less bone pain, and no new fractures during 9 months of treatment, which was stopped due to hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. She began peritoneal dialysis at age 55 and received a kidney transplant at age 58. At age 65, seven years post-transplantation, she remained free of new fractures and significant bone pain. This case illustrates the long-term natural history of HPP with progressive skeletal complications across decades, and highlights the potential of short-term teriparatide as a therapeutic option for symptom relief and improved mineralization. It also suggests that kidney transplantation may contribute to improved bone health in HPP with advanced CKD.Funding Agencies|Linkoping University Library; Swedish Research Council; ALF grants from Region Ostergotland</p

Reduced need for inpatient care following introduction of long-acting injectable buprenorphine

No full text
Background Growing evidence supports long-acting injectable (LAI) buprenorphine in opioid use disorder treatment. Implementation is limited due to concerns about costs as well as potential reduction of support, which could increase strain on health care services. This real-life study follows clinical patients one year prospectively and one year retrospectively from switching from daily sublingual or peroral opioid agonist treatment (OAT ) to LAI buprenorphine exploring how this impacts days of inpatient care and emergency room (ER) visits. Methods From electronic medical records, from four Swedish OAT clinics, we identified all patients (n=128) who had switched from sublingual or peroral OAT, to LAI buprenorphine during the first two years of implementation (2019-2021 in three clinics, 2021–2023 in the fourth). In this within-subject mirror study, patients served as their own controls. The number of days of inpatient care and ER visits were extracted from the electronic medical records using a standard operating procedure. Quasi-Poisson models were used to compare health care utilization before and after starting LAI buprenorphine. Results Among the 128 patients, 28 (22%) were female and mean age was 37.8 (SD 9.0) years. Days of inpatient care were reduced by half, dropping from an average of 9.0 to 4.5 days (incidence rate ratio [IRR]: 0.5, 95% CI 0.41–0.61, p<.001), with a health care cost reduction of SEK 45,081 (~USD 4,090) per patient. The decline in days of inpatient care was even steeper among the 85 patients who remained on LAI buprenorphine treatment at 12 months (IRR 0.26, 95% CI 0.20–0.34, p<.001), with a decrease in health care costs of SEK 73,210 (~USD 6,642) per patient. ER visits showed no significant change (IRR: 0.93, 95%CI 0.79 - 1.09). One-year treatment retention to LAI buprenorphine was high (67%). Most patients who discontinued LAI buprenorphine transitioned to other sublingual/peroral forms of OAT, resulting in an overall OAT continuation rate of 89%. Conclusions Implementation of LAI buprenorphine in OAT clinical settings was a ssociated with a significant reduction in inpatient care and substantially reduced health care costs. These results challenge common economic hesitations and support wider integration of LAI options in opioid use disorder treatment.Funding Agencies|Linkoping University; Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare, Forte [2022-00228]; Research Council of Southeast Sweden, FORSS [931904, 940502, 969130, 982042]</p

On p-compatible topologies and their special cases

No full text
Topologies tau, a on a set X are called it-compatible ([4]) if tau is a it--network for a, and vice versa. If topologies tau, a on a set X are it--compatible, then the families of nowhere dense sets (resp. meager sets or sets possessing the Baire property) of the spaces ( (X, tau tau) and ( (X, a a) coincide. A topology a on a set X Xis called an admissible extension ([5]) of a topology tau on X if tau subset of a and tau is a it--network for a. It turns out that examples of admissible extensions were occurred in literature several times. In the paper we provide some new facts about the it--compatibility and the admissible extension as well as about their particular cases. (c) 2025 The Author. Published by Elsevier B.V. Postoperative speech impairment and cranial nerve deficits in children undergoing posterior fossa tumor surgery with intraoperative MRI - a prospective multinational study

No full text
Background Postoperative speech impairment (POSI) and cranial nerve deficits (CND) are common complications of pediatric posterior fossa (PF) tumor surgery. Intraoperative MRI (ioMRI) has proven a useful tool in achieving gross total resection. The risk of POSI and CND with ioMRI remains unclear, making it the primary scope of this study. Additionally, we assessed whether POSI was associated with CND. Methods We prospectively included pediatric patients undergoing PF tumor surgery in 36 centers across 15 European countries. Neurological status and speech were assessed preoperatively and 1-4 weeks postoperatively. Surgical details, including tumor location and use of ioMRI, were recorded within 72 h of surgery. Postoperative CND were categorized as 0, 1, 2, or >= 3 nerves affected; POSI as habitual, reduced speech, or mutism. Proportional odds models estimated odds ratios (OR) for 1) POSI with stepwise adjustment for tumor location and age, and 2) CND with adjustment for preoperative CND and tumor location. Subgroup analyses assessed systematic differences, missing data, center-level effects, and histology adjustment. ResultsOf 790 primary PF tumor surgeries, 141 (18%) involved ioMRI. POSI occurred in 183/790 (23%) and postoperative CND in 213/790 (27%). POSI-risk with ioMRI showed non-significant unadjusted OR (95% CI) 0.83 (0.53;1.30); adjusted OR 0.76 (0.43;1.35). Fewer CNDs were observed with ioMRI (unadjusted OR 0.63 (0.40;1.00), adjusted OR 0.58 (0.33;0.94), p = 0.03). POSI-risk was associated with more CNDs (adjusted OR for 1 CND: 2.06 (1.15;3.68); 2 CND: 2.13 (1.02;4.42); >= 3 CND: 4.15 (1.98;8.70), p < 0.05). Conclusions ioMRI was not associated with increased risk of postoperative complications in this multicenter cohort. The reduction in CND among ioMRI cases may reflect derived effects on surgical decision-making, expertise, case-load and case-mix. Results should be interpreted with caution due to limited intraoperative data. The association between POSI-risk and cumulative CND may indicate extensive brainstem involvement. Our findings highlight the need to further explore how ioMRI-guided strategies affect functional outcomes in pediatric PF tumour surgery.Funding Agencies|Brnecancerfonden</p

Cultural heritage role in planning practice : a study on how cultural and industrial heritage are managed in the transformation of Inre hamnen, Norrköping.

No full text
The city of Norrköping is going through a transformation. A transformation that sees older parts of the city be repurposed from industrial sites into new and modern living spaces. This might seem like a straightforward procedure but in an economically driven market focused around sustainability, where do cultural heritage fit in? In this article, the relation between sustainable planning and cultural heritage is studied in the new district “Inre hamnen” in Norrköping. Other studies from two different cities in Sweden are also taken into account to analyze the results from municipal plans and a few comments from the city and private firms. The discussion feeds from all involved documents to show a potential outcome and value of cultural heritage in “Inre hamnen” in Norrköping.
