To Secure a Flow : From Specification to Enforcement of Information Flow Control
The use of software has become increasingly prevalent, affecting nearly every aspect of our daily lives. In this landscape, ensuring the security of software systems is more critical than ever, as vulnerabilities can lead to significant social and financial consequences. Information flow control is a research area focused on developing methods and techniques to provide strong security guarantees against software attacks and vulnerabilities. Information flow control achieves this by tracking how information flows within a program, ensuring that sensitive data does not reach unauthorized outputs. This process can be challenging as it requires precisely defining the software system's security policy and developing mechanisms to enforce that policy against different types of attackers with varying capabilities. In this thesis, we examine language-based approaches to enforcing information flow control in software systems, with a focus on defining appropriate security policies, attacker models, and enforcement mechanisms to proactively secure modern software systems. The thesis contributes to the state of the art of information flow security in several directions, both theoretical and practical, by investigating four key research questions: defining non-trivial security policies for real-world scenarios, developing appropriate attacker models, creating mechanisms to enforce information flow security conditions, and applying language-based techniques to real-world programming languages. On the policy specification side, we provide a knowledge-based security framework capable of expressing many variants of dynamic policies as well as the Determinacy Quantale, a new semantic model for expressing disjunctive policies in database-backed programs, focusing on the conflict-of-interest classes. We examine the role of attackers in defining security conditions, specifically two types of active attackers and three types of passive attackers with various degrees of capabilities. Moreover, we investigate enforcement mechanisms, such as security type systems and symbolic execution, developed to statically enforce various information flow security policies. Finally, to demonstrate the applicability of language-based approaches in real-world programs, we implement and evaluate the proposed enforcement mechanisms in the programming languages Java and P4.Användningen av mjukvara har blivit alltmer utbredd och påverkar i stort sett alla aspekter av våra dagliga liv.
Equivalent Circuit Parameter Measurement of Multiphase Induction Machine by Exploitation of Space Harmonic Relations
A multiphase induction machine model using vector space decomposition provides insights into many space harmonics through decoupled reference frames. In order to utilize this potential of the multiphase machine, the parameters of each vector space must be identified. These parameters are usually identified using standard no-load and locked rotor tests of each torque-producing vector space. However, these tests do not provide a method for identifying stator leakage inductances, which have comparable magnitudes to the magnetizing inductances for higher-order vector spaces. Thus, the magnetizing current cannot be neglected during the locked-rotor test. This paper proposes an accurate method for identifying the T-model parameters of a multiphase induction machine, which can be conveniently translated into the model of choice. The proposed method use harmonic relations to segregate the stator leakage inductance from the total stator inductance, enabling accurate locked-rotor and partial-load tests for the measurement of rotor side parameters. Lastly, a 9-phase induction machine is used for the evaluation of the proposed parameter measurement method. These measured parameters are used for the field-oriented control of each torque-producing vector space, whose performances are analyzed by quantifying the measured output torque error and linearity.QC 20250227</p
Ultrasound assisted drug delivery using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) shelled microbubbles and perfluorocarbon PFC droplets shows potential in theranostics, particularly with ultrasound induced pumping out behavior and acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV). This thesis aims to investigate the pumping out behavior and ADV by developing an ultrasound sequence using the Verasonics Research System in Matlab. This was used for collecting images during experiments with PVA microbubbles and PFC droplets. The collected image’s mean pixel intensity (MPI) was investigated against time. Results confirmed the presence of the pumping out behavior in PVA microbubbles, characterized by a gradually rising and declining signal due to gas release through shell deformation under acoustic pressure. This could be confirmed using ultrafast ultrasound of both simple plane wave imaging and plane wave compounding. A comparison of the pumping out behavior was performed using data collected at different burst pulse repetition frequencies (PRF), frames per second (FPS), and the presence or absence of ultrasound compounding. The results indicated that the pumping out behavior is energy dependent and that it is possible to induce under the influence of a variety of PRFs. Using the same sequence, the ADV of PFC droplets was validated, showing rapid phase transitions to gas confirmed by a rapidly increased signal due to scattering. It was also observed that ADV can take the form of local gas clusters. In conclusion, this method was shown to be successful, but not at an optimal repeatability. Further improvements would thereby be necessary for a robust and more reproducible outcome.
Prediction of Average Wind Pressure Coefficient on Building Surfaces by Artificial Neural Network : Development of a Calculation Method and an Application to the Valbo Church in Sweden
Natural ventilation efficiency is a sustainable solution for improving indoor environment quality, especially in older structures like churches. Traditional computational tools for evaluating natural ventilation potential are often time-consuming, labor-intensive, and resource-demanding. This thesis, titled "Prediction of Average Wind Pressure Coefficient on Building Surfaces by Artificial Neural Network," presents an efficient, fast, and accurate tool for predicting the average wind pressure coefficient with consideration of terrain complexity and variety of building dimensions, a critical parameter for assessing natural ventilation potential in buildings. In this research, Valbo church, which is located in Gästrikland, Sweden, is chosen as the baseline and in order to create a data base containing different development for this kind of church, we tried to build 378 cases based on diminishing and enlarging the size of the Valbo church. The proposed tool leverages a multilayer perceptron (MLP) network, trained using PyTorch with Optuna for hyperparameter optimization and k-fold cross-validation to ensure robustness and generalization. An additional test group was employed to validate the model's reliability and accuracy, achieving promising results. By using this tool, the prediction result on Valbo church is quite satisfied, the worst result is more than 0.98 in correlation parameter (R). In other cases where the dimension values can be found among the ones in the database, the worst result is still more than 0.97 in R. This study not only demonstrates the effectiveness of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in predicting average wind pressure coefficients but also highlights their broader potential in building technology applications. With further research, ANN-based tools could extend their capabilities to predict detailed wind pressure coefficients distribution and flow patterns, offering significant advancements in the evaluation and design of natural ventilation systems.
Dynamics of demand in passenger services on railways
The dynamic effects are a long-term process concerning equilibrium between demand and supply that is usually not achieved in a few years, but after a significantly longer period that can be counted in decades. The consequences of the dynamics may be that society makes incorrect or undersized investments in the railway network based on non-dynamic models. This report examines what research has been conducted on when and to what extent dynamic development occurs in rail passenger demand, and whether any research has been conducted on modelling this dynamic development. Results showed that hard measures such as for example frequency of service, travel time and number of necessary interchanges have been studied to a large extent and it is well understood how such measures affect demand, especially in urban transport. However, literature has found that softer measures, which take longer time to have an effect on demand, could be responsible for some of the dynamic development and forecast inaccuracies found in the literature. Also, external factors that are often considered less or even excluded from models, were found to sometimes affect demand significantly. Another aspect is the rail factor, i.e. some mode specific attraction assigned to guided transport. The effect of the rail factor has been studied with very mixed results. It would however only be relevant to include the rail factor if there has been a change in modes or if there is competition between rail and road-bound modes such as a bus service. It has been clear during this work that not that much literature exists on this topic. The main conclusion of this report would therefore be that more work could be done to examine how dynamic effects affect passenger demand. This is especially true for the very long timespans of a couple of decades or more.QC 20250304</p
Offshore wind farms are emerging as a key alternative to fossil fuels and are gradually finding their place in the European and global energy mix. In the current context of energy transition, offshore wind turbine technology has developed at a rapid pace, with continuous technical advancement, giving way to more efficient turbines and more substantial large-scale projects. Accurately estimating the yield at each stage of development is crucial to developing the most efficient offshore wind farms possible. Estimation of yield in the early design phases depends on multiple factors, including the wind shear at the site, wind speed distribution probabilities, wake effects, and other loss-inducing influences. This Master’s thesis studies and compares different methods for calculating annual energy production to determine the most accurate and reliable approach for wind farm yield estimation. Two empirical laws for establishing the wind profile and calculating the wind speed at the hub height are analysed: the logarithmic law and the power law. Of these two methods, the logarithmic law has been found to be the most accurate and exhibits the least bias. The Weibull and Rayleigh probability distribution functions are compared to establish the wind speed distribution. The Weibull function provides more accurate results than the Rayleigh function. Further improvement can be achieved by fitting and optimising this function to in situ data. For wake effect modelling, three models from the PyWake Python package are assessed: NOJ, Bastankhah Gaussian and TurboPark models. Comparison with real data from two offshore wind farms demonstrates that the Bastankhah Gaussian model yields the most accurate results. This study provides a comparative analysis of wind resource assessment methods, contributing to more precise early-stage yield estimations for offshore wind farms.

This study investigates how the complexity of conversational content in speech interfaces affects cognitive load and driving performance in professional truck drivers. Using a driving simulator and the NASA Task Load Index (NASATLX), we measured the impact of four levels of conversational complexity on driving metrics and subjective workload among 10 drivers aged 20-25. Results show that increasing conversational complexity significantly degrades driving performance and elevates cognitive load, with strong correlations between subjective workload and objective performance measures. Most critically, collision frequency increased by 130% from control to high complexity conditions, representing the most dramatic safety impact observed. The economic analysis reveals that reducing driver cognitive load could generate approximately 210,364 SEK in annual value per driver, with safety improvements accounting for the largest share (80.5%). These findings provide a compelling business case for investing in cognitive load reduction solutions and contribute to understanding the economic implications of human factors in transportation. This research has particular relevance for Scania and similar stakeholders in the Swedish transportation sector, where road safety and operational efficiency remain critical challenges
End-of-Life PV Panel Recycling Using Molten Zinc Chloride Pyrolysis Approach
The growing adoption of photovoltaic (PV) technology has created an urgent demand for disposalling end-of-life (EoL) PV panels in a sustainable way. This study explores the use of molten salt pyrolysis, particularly molten zinc chloride (ZnCl2), as a novel and efficient approach for recycling PV panels. A custom-designed pyrolysis reactor equipped with an integrated electric heater was employed to investigate the decomposition behavior of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and backsheet polymers at temperature ranges of 400 - 450 ℃. The findings demonstrate that molten ZnCl2 outperforms molten nitrates and traditional pyrolysis process in inert gas environments, enabling rapid decomposition and clean separation of glass and silicon within significantly reduced timeframes. Zinc chloride is a promising candidate for industrial-scale recycling because of its potential catalytic properties, which can enhance depolymerization reactions, improve energy efficiency and significantly reduce the reaction temperature required for pyrolysis. Future applications of molten salt pyrolysis may be extended from the recycling of photovoltaic panels to other polymer-intensive waste streams. In addition, combining the process with pretreatment technologies and renewable energy sources could optimize potentially reduce operating costs and further improve the sustainability. Furthermore, future research should address emissions management issues and assess the long-term durability and scalability of molten salt systems to advance industrial implementation.
Open Innovation offers firms opportunities to enhance their innovation capabilities by collaborating with external partners. However, such openness also introduces risks, particularly related to knowledge protection and the potential for misappropriation of knowledge. This thesis explores how large firms manage knowledge outflows in Open Innovation by applying formal and informal appropriability mechanisms. The study is based on a qualitative single case study of a global firm that provides commercial, industrial, and residential products and solutions, with a strong emphasis on research, development, and innovation. Empirical data were collected through semi-structured interviews with employees involved in Open Innovation collaborations. The findings show that the firm strategically applies a combination of formal appropriability mechanisms, such as patents, a range of legal agreements and informal appropriability mechanisms, including secrecy, trade secrets, partial disclosure as a strategic form of secrecy and complexity. In addition, the study identifies “knowledge scrubbing” as an internal practice used to identify and manage sensitive knowledge prior to external engagement. This practice emerges as a new contribution to the spectrum of informal appropriability mechanisms, helping to reduce the risk of unintended knowledge spillovers and misappropriation in collaborative settings. The results provide deeper insight into how firms manage and protect strategically important knowledge while engaging in Open Innovation.Öppen Innovation erbjuder företag möjligheter att stärka sin innovationsförmåga genom samarbete med externa parter.
