Practical Machine Learning for Predictions in Mobile Networks

    No full text
The use of machine learning (ML) in mobile networks has surged to tackle the challenges arising from their growing complexity, dynamic behavior, and application demands. However, more support through prediction models for key performance metrics that cannot be directly observed at the base station are needed to better adapt network and application parameters to the changing network state. Moreover, the growing adoption of ML models in telecom networks brings practical challenges, like the scarcity of labeled data for training, heterogeneity of hardware, and evolving conditions, all of which pose hurdles to their seamless deployment in real-world scenarios. In this thesis we investigate ML-driven methods to predict user performance in dynamic environments and address the practical challenges encountered over a model’s life cycle. First, we present supervised ML approaches for predicting key metrics such as round-trip time and one-way delay, using data collected from 5G mmWave testbed networks.Further, we propose a mobile edge-assisted framework for improving quality of service (QoS) and reducing backhaul load for video streaming applications, by prefetching video segments, under backhaul bandwidth and cache storage restrictions. This framework is based on ML predictions of video segment bitrates in a dynamically changing mobile network.  Next, we address domain shifts, particularly from the arrival of new user equipment (UE) types, by applying adversarial adaptation strategies that allow models to adapt without requiring labeled samples from the new domain.Further, we apply self-supervised learning approaches to harness unlabeled data from telecom network datasets. This is shown to improve model accuracy in label-scarce scenarios. Finally, to further mitigate data-collection challenges, we introduce an open-source simulation framework for generating large-scale, customizable datasets. Overall, this thesis contributes to the careful design of ML solutions for predicting key performance metrics, and shows how they can, along with robust data generation, model adaptation, and model pretraining techniques, elevate user experience and network automation in modern telecom networks.

Brittle Fracture in Heterogeneous Materials — Theory, Experiments, and Numerical Modelling

    No full text
Brittle fracture in the ductile-to-brittle transition regime raises complex issues for structural integrity assessments, particularly when fracture toughness is influenced by heterogeneity. This thesis investigates brittle failure through theoretical, numerical, experimental, and probabilistic approaches, focusing on understanding and modelling fracture behaviour in multipass welds. A probabilistic framework is developed to evaluate how spatial heterogeneity affects failure probability curves obtained from fracture toughness testing. The distinction between small-scale and large-scale heterogeneity is formalised based on the relative size of the heterogeneity compared to the fracture process zone. Numerical simulations show how heterogeneity shapes failure probability curves, and scaling methods are introduced to relate results from miniature specimens to full-scale conditions. Experimental work includes fracture toughness testing and fractography of agedand unaged weld metals. Thermal ageing introduces heterogeneity in toughness through zone-specific embrittlement caused by phosphorus segregation. The role of grain orientation in brittle failure is investigated, and limitations of standard testing methods under heterogeneous conditions are addressed. The developed methods form a foundation for fracture assessment instructurally heterogeneous materials and support more reliable interpretation of fracture toughness data in safety-critical applications.

Situation Awareness for Autonomous Agents under Limited Sensing

    No full text
Autonomous agents, such as robots and automated vehicles, rely on their ability to perceive and interpret their environment to make informed decisions and execute actions that align with their goals. A key aspect of this capability is situation awareness, which involves understanding the current state of the environment and predicting its future evolution. Traditional autonomous systems address perception and prediction as separate tasks within a sequential pipeline, where raw sensor data is processed into increasingly abstract representations. While this structured approach has driven significant advancements, it remains constrained by sensor limitations, including occlusions, measurement uncertainty, and adverse weather conditions. This thesis investigates how predictions from past observations can enhance perception algorithms, enabling agents to infer missing information, reduce uncertainty, and better anticipate changes. To support this integration, alternative environment representations are explored that allow feedback between prediction and perception while capturing uncertainty. This tighter coupling improves decision-making, particularly in complex and partially observable environments. The contributions include: (1) a reachability-based reasoning framework for tracking possible hidden obstacles; (2) its extension to handle delayed and partial external data; (3) a probabilistic mapping method, Transitional Grid Maps (TGM), that jointly models static and dynamic occupancy; and (4) an extension of TGM to mitigate weather-induced sensor noise. The proposed methods are evaluated in simulated and real scenarios where traditional perception pipelines struggle, such as occluded, highly dynamic and noisy environments. By bridging the gap between perception and prediction, this work contributes to the development of more robust and intelligent autonomous systems.

    No full text
This thesis examines how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be utilized to facilitate workflows in commerce through automating categorization and price prediction. The goal is to simplify the process of structuring input data and generating predicted outcomes based on extracted features. The final product is a prototype that utilize two AI methods to classify text and perform price prediction. It allows free text input of new article data, where the article features are extracted by a fine-tuned Large Language Model (LLM), and forwarded to a price predicting model that suggest a price for the article, based on those features. The LLM is trained on structured and categorized data, to extract article features from free text through Named Entity Recognition (NER), such as brands, article types and colors, with the purpose of categorize and thereby structuring data. The model is trained on both a small and a large dataset. The results show that even though both models perform with an accuracy above 90%, the model trained on the larger dataset is the best performing one, with a 96% accuracy, and an F1 score of 0.95. The second AI method is classical Machine Learning (ML) that performs price predictions based on the structured data. Different ML algorithms are compared, both regression and classification. The results of price predictions show that the preferred algorithm is Decision Tree Classification. It is the least demanding algorithm and it performs better than both the regression model and the more complex classification models. The accuracy of all models are below 70%, the accuracy of the Decision Tree model being 67%. The low accuracy of price predictions is a result of a large number of classes and inconsistencies in pricing, causing confusion during model training.

On the discrepancy between the task and communication graphs in multi-agent control systems

    No full text
Motivated by applications in which agents need to perform collaborative tasks under limited communication, in this work we consider the asymptotic satisfaction of relative-position based spatial tasks by a leader-follower network. As opposed to existing approaches, the spatial tasks may involve non-communicating agents and/or a subset of the multi-agent team. In order to ensure the satisfaction of the constraints using local information, as a first contribution, we express the incidence matrix of the task graph in terms of the corresponding matrix of the communication graph. In addition, for undirected spanning tree communication graphs, we show that the relation of the incidence matrices of these graphs is unique. Building upon this relation, as a second contribution we propose a two-hop communication based distributed feedback control law that ensures asymptotic satisfaction of the constraints  with a predetermined robustness. The proposed control law employs the line graph of the communication graph and does not require knowledge of a complete row of the constraint matrix.QC 20250602</p

Analysis of IoT-botnet and Optimiza-tion of Cowrie Honeypot

    No full text
With the increasing number of IoT devices and their lack of security, the risk of cyberattacks is rising. Therefore, it is of great importance to collect and analyze information about these attacks, as well as to effectively utilize tools such as honey-pots to gather relevant data. Honeypots such as Cowrie with standard configura-tion can be detected by attackers by examining its variables. In this project the SSH-client Termius was used to connect and interact with Cowrie. This to examine variables that can reveal Cowrie as Honeypot. A Python-script and password attack tool Hydra was used to simulate attacks on Cowrie with standard configuration and thereafter with modified configuration. This was done both in Cowrie in a virtual environment and on Raspberry Pi. Cowrie in a virtual environment was exposed to the Internet to gather information from real attacks. Cowrie with standard config-uration could easily be identified as a Honeypot. Modified configurations increased Cowrie’s credibility, the numbers of attacks and further interactions. Cowrie with modified configurations that was exposed on the Internet gathered information that could indicate potential use for further communication and attacks. Cowrie showed good logging capabilities, however session terminations and insufficient command support limited the potential for collecting more in-depth information

Simulation-Driven Optimization of an HPDI Argon-Hydrogen Engine

    No full text
This thesis presents a simulation-driven study on the optimization of a High-Pressure Direct Injection Argon-Hydrogen internal combustion engine operating in a closed-loop configuration. The objective is to explore the potential of hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel, combined with argon as a thermodynamically advantageous inert working fluid. A detailed 1D model is developed in GT-POWER, starting from a conventional six-cylinder diesel engine architecture and progressively modified to implement turbocharging, charge-air cooling, and turbo-matching strategies. The work begins with baseline simulations to assess convergence behavior and the inherent efficiency of the closed-loop base architecture. A fixed-geometry turbocharger is then introduced to recover exhaust energy, revealing the need for improved thermal management due to increased intake temperatures. A charge-air cooler is subsequently added, successfully restoring thermal stability and improving Brake Thermal Efficiency. Parametric studies on argon content, initial pressure, and air-fuel equivalence ratio (λ) demonstrate that argon dilution and system pressure are critical to achieving optimal efficiency. Finally, a compressor and turbine matching analysis is carried out by tuning mass and efficiency multipliers, resulting in a peak BTE of 57% and a reduction in Brake Specific Fuel Consumption by 2%. The final model confirms that turbo-matching is essential to unlock the full potential of a closed-loop hydrogen ICE. From an environmental standpoint, the proposed system eliminates carbon emissions, making it a promising solution for the future of sustainable heavy-duty transportation. Future work will involve extending this model with variable geometry and electric turbochargers and conducting real engine validation in test cells, as a means to implement it in commercial vehicles.

Assistive technology: Developing a tactile aid for individuals with congenital deafblindness : A study and design project in developing a form of communication using the tactile sense

    No full text
This thesis explores the development of a tactile communication aid for individuals with congenital deafblindness (CDB), a condition defined as the combined loss of both vision and hearing manifesting at birth or before language acquisition. Individuals with CDB rely primarily on their sense of touch to understand and interact with the world, often forming highly individualized communication systems that are difficult for outsiders to interpret. Traditional language systems — such as speech, sign, or Braille — require a prior linguistic understanding, rendering them inaccessible to people with CDB. Through theoretical research, interviews, and field studies in collaboration with Nationellt Kunskapscenter för Dövblindfrågor (NKCDB), this project identifies a critical gap in assistive communication tools: the absence of a tactile language designed from the ground up for users without prior linguistic knowledge, as well as an established process in creating intuitive haptic patterns. To address this, a vibrotactile pattern logic (VPL) was developed — using vibration parameters of rhythm, duration, intensity, frequency, and pauses to create patterns conveying meaning. This logic was embodied in the specific context of temporal communication — conveying the passage of time as a tactile vibration pattern. This context was further reinforced through a conceptual design proposal, which features a tactile surface composed of elevated surfaces or bars. The number of bars represents the amount of remaining time, and in combination with a vibration pattern indicating the conclusion of an activity, will help convey the user with information of how much time remains for a given activity. This design allows users to perceive the passage or remaining time through touch, offering a tactile solution for users and caregivers alike. The results indicate that a carefully designed vibrotactile system can serve as a foundation for symbolic understanding in individuals with CDB, offering new possibilities for communication and emotional connection. This thesis mainly contributes with the discovery and detailing of a critical research gap within haptic design, but also contributes both a theoretical groundwork, and a concrete design proposal for future research and development in tactile assistive technologies.
