    Degradation of 4-chlorophenol and NO x Using Ultrasonically Synthesized TiO2 Loaded Graphene Oxide Photocatalysts

    TiO2, GO–TiO2, Pt–GO–TiO2 were synthesized using an ultrasound-assisted technique. The synthesized photocatalysts were characterized using XRD, UV-Vis, FTIR and TEM-EDX instruments. The photocatalytic activities of these catalysts were compared using the degradation of 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) in aqueous solutions. Pt–GO–TiO2 showed higher rate of degradation of 4-CP than that of bare TiO2. Doping of TiO2 with Pt (0.4 wt%) exhibited total degradation of 4-CP in 1 h under light irradiation. A similar trend was observed with mineralization of 4-CP using different catalysts which was monitored by total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. Among different solution pH, pH 6 showed high efficiency for the degradation of 4-CP. A combined method of ultrasound and photocatalysis was also investigated for the effective degradation of 4-CP. High frequency (215 kHz) ultrasound exhibited higher degradation of 4-CP than low frequency (20 kHz) of ultrasound. There was no synergistic effect of photocatalysis combined with ultrasound method but an additive effect was observed. Gas phase degradation of NO x was also carried out using the above catalysts and the results revealed that GO–TiO2 was an excellent catalyst for the total decomposition of toxic NO x gas in a short period of time without using Pt. GO was proved to be a useful support for photocatalysts effective for both gas phase as well as liquid phase reactions and, GO–TiO2 can be a viable catalyst for gas phase decomposition of air-pollutants

    The experimental material comprised of 12 sesame genotypes of six lines black and brown seed and six testers white seed of various geographical origin. Crosses were made in Line x Tester fashion and thirty six hybrids were developed. The 36 F 1s along with parents were utilized for correlation study to assess the relationship between yield and its components traits. Biometrical data were recorded on twelve quantitative characters viz., days to fifty percent flowering, plant height cm , number of branches per plant, number of capsules on main stem, number of capsule per plant, capsule length cm , number of seeds per capsule, height of first node from base cm , height of first capsule cm , thousand seed weight g , single plant yield g and oil content .     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mathematics, 2015.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pages 93-96).In this thesis, we will study three topics related to Springer theory (specifically, the geometry of the exotic nilpotent cone, and two-block Springer fibers), and stability conditions for category 0. In the first chapter, we will be studying the geometry of the exotic nilpotent cone (which is a variant of the nilpotent cone in type C introduced by Kato). Bezrukavnikov has established a bijection between A+, the dominant weights for an arbitrary simple algebraic group H, and 0, the set of pairs consisting of a nilpotent orbit and a finite-dimensional irreducible representation of the isotropy group of the orbit (as originally conjectured by Lusztig and Vogan). Here we prove an analogous statement for the exotic nilpotent cone. In the second chapter (which is based on joint work with Rina Anno), we study the exotic t-structure for a two-block Springer fibre (i.e. for a nilpotent matrix of type (m + n, n) in type A). The exotic t-structure has been defined by Bezrukavnikov and Mirkovic for Springer theoretic varieties in order to study representations of Lie algebras in positive characteristic. Using techniques developed by Cautis and Kamnitzer, we show that the irreducible objects in the heart of the exotic t-structure are indexed by crossingless (m, m + 2n) matchings. We also show that the resulting Ext algebras resemble Khovanov's arc algebras (but placed on an annulus). In the third chapter, we study stability conditions on certain sub-quotients of category 0. Recently, Anno, Bezrukavnikov and Mirkovic have introduced the notion of a "real variation of stability conditions" (which are related to Bridgeland's stability conditions), and construct an example using categories of coherent sheaves on Springer fibers. Here we construct another example, by studying certain sub-quotients of category 0 with a fixed Gelfand-Kirillov dimension.     Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses

    Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied

During this nine month internship the author worked as an Engineer II in the Industrial Processes discipline of this large consulting engineering firm... The author's prime responsibility was as one of three lead design engineers on the design of a large wastewater treatment facility for a pulp mill in Hoquiam, Washington owned by ITT Rayonier Inc. The work generally consisted of the design of individual treatment units and associated piping and pumping. The purpose of the project was to provide wastewater treatment capabilities that would satisfy the effluent limitations (standards) imposed upon the mill by the State of Washington Department of Ecology and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The author's assignment also entailed necessary interaction with the project manager and other CH���M HILL design engineers and support staff members, the client's representatives, and representatives of two other consulting engineering firms working on the project. Thus, the internship position at CH���M HILL provided considerable experience coordinating the author's work with the work of other engineers, guiding the design and administrative efforts of a support staff, and interacting regularly with the client and other consulting firms. This broad exposure to a variety of engineering and organizational problems provided a valuable educational experience
