Deep Learning Method for Estimation of Morphological Parameters Based on CT Scans
: In this study, we propose a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with an assembly of non-linear fully connected layers for estimating body height and weight using a limited amount of data. This method can predict the parameters within acceptable clinical limits for most of the cases even when trained with limited data
Coronary thermodilution to assess flow reserve: validation in humans
Guide wire-based simultaneous measurement of fractional flow reserve (FFR) and coronary flow reserve (CFR) is important to understand microvascular disease of the heart. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of simultaneous measurement of FFR and CFR by one pressure-temperature sensor-tipped guide wire with the use of coronary thermodilution and to compare CFR by thermodilution (CFR(thermo)) with simultaneously measured Doppler CFR (CFR(Doppl))
Plasma granulysin levels and cellular interferon-gamma production correlate with curative host responses in tuberculosis, while plasma interferon-gamma levels correlate with tuberculosis disease activity in adults.

52707.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)Granulysin is a recently identified cytolytic protein which is expressed by human cytotoxic T-lymphocytes and natural killer (NK)-cells, and has broad antimicrobial and tumoricidal activity. Circulating granulysin levels are associated with T- and NK-cell activity, and may thus reflect protection-associated cellular immune responses. In a case-control study in Indonesia, a highly tuberculosis (TB)-endemic country, we therefore determined plasma granulysin levels in adults with active pulmonary TB before, during, and after TB treatment, both in mild/moderate-TB and advanced-TB patients, and compared these to healthy neighbourhood controls. Adults with active pulmonary TB had significantly lower plasma granulysin levels compared to controls. After 2 months of anti-TB therapy, levels in TB patients had significantly increased, reaching values similar to those in controls. Plasma granulysin levels further increased after completion of TB therapy, being significantly higher than those in controls. Plasma granulysin levels correlated inversely with TB disease activity but not with TB disease severity. In contrast, plasma interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) levels were significantly higher in active TB cases than in controls, normalised during treatment and correlated with both TB disease activity and TB disease severity. At the cellular level, granulysin and IFN-gamma expression both correlated inversely with disease activity. Interestingly, granulysin was predominantly expressed by IFN-gamma negative T-cells, suggesting that the cellular sources of IFN-gamma and granulysin in TB are partly non-overlapping. The observation that plasma granulysin levels and cellular IFN-gamma production correlate with curative host responses in pulmonary tuberculosis points to a potentially important role of granulysin, next to IFN-gamma, in host defence against M. tuberculosis
Influence of Radiative Heat Transfer on Convective Flows in Aircraft Cabins
In this paper the influence of radiative heat transfer on convective flows in aircraft cabins is considered. The results show that in thermally driven flows radiation heat transfer have an essential impact on the flow and must be considered for accurate flow predictions. A parallel Discrete Transfer Radiation Method (DTRM) for the simulation of the surface to surface radiation heat transfer is coupled with the DLR THETA code. Besides the standard boundary condition for wall heat radiation, a special treatment for transparent boundaries is implemented. It offers the possibility to specify the radiation heat flux and the direction of incidence of the sun through the cabin window. The energy is then distributed in the cabin by the DTRM. The DLR THETA code is an unstructured incompressible Navier-Stokes-Solver developed by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). It supports convective heat transport, very large grids, highly complex geometries and massive parallel computations

Mathematical modelling of the cardiovascular system
This paper is an introduction to the special issue of the Journal of Engineering Mathematic (Volume 47/3–4, 2003) on the mathematical modelling of the cardiovascular system. This issue includes the 2003 James Lighthill Memorial Paper written by Pedley [1] on the mathematical modelling of arterial fluid dynamics. This introduction is written to bring cardiovascular biomechanics to readers with a background in mathematical modelling and computational mechanics. The importance of mathematical modelling for physiological understanding, diagnostics, prosthesis development, patient selection and medical planning is indicated and discussed shortly. A subdivision into models for cardiac mechanics, pressure- and flow-wave propagation, mass transfer and fully three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction is made and references are given to the different contributions of the issue
