The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Its main application is packaging, mostly for single use. For this reason, managing the end-of-life of PET is an important issue. PET recycling is becoming increasingly common , but some issues remain, especially when it comes to blends of PET with other thermoplastics, such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA), a biobased thermoplastic whose production is increasing in the last few years. Covalent adaptable networks, which are polymer networks containing dynamic chemical bonds, have been reported as an efficient solution to improve the miscibility between incompatible thermoplastics and the mechanical properties of their blends. Several dynamic chemistries have been developed over the years to produce covalent adaptable networks. Among these, boronic ester metathesis is particularly interesting. Boronic esters are thermo-oxidatively stable, while their metathesis is rapid without the need for a catalyst. In this work, dynamic boronic esters were introduced by reactive extrusion into PLA and glycol modified PET (PETg), used as a model for PET, and the resulting materials were studied. The ester functions of the material, as well as its chain ends were used for this aim. A diol bis(boronic ester) was synthetized and incorporated in the material by transesterification with the ester groups, resulting in a decrease of the molar masses of the polymers. The kinetics of this process, the impact of the amount of diol and the influence of the catalyst nature and loading were studied. Then, the chain extension of the functional polymers was carried out with an isocyanate-based chain extender, poly(hexamethylene diisocyanate) (PHDI), for PLA, and with PHDI or an epoxy-based chain extender, bisphenol A diglycydyl ether (DGEBA) for PETg. Chain extension was performed in two steps, with boronic ester introduction followed by chain extension, or in one step, taking advantage of the chain ends of the polyesters. Blends of PLA and PETg were also prepared and compatibilized with PHDI and the diol bis(boronic ester), as well as with a non-dynamic diol. Blends of the modified material were prepared and studied as well. In all cases, the miscibility of PLA in PETg was improved by the modification with PHDI and a diol. While the presence of dynamic boronic ester functions did not significantly impact the miscibility of PLA and PETg, it seemed to induce better melt flow properties. Finally, a novel chain extender for PET and polyamines as well as an oligomer containing pendant alcohol and boronic ester functions were synthesized using radical addition fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization

Nucleation of semi-crystalline polymers, and in particular polypropylene, is an effective industrial strategy to control thermal, mechanical and optical properties and to shorten the compounding cycle. The design of nucleating agents remains industrially key to achieve desirable properties, such as toughness and optical clarity. The most cost-effective nucleating agents are low molecular weight organic molecules that form supramolecular self-assemblies in the polymer melt, which provide a heterogeneous surface that is favorable for the polymer to undergo epitaxial crystallization. Nevertheless, the design of nucleating agents is largely based on empirical relationships. In this study, we aimed to address this gap by exploring coassemblies of nucleating agents. We developed a complete methodology of analysis allowing a deep understanding of supramolecular systems in molten polymeric media. For this purpose, two nucleating agents were selected on the basis of their selectivity for different PP morphisms. Their assembly and structure were analyzed by spectrocopic, microscopic, calorimetric, and X-ray diffraction methods. We then proceeded to study the formation of the coassembled nucleating agents using the same set of techniques. Fitting and modeling of experimental measurements acquired at thermodynamic equilibrium allowed us to access the thermodynamic parameters of our system, which ultimately gave us insight into the nature of the hetero-interactions at a molecular level. This theoretical study revealed the microstructure of the obtained copolymers. We used this information to rationalize the structure-properties relationship of between nucleating agent structure and polypropylene crystallinity. Finally, inspired by this approach, we began to design and prepare a new model system that would allow us to understand these self-assembly processes at polymer-polymer interfaces

In particular, it has enabled the development of dynamic polymer cross-linking strategies. With the growing awareness of plastic pollution and the depletion of fossil resources, its development promises advances in the recycling and upcycling of polymer waste. The exchange reaction of phenoxytriazines and phenols has been investigated. A library of phenoxytriazines has been synthesized. Kinetic studies by NMR spectroscopy were then performed, showing the variation of the exchange rate over several orders of magnitude as a function of the substituents present on the triazine. The importance of the solvent on the reaction rate was also demonstrated. Cross-linking in solution of a previously synthesized polymer was achieved using this exchange chemistry. Dynamic mechanical analysis showed that the cross-linked polymers did indeed exhibit a rubbery plateau, in contrast to the non-cross-linked polymers. However, the presence of ionic aggregates limits the recyclability of these materials. The addition of an extrusion mixing step failed to make the network dynamic. Finally, the substitution reaction of an amine on an alkoxytriazine was developed for the functionalization of a low molar mass polyamide 11. The influence of triazine group substituents on the substitution reaction of alkoxytriazines is demonstrated. No increase of viscosity is observed in the melt for a functionalized polyamide compared to the starting polyamide

The introduction of dynamic covalent bonds can endow elastomers with improved recyclability, thus increasing their lifetime. Vitrimers are a particularly promising class of covalent adaptable networks for this purpose. Nevertheless, due to their Arrhenian-dependent viscosity, most vitrimers are difficult to process via extrusion or injection. Moreover, low-Tg vitrimers can exhibit poor creep-resistance due to the topological rearrangement of the network at service temperature. Herein, we explore both non-covalent and covalent approaches to address these issues. In the first approach, a new kind of additive called supramolecular organic fillers (SOFs) are described, which we define as low molar mass molecules that assemble into mechanically-reinforcing aggregates at service temperature and reversibly dissociate into molecular plasticizers at processing temperature. SOFs with a reactive 1,2-diol function were shown to improve the creep-resistance at low temperature and reduce the viscosity of the vitrimer at high temperature, while SOF without a reactive group only exhibited this latter property, highlighting the importance of the strength of the self-assembly for the mechanical reinforcement of the matrix. Following this, parameters such as the concentration and the chemical nature of the filler as well as the thermal history can be adjusted to modulate the viscoelastic properties of vitrimers. In the second approach, a scarcely-explored class of boronic esters featuring a boron-nitrogen dative bond called dioxazaborocanes was studied. Elastomeric vitrimers containing dioxazaborocane-based crosslinks exhibit fast dynamics of exchange, resulting in improved processability of these materials at the expense of a small loss of creep-resistance at low temperature
