    Jean-Louis Vignes: California's Forgotten Winemaker

    No full text
This article represents a first step in the process of restoring the legacy of pioneer California winemaker Jean-Louis Vignes (1780–1862). Vignes was a native of France who established and operated a commercial winery (El Aliso) in Los Angeles for 22 years (1833–1855). The article includes the first known photograph of Vignes discovered by the author. While prominent twentieth-century American wine historians have acknowledged Vignes, the author emphasizes a key distinction made by French historian Leonce Jore. Vignes left France to go to the Sandwich Islands as part of a commercial enterprise that traveled with Catholic missionaries (Picpus Fathers). Only after five years of frustration did Vignes move to Los Angeles and establish a winery. The author uses the remembrances of well-known nineteenth-century commentator William Heath Davis [Seventy-Five Years in California (San Francisco, 1929)] to give some personal insights into Vignes as a winemaker. Davis visited him at El Aliso three times as a young man and lived long enough (1909) to validate Vignes’s vision for the potential of winemaking in California. The article also includes the first known full citation for Vignes’s gravesite at Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles.</jats:p

First description of myxozoans from Syria: novel records of hexactinomyxon, triactinomyxon and endocapsa actinospore types

    Get PDF
Oligochaete worms collected in late March and early April 2005 from 3 freshwater biotopes in Syria were surveyed over an 11 wk period for myxosporean parasites (Myxozoa). Three types of novel actinospore stages were identified from 1 host species, Psammoryctides albicola. A hexactinomyxon was found in 6 P. albicola (7.5%) collected from a branch of the River Orontes, north of the city of Hama. A triactinomyxon and an endocapsa were found in single P. albicola specimens from the Al-Thaurah region of the Euphrates River (Lake Assad). No oligochaetes collected from Al-Ghab fish farm (Orontes region) released actinospores during the observation period. The present study is the first description of myxosporeans, including actinospore stages, from Syria. The 3 types described herein differ morphologically and molecularly (18S rDNA) from published records

The mixtures are generated using Scaper (https://github.com/justinsalamon/scaper) [1]. * Background files are extracted from SINS [2], MUSAN [3] or Youtube and have been selected because they contain a very low amount of our sound event classes. * Foreground files are extracted from Freesound [4][5] and manually verified to check the quality and segmented to remove silences. INTERREGIONAL COMPETITIVE IMPACT OF URBAN INFLUENCED FARMLAND PRICES

    Get PDF
The paper's hypothesis is that the farmers using land with urban influenced prices are at a competitive disadvantage because their land input cost exceeds its calitialized earning power while land prices for other farmers are based on earning ability. This hypothesis was investigated by comparing rates of return to land in Massachusetts and two non-urban dairy regions in Wisconsin. Both areas have low rates of return compared to contemporary market interest rates with Massachusetts rates somewhat below those in Wisconsin. When additional factors are considered, the hypothesis is weakly supported, at best.Land Economics/Use,

The Evolution of the Common Agricultural Policy and Social Differentiation in Rural Ireland

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the contribution of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to the process of social differentiation in contemporary rural Ireland. It traces the evolution of the CAP from its inception in 1962, and evaluates the social implications of two rounds of CAP reform and the recent introduction of agri-environmental schemes. It is argued that the underlying productivist rationale of the CAP has exacerbated the marginalisation of smaller farmers, especially in marginal areas. The recent introduction of the Rural Environment Protection Scheme (REPS) has cast these farmers in the role of environmental managers, while productivist agriculture continues unabated in other regions of the country.

A strategy formulation methodology for companies seeking to compete through IVHM enabled service delivery systems

    Get PDF
This thesis makes a contribution to knowledge through the development of a strategy formulation methodology for manufacturing organisations who wish to compete through advanced technology enabled service delivery systems. The research introduces the reader to the concept of Product Service Systems (PSS) and the process of ‘servitization’. It identifies Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) as one of a set of enabling technological applications, which if adopted, can facilitate the supply of “intelligent” or “informated” products. Such products enable the manufacturer to monitor the condition and usage of these products ‘in the field’ thereby enabling aligned service solutions to be offered. A five phase research programme is undertaken which seeks to understand the principles of IVHM and gain knowledge of the level of practitioner awareness of the concept and related issues. The research then explores and defines the concept of the service delivery system, and identifies and reviews operations strategy formulation methodologies. A pre-pilot methodology is adopted which is then tested via case application to generate a list of requirements and specification. A pilot methodology is designed to suit the specification and tested via industrial case studies and expert practitioner evaluation. The pilot methodology is finally refined prior to verification and validation through industrial case application and further expert practitioner evaluation. This research delivers a sequential and iterative strategy formulation methodology which fills a gap that is identified through a state of the art literature review and practitioner survey. The documented methodology is the result of a structured development and test programme and is shown to be feasible, useable and useful by test and validation by numerous manufacturing organisations. It makes a significant contribution to knowledge. This is attained through seeking to understand the organisation’s actual competitive position, its alignment to the stakeholder’s service requirements, and organisational structure. It also offers alignment relative to the level of technology adoption when offering intelligent/informated products. The research provides a strategy formulation methodology to deliver an enhanced service delivery system

Experience and everyday environment: a group reflective strategy

    Get PDF
The distinctiveness of this thesis lies in its use of Group and Researcher Reflection. It is a responsive and experiential study, which has two main aims: to explore the phenomenon, experience in the everyday environment, and to develop an appropriate method. The study centres round Group Reflection, which consists of a small group of local residents (in Ushaw Moor, Co Durham), who met regularly over a year, to reflect together. They met to explicate and explore their experience, particularly heightened experience, of their everyday environment, and together to recognise themes, and so reveal, develop and share their understanding. The group collected their themes under three general headings: nature, buildings and people. A report summarising this Group Reflection was produced with the group. The whole of the Group Reflection forms the basis for subsequent Researcher Reflection. This seeks alternative orderings and interpretation of the material explicated, themes and experiences, and considers their relationship to the wider literature on environmental experience. A number of alternative themes, or gatherings, are suggested: looking language, social concept, ordering regimes, person-environment engagement. Then, the concepts experience, place and dwelling are explored in the context of everyday environment, and a number of speculations are made about the possible changing nature of dwelling. The study is inspired by Phenomenology, and therefore seeks to allow the phenomenon to speak of itself: through those who have direct experience of it, and it hopes to take into account the essential entanglement of what is studied with those who study. Finally, it seeks to encourage readers to continue the reflective journey into their own exploration of experience in the everyday environment
