The psychomachia of the Sarmatian Faust : "Mistrz Twardowski" by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski in the context of medieval and early modern morality plays and their literary transformations

    No full text
The medieval and early modern morality plays took a great part in educating people about the benefits of living a good life and dangers of living a bad one. The psychomachia - a battle between the personified agents of good and evil with the human soul as the stake - was one of the most inspiring elements of such plays. We can find it in subsequent representations of modern drama, e.g. in Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus. The aim of the article is to analyze the psychomachia depicted in the 19 -century Polish variation on the Faustian legend - Mistrz Twardowski (Master Twardowski) by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. The author examines ties between the morality plays, Marlowe’s tragedy, and Kraszewski’s novel, showing similarities and inspirations as well as discussing how and for what purpose they were used in subsequent works of culture

Tema con variazioni by Romuald Twardowski — a contribution to the history of organ music in the Polish People’s Republic

    No full text
This paper discusses Tema con variazioni by Romuald Twardowski, composed in 1981, which deserves special attention as an example of breaking with the main stream of organ music of the era. Polish organ music history has largely remained unexamined, mainly due to the shortage of sources — handwritten pieces have either been destroyed or hard to find, whereas the number of printed works is quite small. More organ pieces appeared at the end of the 19th century, thanks to Stefan and Mieczysław Surzyński. The interwar period did not bring significant interest in or-gan music — the major composers were Feliks Nowowiejski and Aleksander Karczyński living in America; the only younger composer of achievement was Kazimierz Jurdziński. A quite large number of important organ works appeared during the Nazi occupation. The paper is divided into two parts. In the first part the author discusses the condition and typical features of organ music in the years of the Polish People’s Republic, i.e. after the 2nd World War, when professional organ music was separated from its natural background, i.e. performance in the church. As a symptomatic example Zbiór preludiów na organy bez pedału by Feliks Rączkowski is indicated — one of the only two books published then containing church cere-mony organ music. The article also provides information on R. Twardowski — a leading Polish composer of the 2nd half of the 20th century, born in 1930 in Wilno, with critical attitude towards the avant-garde trends. The main part of the paper deals with Tema con variazioni. After the presentation of its sec-tions, devices used by the composer are discussed. Special attention is paid to the harmony deriving from the late-Romantic tradition. Finally, the author tries the “economical” approach to the organ concert repertoire and under-lines the advantages of the piece which, although short and simple, deserves attention

The place and role of artistic definition in a poetic text (as exemplified by the poetry of Jan Twardowski)

    No full text
The artistic (or poetic) definition is one of the components of the world created by the author. It is usually in the formal shape of syntactic structure, typical of definitions, however, it does not meet the requirements of classic or colloquial definition. The artistic definition is subjective in as much as it is a personal suggestion of the author how to define an object or a phenomenon in a particular text. The aim of my study was to establish the linguistic form and the function of poetic definitions in the poems by Jan Twardowski. The analysis, which has been carried out from this angle, provokes some general reflections: 1. In the poetry by Jan Twardowski we can frequently see the poetic definitions in the form of three-piece structures: definiendum, linking device (function words such as is, which is, which means or a dash) as well as definiens; 2. The meaning of both definiendum and definiens needs to be interpreted in the context of whole poem; 3. In many definitions there is no reference to genus proximum or it is untypical, surprising; 4. In the poems by Twardowski the poetic definitions are usually related to the fundamental issues, important to human existence: faith, death, emotions (love), mental states (despair, loneliness); 5. The poetical definitions in the poems by Jan Twardowski are one of the important components of the created world. They indicate the importance of the distinguished as well as characterized objects and phenomena from the viewpoint of a man of faith.Uniwersytet GdańskiChojak J., 2010, Kilka pytań o definicję poetycką, [w:] Człowiek, słowo, świat, red.
