    Linear Operator Inequality and Null Controllability with Vanishing Energy for Unbounded Control Systems

    We consider a linear boundary or point control system on a Hilbert space HH which is null controllable at some time T0>0T_0 >0. To every initial state y0H y_0 \in H we associate the minimal ``energy'' needed to transfer y0 y_0 to 0 0 in a time TT0 T \ge T_0 (``energy'' of a control being the square of its L2 L^2 norm). Clearly, it decreases with the control time T T . We shall prove that, under suitable spectral properties of the linear system operator, the minimal energy converges to 0 0 for $ T\to+\infty

    Null Subjects in Northeast English

    This paper presents data and analysis relating to null subjects in spoken colloquial English. While English is not a „pro-drop? language (i.e. subjects must usually be overt), a corpus of speech collected on Tyneside and Wearside in 2007 shows that null subjects are permitted in finite clauses in certain contexts. This paper analyses these examples and follow-up questionnaires, and compares the data with the other types of null subject described in the literature (pro-drop, topic-drop, early null subjects, aphasics? null subjects and „diary-drop?), ultimately concluding that the colloquial English phenomenon is most closely related to diary- drop

    The appearance, motion, and disappearance of three-dimensional magnetic null points

C.E.P. acknowledges support from the St Andrews 2013 STFC Consolidated grant.While theoretical models and simulations of magnetic reconnection often assume symmetry such that the magnetic null point when present is co-located with a flow stagnation point, the introduction of asymmetry typically leads to non-ideal flows across the null point. To understand this behavior, we present exact expressions for the motion of three-dimensional linear null points. The most general expression shows that linear null points move in the direction along which the magnetic field and its time derivative are antiparallel. Null point motion in resistive magnetohydrodynamics results from advection by the bulk plasma flow and resistive diffusion of the magnetic field, which allows non-ideal flows across topological boundaries. Null point motion is described intrinsically by parameters evaluated locally; however, global dynamics help set the local conditions at the null point. During a bifurcation of a degenerate null point into a null-null pair or the reverse, the instantaneous velocity of separation or convergence of the null-null pair will typically be infinite along the null space of the Jacobian matrix of the magnetic field, but with finite components in the directions orthogonal to the null space. Not all bifurcating null-null pairs are connected by a separator. Furthermore, except under special circumstances, there will not exist a straight line separator connecting a bifurcating null-null pair. The motion of separators cannot be described using solely local parameters because the identification of a particular field line as a separator may change as a result of non-ideal behavior elsewhere along the field line.Peer reviewe

    Asymptotic null distributions of stationarity and nonstationarity

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate the asymptotic null distribution of stationarity and nonstationarity tests when the distribution of the error term belongs to the normal domain of attraction of a stable law in any finite sample but the error term is an i.i.d. process with finite variance as T " 1. This local-to-finite variance setup is helpful to highlight the behavior of test statistics under the null hypothesis in the borderline or near borderline cases between finite and infinite variance and to assess the robustness of these test statistics to small departures from the standard finite variance context. From an empirical point of view, our analysis can be useful in settings where the (non)-existence of the (second) moments is not clear-cut, such as, for example, in the analysis of financial time series. A Monte Carlo simulation study is performed to improve our understanding of the practical implications of the limi theory we develop.     Current sheet formation and nonideal behavior at three-dimensional magnetic null points

    The nature of the evolution of the magnetic field, and of current sheet formation, at three-dimensional (3D) magnetic null points is investigated. A kinematic example is presented that demonstrates that for certain evolutions of a 3D null (specifically those for which the ratios of the null point eigenvalues are time-dependent), there is no possible choice of boundary conditions that renders the evolution of the field at the null ideal. Resistive magnetohydrodynamics simulations are described that demonstrate that such evolutions are generic. A 3D null is subjected to boundary driving by shearing motions, and it is shown that a current sheet localized at the null is formed. The qualitative and quantitative properties of the current sheet are discussed. Accompanying the sheet development is the growth of a localized parallel electric field, one of the signatures of magnetic reconnection. Finally, the relevance of the results to a recent theory of turbulent reconnection is discussed

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Object drop in L3 acquisition

    The topic of cross-linguistic differences regarding the overt or null expression of arguments has been considered both in first (L1) and second language (L2) acquisition. There is abundant literature on both subject and object drop with different language pairings but the issue has not been considered in third language (L3) acquisition. The main goal of this article is to analyse the L3 interlanguage of Basque-Spanish bilinguals regarding the acceptability and interpretation of null objects. The three languages involved in the study display different semantic requirements for the target structure, with Basque allowing for a null object option across-the-board, Spanish only under certain semantic conditions, and English disallowing it in the standard variety. Two trilingual, one bilingual and a control group (n = 119) rated experimental items embedded in context, presented in a written and aural format on a computer screen. Findings point to the successful acquisition of the target structure, as well as a clear influence of Spanish in the three experimental groups

    Estimation in threshold autoregressive models with a stationary and a unit root regime

    This paper treats estimation in a class of new nonlinear threshold autoregressive models with both a stationary and a unit root regime. Existing literature on nonstationary threshold models have basically focused on models where the nonstationarity can be removed by differencing and/or where the threshold variable is stationary. This is not the case for the process we consider, and nonstandard estimation problems are the result. This paper proposes a parameter estimation method for such nonlinear threshold autoregressive models using the theory of null recurrent Markov chains. Under certain assumptions, we show that the ordinary least squares (OLS) estimators of the parameters involved are asymptotically consistent. Furthermore, it can be shown that the OLS estimator of the coefficient parameter involved in the stationary regime can still be asymptotically normal while the OLS estimator of the coefficient parameter involved in the nonstationary regime has a nonstandard asymptotic distribution. In the limit, the rate of convergence in the stationary regime is asymptotically proportional to n-1/4, whereas it is n-1 in the nonstationary regime. The proposed theory and estimation method are illustrated by both simulated data and a real data example.Autoregressive process; null-recurrent process; semiparametric model; threshold time series; unit root structure.

    On k-type null Cartan slant helices in Minkowski 3-space

In this paper, we define k-type null Cartan slant helices lying on a timelike surface in Minkowski space E 31 according to their Darboux frame, where k ε {0, 1, 2}.We study these helices by using their geodesic curvature, normal curvature, and geodesic torsion. Additionally, we determine their axes and consider the special cases when the mentioned helices are geodesic curves and principal curvature lines lying on the timelike surface in E 31 . Furthermore,we obtain some interesting relations between 0-, 1-, and 2-type null Cartan slant helices
