    Bo: An intelligent network agent to promote physical activity in children with Congenital Heart Defects

    There are various organisations such as the European Society of Cardiology (2012) and American Heart Association (2013), which describe why physical activity is essential for the development in youth. Unfortunately, children who have a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD), may suffer from a lack of opportunity to perform physical activity, decreasing cognitive maturation, motor development and autonomy during childhood (Krol, 2003). This impediment arises due to a misunderstanding from parents, who do not know to what extent their child can exercise safely, and therefore adopt overprotective behaviours (Schwerzmann, Thomet, & Moons, 2016).In order to understand better overprotection during childhood, 305 online parental stories from various patient-association websites were analysed using Natural-Language-Processing techniques. The results exhibited the lifetime journey of these families, where an uncertain future evocated a constant search for symptoms. The findings of this phase were employed during generative interviews with seven families with a CHD paediatric patient to understand the continuous search for symptoms during exercise. The combination of the insights gathered from interviews and the lifetime journey was presented to five medical team members to inspire a co-creation session. The outcome of the meeting helped to define the problem and create a design vision which helped to ideate a potential Product-Service-System (PSS) solution to support parents to let their children safely perform physical activities. To encourage families to have a safe, ordinary sports-life, BO is introduced, a smart PSS aiming to support parents and their children with a CHD to understand better the safety boundaries of exercise during free-living conditions. With an activity tracker and his nine system modules, Bo aims to guide the child through different heart rate zones defined by doctors. Furthermore, Bo has a conversational agent function where parents can send concerns to the medical team and find relief when seeing their child’s heart rate zone.A functional prototype of the conversational agent was developed and implemented in the real context of four families to understand how could it influence overprotection. The implementation experience and overall concept of Bo were evaluated through in-depth interviews with paediatric CHD patients and their parents and three different specialities from the medical team. The results showed that Bo provides a supportive exploratory environment for the family, where the child can self-discover the safety boundaries and parents, instead of limiting the child, adopt an encouraging attitude towards physical activity.Integrated Product Design | Medisig

    AbstractThe architecture of Brazil, which has recently been in the focus with major events (World Cup and Olympics) holds a particular place in Latin America's architecture and is known for its bold modernism. One of the most remarkable Brazilian architects in the 20th Century was Italian émigré Lina Bo Bardi (born Rome 1914-died São Paulo 1992).This article first looks at the regional diversity in modern Brazilian architecture and then at the ways in which Bo Bardi's sustainable and socially-conscious design is informed by regionalism. Regions are defined through their local materials, tectonics and particular typologies, and the architectural character defining regional spaces, in turn, shapes, retains and enhances social identity. It is timely to reassess the diverse work of Bo Bardi within Latin-America's modernism. Arriving in Brazil in 1946, Bo Bardi was, as well as an architect, a furniture designer, urbanist, political activist, writer and curator.Previous studies have sought to identify the architects and theorists involved in the making of the modern cultural identity of Brazil, and the mechanisms that created such identity, from Lucio Costa to Oscar Niemeyer. Bo Bardi's work marks the beginning of sustainable design within Brazilian modern architecture; especially the adaptive re-use projects in Salvador, Bahia, identify the beginning of a new approach to heritage and urban renewal.Therefore, in this article I ask: what exactly is the contribution and role of the work of Bo Bardi in Brazilian modernism?     Ethics is inherently a multiagent concern. However, research on AI ethics today is dominated by work on individual agents: (1) how an autonomous robot or car may harm or (differentially) benefit people in hypothetical situations (the so-called trolley problems) and (2) how a machine learning algorithm may produce biased decisions or recommendations. The societal framework is largely omitted. To develop new foundations for ethics in AI, we adopt a sociotechnical stance in which agents (as technical entities) help autonomous social entities or principals (people and organizations). This multiagent conception of a sociotechnical system (STS) captures how ethical concerns arise in the mutual interactions of multiple stakeholders. These foundations would enable us to realize ethical STSs that incorporate social and technical controls to respect stated ethical postures of the agents in the STSs.     Automated configuration of negotiation strategies

    Bidding and acceptance strategies have a substantial impact on the outcome of negotiations in scenarios with linear additive and nonlinear utility functions. Over the years, it has become clear that there is no single best strategy for all negotiation settings, yet many fixed strategies are still being developed. We envision a shift in the strategy design question from: What is a good strategy?, towards: What could be a good strategy? For this purpose, we developed a method leveraging automated algorithm configuration to find the best strategies for a specific set of negotiation settings. By empowering automated negotiating agents using automated algorithm configuration, we obtain a flexible negotiation agent that can be configured automatically for a rich space of opponents and negotiation scenarios. To critically assess our approach, the agent was tested in an ANAC-like bilateral automated negotiation tournament setting against past competitors. We show that our automatically configured agent outperforms all other agents, with a 5.1% increase in negotiation payoff compared to the next-best agent.     Hyper-Null Models and Their Applications

    Null models are crucial tools for investigating network topological structures. However, research on null models for higher-order networks is still relatively scarce. In this study, we introduce an innovative method to construct null models for hypergraphs, namely the hyperedge swapping-based method. By preserving certain network properties while altering others, we generate six hyper-null models with various orders and analyze their interrelationships. To validate our approach, we first employ hypergraph entropy to assess the randomness of these null models across four datasets. Furthermore, we examine the differences in important statistical properties between the various null models and the original networks. Lastly, we investigate the impact of hypergraph randomness on network dynamics using the proposed hyper-null models, focusing on dismantling and epidemic contagion. The findings show that our proposed hyper-null models are applicable to various scenarios. By introducing a comprehensive framework for generating and analyzing hyper-null models, this research opens up avenues for further exploration of the intricacies of network structures and their real-world implications

    Roosevelt "Bo" Richmond was an amateur photographer from Alabama. He photographed events, buildings, people, and documented the Civil Rights movement in Atlanta in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This collection contains photographs of people, events and places in Atlanta, Georgia. Included are photographs of Henry "Hank" Aaron, Hosea Williams at the sanitation workers strike, Jesse Jackson at the March Against Repression, Martin Luther King, Jr. at the barber shop and photos of the funeral procession for Martin Luther King, Jr. At the AUC Robert W.     Elessar: Ethics in Norm-Aware Agents

    We address the problem of designing agents that navigate social norms by selecting ethically appropriate actions. We present Elessar, a framework in which agents aggregate value preferences of users and select ethically appropriate actions through multicriteria decision making in different social contexts. Via simulations, seeded with a survey of user values and attitudes, we find that Elessar agents act ethically and are effective than baseline agents, in terms of (1) exhibiting the Rawlsian property of fairness, and (2) yielding a satisfactory social experience to users.     Fas-apoptotic inhibitory molecule 2 localizes to the lysosome and facilitates autophagosome-lysosome fusion through the LC3 interaction region motif-dependent interaction with LC3

    Fas-apoptotic inhibitory molecule 2 (FAIM2) is a member of the transmembrane BAX inhibitor motif-containing (TMBIM) family. TMBIM family is comprised of six anti-apoptotic proteins that suppress cell death by regulating endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ homeostasis. Recent studies have implicated two TMBIM proteins, GRINA and BAX Inhibitor-1, in mediating cytoprotection via autophagy. However, whether FAIM2 plays a role in autophagy has been unknown. Here we show that FAIM2 localizes to the lysosomes at basal state and facilitates autophagy through interaction with microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 proteins in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. FAIM2 overexpression increased autophagy flux, while autophagy flux was impaired in shRNA-mediated knockdown (shFAIM2) cells, and the impairment was more evident in the presence of rapamycin. In shFAIM2 cells, autophagosome maturation through fusion with lysosomes was impaired, leading to accumulation of autophagosomes. A functional LC3-interacting region motif within FAIM2 was essential for the interaction with LC3 and rescue of autophagy flux in shFAIM2 cells while LC3-binding property of FAIM2 was dispensable for the anti-apoptotic function in response to Fas receptor-mediated apoptosis. Suppression of autophagosome maturation was also observed in a null mutant of Caenorhabditis elegans lacking xbx-6, the ortholog of FAIM2. Our study suggests that FAIM2 is a novel regulator of autophagy mediating autophagosome maturation through the interaction with LC3. © 2019 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.1
