FE687, a 5-page fact sheet by Rodney L. Clouser, Ronald Muraro, and Laila Racevskis, describes the results of a survey conducted in May 2006 to provide an estimate of the value of different types of agricultural land for geographic regions of the state. It describes changes in the survey from past surveys and provides a summary of results. Includes references and tables. Published by the UF Department of Food and Resource Economics, April 2007. Numerical investigation of the equipment set-up in triaxial testing of soft soils

    No full text
Element testing of soft soils is challenging due to the large strains attained in the pre-failure range. Besides the heterogeneity of natural samples, the set-up configuration is the main driving factor for non-homogenous response. Stress, strain and pore pressure non-uniformities induced by the loading system affect the observed behaviour and complicate proper interpretation of the results. Among the difficulties encountered in the interpretation of laboratory data, the unexpected decrease of the stress ratio frequently observed on Dutch organic soft clays on the wet side of critical state is investigated by numerically back-analysing the triaxial test set-up. A 3D finite element simulation using an advanced constitutive model for soft clays developed at TU Delft was performed to clarify the nature of the response. The results indicate that a decrease in the deviatoric stress up to critical state may be interpreted as a true feature of the soil response. However, the response at large strains is very much influenced by the triaxial shear apparatus, in particular, by the rotation of the top cap which triggers geometrical instability. Practical recommendations are given to limit the effects of the set-up configuration on the determination of the undrained shear strength to be used for field applications.Geo-engineerin

Dormouse (Myoxus glis L., 1766) cortical injuries on beech. Do they predispose Nectria ditissima Tul. infections?

    No full text
The dormouse (Myoxus glis L.) is widespread in all the Italian forests, islands included, from the sea level to the upper forest limit. Its diet is mainly vegetarian and includes many tree portions, among which it prefers seeds and fruits. Once spent the winter in a lethargy that, depending on the site, usually lasts from November to the beginning of May, in spring it begins its trophic activity on young cortex stripping the xylem in shape of wedge, ring or spiral at the basis of the distal shoot of conifers or on the younger branches of broadleaves. The fungus Nectria ditissima Tul. is a typical wound parasite that causes stem cankers on both beech and other broadleaves. Main symptoms are 1) the development of a wide, open canker at the infection point, which recovery is prevented by pathogenetic phenomena also due to further infections by wood decaying fungi, and 2) the stem defoliation and drying above the canker

Protective activity and immunogenicity of two recombinant anthrax vaccines for veterinary use.

In this study, the efficacy of two experimental vaccines against Bacillus anthracis toxinaemia was evaluated in the rabbit model. A recombinant Protective Antigen (rPA) mutant and a trivalent vaccine (TV) composed by the rPA, a inactive mutant of Lethal Factor (mLF-Y728A; E735A) and a inactive mutant of Edema Factor (mEF-K346R), both emulsified with mineral oils, were evaluated for their immunogenicity and protective activity in New Zealand white rabbits. Rabbits vaccinated subcutaneously with rPA and TV rapidly produced high level of anti-PA, anti-LF and anti-EF antibodies, which were still present 6 months later. In the efficacy test, these vaccines protected 100% of rabbits challenged with B. anthracis virulent strain 0843 one week after the vaccination. Moreover, all animals vaccinated twice with rPA and TV, resisted B. anthracis infection 6 months later. Our data indicate that rPA and TV could be good vaccine candidates for inducing protection against B. anthracis infection in target animal host. They could successfully be used in an emergency with simultaneous long-acting antibiotics to halt incubating infections or during an anthrax epidemic

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
