Digital transformationand knowledge management
Knowledge capital is at the core of the socio-economic global system. Profit and not-for profit firms, institutions, and organizations, in general, face unique opportunities and threats related to knowledge management. Digital technologies and digital transformation offer a wide array of opportunities for value creation. At the same time, organizations need to foster newer, faster, and more dynamic ways of mobilizing and managing knowledge. Emerging trends, such as artificial intelligence, collective intelligence, agile methodologies, open innovation, and co-creation enable new business models and managerial paradigms that need to be understood and conceptualized. This book offers an extensive overview of the most recent trends in knowledge management and the most advanced theoretical approaches, while, at the same time, providing a wide array of case studies and evidence-based knowledge management practices. It takes into account the interrelation between ICT and knowledge management challenges, in terms of human/non-human interactions, which requires extraordinary organizational change and renewal. Further, the book presents an up-to-date examination of and guidance for the implementation of knowledge management in an era of unprecedented human/non-human interaction. The book conveys the results of more than a decade of research and applied experience in the field of knowledge management carried out by the author. It is intended not only for students and academics but also for managers and practitioners who are interested in deepening their understanding of knowledge and learning

The investments in energy distribution networks: Does company ownership matter?
This paper revolves around the challenges currently tackled by the energy distribution sector, where infrastructural investments play a vital role in both increasing the industry’s internal efficiency and developing national economies. In natural gas and electricity sectors, the liberalisation process began in Europe at the end of the 1990s has triggered a change in the industry’s competitive framework, encouraging investments by companies aiming at improving their industrial and organisational efficiency. At the same time, liberalisation also brought about a change in the ownership of firms: Private and mixed ownership companies are now actively participating in the market, together with state-owned enterprises. In the light of these significant changes, this study is aimed at establishing whether the companies’ propensity to invest in infrastructures is connected with a specific form of ownership. So far, this specific topic has not been thoroughly investigated by empirical studies; this work tries to fill this gap by carrying out an empirical analysis on a sample of Italian energy distribution utilities operating in the natural gas and electricity sector
Birds of a Feather Flock Together: Can Knowledge Management and Communities Prevent Organizational Silos?
This research aims to investigate the relationship among knowledge, knowledge management, and intra-firm social networks, focusing on actual networks that emerge when knowledge management practices are enacted within a business organization. As shown in the literature, intra-organizational networks tend to be strongly homophile, especially in terms of organizational units affiliation (silos organization). Indeed, preventing organizational silos and fostering diversity in knowledge sharing is useful to encourage creativity and innovation. Thus, knowledge management practices are sought that reduce the homophily tendency. Through a quantitative longitudinal analysis of online communities within a large telecommunication company, we show that t knowledge management projects are able to enhance connections among people with different knowledge and facilitate communication and collaboration processes at cross-functional level
