Trasfo_mace.

Renato Calamida Marco Lucchini Fabrizio Schiaffonati: Architetti
The volume takes a critical look at a progression of cultural and professional developments extending for more than forty years, though its contents reach far beyond the declaration ensconced in its title: “Renato Calamida Marco Lucchini Fabrizio Schiaffonati Architetti”, and namely the aim of illustrating the professional history of the principals of the CLS architectural firm
Refinement and “Less is More” in Luigi Caccia Dominioni’s Language
Architecure Context Responsability constitutes a discussion on modern architecture in the existing spatial context. Urban tissue, with its core historical structures expands constantly, enriching with new elements - cultural manifestation of contemporary visioneers and patrons. This appears particularly meaningful for the purpose of reflection on the necessity to link transformation practices of the existing with theoretical tools typical of architectural design. Main themes of the discussion focus on heritage and sustainability, As the main determinants of harmonious continuation and growth of the city
Sensitization of designers to the needs of people with disabilities. Application of experiences in residential interior solutions in Milan
The coordinated experimental and design activities presented in this article are dedicated to the topic of design for people with disabilities. They involve two dimensions. The first and most significant is to draw the attention of future designers and current Interior Design students to the challenges in using space encountered by people with disabilities. To achieve this, sensitization training (workshops) was conducted through simulated disability experiences. Personal experiences and the identification of real difficulties in accessing the surrounding space served as a starting point for design activities: solutions for residential spaces intended for use by people with disabilities in Milan along Via De Amicis. The projects were carried out in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano as part of the Collaborating Classroom initiative, aimed at jointly achieving educational goals in different parts of the world using a shared digital environment and information and communication technologies (ICT). The basis for interior development was architectural projects created by students within Design Lab1 under the guidance of Prof. Marco Lucchini. The subject of the architectural project was a five-story residential building, in which some units were fully adapted for wheel-chair users, crutch users, or blind individuals. Changes, modifications, and improvements made by the students were based on individual experiences of simulating disabilities through the execution of organized tasks outlined in a proprietary accessibility questionnaire (Table 1, 2). Observations of movement, overcoming obstacles, using toilets, and other pieces of furniture were used to create non-obvious functional-spatial solutions linked to design solutions from the field of interior design and design
The Quarto Cagnino District in Milan (1964-1973): Rationalist Figuration for a New Dimension of the Urban space.
The Quarto Cagnino district, like other Milanese social housing settlements, has a distinctly marked identity and, as with any other architectural work, its framework calls for formulating a well-founded judgement based on the understanding of its context and the reasons that led the designers towards specific choices in form. The district designed for 1100 dwellings (approximately 5000 inhabitants) was built in two distinct phases between 1964 and 1973. Regarding the settlement plan, the Quarto Cagnino appears as a largely scaled construction organised into one main edifice, to which are connected four aligned buildings, perpendicular to the main body, and alternately placed on either side. Quarto Cagnino faces with the problem of the integration of the dwellings providing an adequate amount of services, of which the scarcity had been one of the deficiencies of large popular districts. The image of the large dam, referring also explicitly to the theme of city walls, was associated with the idea of a constant permeability. The stereometric and Cartesian volumes of the buildings are built upon a powerful base of reinforced concrete that seems to lift itself from the ground thanks to a grid of cylindrical pillars. The open plan of the ground floor is an obvious reference to Le Corbusier and his Unité d'habitation quoted almost literally. The open ground floor enables secondary roads to be drawn underneath the buildings, emphasizing the image of the great structure that connects with communication networks and guarantees a good development of service activities: some to the scale of the district such as primary and secondary schools, gymnasiums and the church, others to the scale of the building itself such as common spaces in which to gather
