Aitmatov's Spiral of Silence: Jamila
The spiral of silence as a model of communication was developed by Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann to observe the influence of public opinion in determining an individual's beliefs. Therefore, even if the individual has contrary ideas to the public perception, in order not to be excluded, the individual expresses his/her opinion according to the general beliefs of the society and becomes silent. In some cases, this silence may lead the person to change existing ideas and adopt the ideas of the society, whereas in other cases, due to anxiety, it may take the form of not being able to express ideas that are contrary to the society, even if they believe in their truth. In either case, the individual suffers and is unable to resist in the face of public opinion. As a communication theory, the spiral of silence and the events that the characters in Chyngyz Aitmatov's story Jamila experience coincide. From this point of view, in this study, in Chyngyz Aitmatov's story Jamila, the events experienced by Jamila and her relatives, who entered into a spiral of silence due to the fear of being marginalized from society as a result of a forbidden relationship, were analyzed by content analysis method. The story of Jamila and the model of the silence spiral have been widely discussed in the literature from a variety of perspectives. Unfortunately, there are no studies in the literature in which the protagonist of the story, Jamila and her relatives are analyzed with a focus on the spiral of silence. In this respect, therefore, this study is of a huge significance. In addition, the analysis and observations made in the study will also contribute to the moral discussions of the story. However, the study has avoided adopting neither positive nor negative approach in formulating the conceptual framework of the spiral of silence. The relationship between Jamila and Daniyar and Seyit's childish love for Jamila are dealt within the framework of the spiral of silence that the protagonists have chosen to keep silent, focusing on how they behave rather than how they should have behaved. The study concluded that through composing this novel, Aitmatov was able to break free from the spiral of silence that he had fallen into as a result of his childhood love for Jamile

seorang politikus.
