Institutional praxis and work The article, starting from an examination of the concept of institution as it has been advanced in the human and philosophical sciences, tries to dis-cuss the theme of labor democracy in neoliberal capitalism. According to the author, it is necessary to develop a new kind of form of enterprise idea starting from what is defined as principle of the common. The practices of the common are defined as institutional practices that consist, not only in projecting a desirable end towards the future, but also in implementing, here and now, a principle of self-government of social and productive world, achievable through the definition of a new collective political sub-ject . Contributing to bring out this common political action remains an ax-is of the struggle against the new management, which destroys the moral and collective dimension of work

Beyond the ‘salary institution’: on the ‘society of performance’ and the platformisation of the employment relationship

In this contribution the author discusses the intimate relationship between the crisis of the wage labour system of industrial capitalism and the growing diffusion of spaces of exploitation related to the explosion of digital algorithms and platforms. In other words, it is argued that capitalist transformation (in the post-Fordist sense) has had a decisive impact on the social relationship of subordination by inscribing the practices of exploitation of labour into an extended space that the traditional category of subsumption was not able to describe effectively. Even more specifically, work in contemporary society – a society where the digital paradigm takes on an unprecedented configuration through the platformisation of capital-work relationships – is forced to redefine itself as a mere performance, where performance means an activity that is basically stripped from the social protections of paid employment and is legitimised on a social level only by virtue of its immediate commercial usability. In other words, work in the society of performance is a subjective space deprived of the (formal and substantial) protective dimensions that were specified during what is sometimes referred to as the wage-earning society. At the same time, work is also a space subjected to an extraction of value according to a precise and renewed neoliberal logic that finds in the new urban fabric a place to renew its social hegemony

Platform, Sharing or Gig? Ambiguities and Ambivalences of the Digitalization of the Economy

The rapid growth of the debate around the crucial transformations that our economy is having through the development and public diffusion of digital technologies seems to have a consequence: the confusing multiplications of words and concepts regarding labour and the following difficulty in formulating univocal definitions. Thus, such ambiguity often impedes to focus the real extent that the impact of digital technologies is having on our society. While in its initial stage their potential in reshaping the organization of services provision has attracted optimist comments from scholars and commentators, especially after workers started to organize and struggle, a flourishing critical literature has later emerged. In this article we want to frame a potential critical point of view on these transformations, focusing on some specific configurations they assumed: the platform business model and the so-called gig and sharing economy. We will start by scrutinizing the concept of platform. At first glance, platform is a business model allowing for the creation of new market places for the exchange of labour power, resources and assets, but they are also responsible of reconfiguring working processes and labour relations towards an algorithm-based exploitation. Secondly, we will move towards sharing economy and gig economy, which represent emerging sectors that, on the other side, condense larger socio-economic transformations. Our aim is to show how these concepts represent a contested terrain between long term innovations, digital technologies and labour struggles

CAPITALISMO COME ASSIOMATICA SOCIALE. NOTE A MARGINE SUL CONCETTO DI SFRUTTAMENTO

Exploitation is still an essential analytical category to understand capitalism and its most recent transformations. However, the same concept should be profoundly reconsidered and updated. In this article the author attempts, in this regard, to contaminate the Marxian theoretical perspective on the exploitation with Deleuze and Guattari’s analysis, as they proposed in their works about capitalism and schizophrenia. In particular, what is being argued is the necessity of reading the exploitation in the contemporary capitalism according to a operative double logic: on the one hand a dialectic logic based on the subsumption of labour to capital (but less and less relevant), on the other a axiomatic logic based on the impression of the subjectivity to capital (instead increasingly relevant). The functional relationships between these two different logics of capitalism have to be continually mended and integrated together and, just for this reason, they are, eventually, here identified as the space of fragility of the contemporary capitalist system
