'To all who live in it' : an investigation of the dilemmas of, and prospects for, inclusive citizenship in South Africa
This study is a literature-based analysis of the prospects for inclusive citizenship in light of the contradiction between formal political equality and the reality of socio-economic inequality within the context of post-apartheid South Africa. In approaching the topic of citizenship, I will employ T.H. Marshall's conceptual framework of three-fold citizenship to establish the civil, political and social elements and associated sets of rights within citizenship
Outpatient treatment of retinal detachment
CITATION: Van Rooyen, M.M.B., Van Biljon, G. & Du Toit, A.M. 1989. Outpatient treatment of retinal detachment. South African Medical Journal, 75:12-15.The original publication is available at http://www.samj.org.zaOutpatient treatment of retinal detachment is a new concept. The first 20 cases treated in the Department of Ophthalmology at Tygerberg Hospital are discussed. After an inert gas has been injected into the vitreous cavity the patient is allowed to go home, where he must remain in the therapeutic position. When the patient returns the next day the retina will usually be reattached around the breaks, and laser photocoagulation or cryopexy is performed. The succes rate is high, and this procedure should be considered in all cases in which it is indicated.Publisher’s versio

1. The period prior to the institution of short-interval dipping, i.e.
between 1902 and 1910.
2. The short-interval clipping period, i.e. between 1910 and 1929.
3. The period of intensive control, i. e. between 1929 and the present

Student governance in transition : University democratisation and managerialism : a governance approach to the study of student politics and the case of the University of Cape Town
Includes bibliographical references (p. 209.245).In the aftermath of university democratisation, only one critical change in university governance has sparked nearly as much academic interest and debate: the rise of managerialism. The participation of students in university governance was the key issue in debates on university democratisation; however, in the recent debates about managerialism in universities, there is little mention of the new place of students in university governance. This dissertation revisits the general topic of student participation in university governance. It sets out to provide a theoretical and empirical perspective on the interaction between university democratisation and the rise of managerialism in terms of their respective impacts on student participation in university governance. It does so in a number of ways: (i) based on a literature review of international debates and trends; (ii) by developing a theoretical framework for a governance approach applied to higher education, and; (iii) through an extended case study of student politics and transitions of university governance. In the theoretical investigation, I adapt Goran Hyden's theoretical conceptualisation of 'governance' for a study of student participation in university governance. Key to the adaptation is a typology of four ideal-type regimes of student governance focused on respectively different conceptions of 'student' involved in different justifications of the inclusion (and exclusion) of students in formal decision-making in universities. This typology and related conceptualisations of regime transitions is nested within distinct 'visions' of the university and embedded in Hyden's general governance approach
Photosynthetic responses of Lessertia frutescens to different shading conditions
Master of Science in Botany, North-West University, Potchefstroom CampusLight manipulation is crucial for optimizing plant growth and photosynthetic performance. This study investigated how different shading conditions influence the photosynthetic efficiency of Lessertia frutescens, a medicinal plant with significant pharmacological value. Plants were grown under grey, white, and green (40%) laminated shade netting and compared to an unshaded control. Key photosynthetic parameters, including chlorophyll fluorescence, PSI redox states, absorption fluxes, cross-section parameters, and chlorophyll content, were measured using a Handy-PEA fluorescence meter and a CCM-300 chlorophyll content meter. Results showed that shading improved photosynthetic performance relative to full sunlight, likely due to reduced photoinhibition and optimized light interception. Shaded plants exhibited a higher maximum quantum yield (FV/FM) and total performance index (PITOTAL) values, lower minimal fluorescence (F0), and increased PSI oxidation and re-reduction rates, suggesting enhanced photoprotection. While green laminated shade netting was expected to provide the greatest benefit, no significant (p < 0.05) advantage was observed among shading treatments, indicating that overall shading, rather than spectral composition, played a dominant role. Intraspecific variation was evident, with plant group A responding more favourably to shading, while group B exhibited a decline in PSI efficiency with prolonged exposure to laminated shade netting. Chlorophyll content was higher in shaded plants, supporting improved light capture. The increase of the absorption flux per cross-section (ABS/CSm) confirmed efficient electron transport under shading, while unshaded plants showed increased energy dissipation (DI/CSm) as a photoprotective response. Overall, these findings demonstrate that moderate shading enhances photosynthetic efficiency in Lessertia frutescens and improves plant vitality. These insights contribute to refining shading strategies for improved cultivation and stress resilience.Master

Newar marriage and kinship in Kathmandu, Nepal
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. This thesis presents a descriptive and analytical study of Newar marriage and kinship in Kathmandu. Essentially, this is a study about caste and the role that it plays in Newar life, in particular, the way that caste is expressed through marriage patterns and kinship rituals. This study also shows that although the link between one's caste and one's traditional caste occupation is breaking down, one's caste identity is still maintained through one's choice of marriage partner and one's participation in kinship rituals which occur at the various levels of caste organization. Newar caste organizations are also undergoing a process of transformation. In addition to the traditional caste organizations, there are also new intercaste organizations which cater to the ritual needs of those in intercaste marriages. This recent phenomenon coincides with the professionalization of other caste organizations, which, in addition to performing their ritual duties, have also taken on the role of social and economic guardians to their caste members. It could be argued that although some forms of caste are no longer applicable, in other ways, caste in Newar society has never been stronger or more important. Despite the claim that intercaste marriages are on the rise, the data shows that the majority of Newars still practice caste endogamy. Membership into a caste organization - which is through the initiation ritual - is so important to Newar identity that intercaste couples have started their own caste organization to ensure that their offspring will officially be a part of a caste group. In sum, this study shows that despite the fact that caste is no longer recognized in the Nepalese constitution, caste is still the main vector of Newar identity, and this is seen most clearly through the analysis of Newar marriage and kinship.Funding was obtained from the Royal Scholarship of Thailand
