No full textThe background and genesis of Hubert du Plessis’s German and French songs
On 7 June 2002 the South African composer Hubert du Plessis turned 80. Among his 77 art songs there are (apart from songs in Afrikaans, Dutch and English) eleven on German texts and one on a French text. The aim of this article is to investigate the genesis of these German and French songs. Du Plessis was influenced by his second cousin, the Afrikaans poet Barend J. Toerien, who lived in the same residence as Du Plessis at the University of Stellenbosch where they studied in the early 1940s. Toerien introduced Du Plessis to the work of Rilke, of whose poetry Du Plessis later set to music “Herbst”. Du Plessis’s ten Morgenstern songs were inspired by a chance gift of a Morgenstern volume from Susanne Stark-Schwietering, a student in Grahamstown where Du Plessis taught at Rhodes University College (1944-1951). During his studies in London (1951-1954) Du Plessis also received a volume of Morgenstern poetry from Howard Ferguson in 1951. The choice of French verses from Solomon’s Song of Songs was influenced by the advice of Hilda de Wet (Stellenbosch, 1966). It is notable that Du Plessis’s main composition teachers, William Bell, Friedrich Hartmann and Alan Bush, had practically no influence on the choice of the texts of his German and French songs

No full textLe caractère et la carrière épiscopale respectifs de Pierre Denaut, évêque de Québec de 1797 à 1806, et de son successeur Joseph-Octave Plessis, expliquent en partie leurs façons différentes d’aborder les problèmes de l’Église catholique au début du 19e siècle. Ces différences d’attitude se révèlent dans les relations officielles entre l’évêque Denaut et le coadjuteur Plessis, relations rendues difficiles par la décision de Denaut de rester dans sa paroisse de Longueuil tandis que Plessis est à Québec, mais facilitées par l’amitié entre eux. Avec la mort de Denaut et l’accession de Plessis au siège épiscopal, l’Église passe de la résistance passive à la reconquête du terrain
Flight activity of the groundnut leafminer (Aproaerema modicella Deventer) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in the groundnut production areas of South Africa
No full textThe groundnut leafminer (GLM), Aproaerema modicella
(Deventer) is a pest of groundnut and soybean and also
attacks lucerne. No information exists on the flight patterns
of this invasive species that established in the groundnut
production area of South Africa since 2000. GLM flight
activity patterns were studied using pheromone traps at
the border of groundnut fields at four localities. Flight activity
coincided with the main production period of groundnut
crops with the highest number of moths generally recorded
between January and May. Timing of planting will therefore
largely affect both the severity and time of GLM infestation,
irrespective of locality and it should also be kept in mind
when flight activity and field infestation by GLM are investigated.
Number of moths captured with pheromone traps
as an indicator of subsequent larval incidence can in future
also be used to determine the optimum time for insecticide
applications. An integrated management strategy for GLM
should be developed which integrates a combination of
time of planting (cultural control), biological- and chemical
