South African English newspapers\u27 depiction of learner-on-teacher violence
This paper reports on findings from a qualitative content analysis on South African English newspapers’ depiction of learner-on-teacher violence, and the effects thereof on the victimised teachers’ private and professional lives, as well as teaching and learning. Lindner’s humiliation theory underpins the study theoretically. The author uses a relational lens to focus on the destructive, humiliating relationship between teachers and learners in schools where learner-on-teacher violence is problematic. SA Media is the databank, and the data source is 57 newspaper articles that report on the incidence of learner-on-teacher violence. The findings indicate that newspapers depict learner-on-teacher violence as the physical, verbal, sexual and psychological abuse and humiliation of teachers. The analysed newspapers highlight the physicality and humiliating nature of attacks against teachers. The study finds that the disintegration of teaching and learning and the degradation of teachers’ private and professional lives are serious negative effects of learner-on-teacher violence in schools where violence is rampant. An important and recurring discourse in the newspapers’ construction of teachers as disempowered, humiliated and vulnerable individuals is that learners’ rights in South Africa supersede teachers’ rights. The study highlights the important role newspapers play in informing the public, education and community leaders and policymakers about learner-on-teacher violence as a serious problem that must be addressed
International Comparative Perspectives on Religion and Education
This book scrutinises religion in education in ten countries. It reveals much about the tension between religion and education in secular countries, and the blending between religion and education in religious countries, such as Iran and Malaysia, as well as secular countries such as the Netherlands. It also shows the important role the church currently plays in education in developing countries, such as Tanzania
Die beeld van die opvoeder - 'n groep Opvoedkunde-studente se sieninge
The academic successes and failures of learners during their school years are closely linked to the quality of their educators. It is therefore necessary to determine what knowledge and skills the practitioners of this profession should have to effect such a tremendous influence on their clients' lives. A review of the literature serves as theoretical base for the empirical study. In the article I report on the content analysis of short essays of a group of Education students, in which they were required to either pay tribute to educators who played an important role during their school years or denounce educators who they felt should never have entered the profession. From the literature and the content analysis, it appeared that the nature of learner-education relations and the scope of an educator's academic and professional knowledge and skills determined whether a person was a good or unsatisfactory educator.

Die aard en omvang van bullebakkery in skole: strategieë vir die voorkoming van die probleem
English: It is a common misconception that bullying is part of the process of growing up.
Bullying, however, leads to violation of the victim’s human rights and has serious negative
consequences for his or her physical, emotional, social and educational wellbeing.
It is therefore imperative that ways and means be found to prevent bullying.
The aim and purpose of this article is to report on the experiences of a group of Free
State learners as victims, spectators and auditors of bullying. This will be done against
the background of a literature study. Cognisance will be taken of their strategies
concerning the prevention of bullying. The survey indicates that both direct and indirect
verbal bullying are a problem in Free State schools. Important elements in the
campaign against bullying include maintaining discipline; being conscious of the
nature and extent of bullying; establishing a culture of caring, and involvement on the
part of both learners and adults.
verslag te doen oor ’n groep Vrystaatse leerders se belewinge as slagoffers, toeskouers
Publisher's versio
The extent and causes of learner vandalism at schools
School vandalism has negative economic, psychological, and educational implications for education. On the other hand, well-cared for school facilities, furniture and equipment, as well as clean toilets, are conducive to a healthy teaching and learning environment. Because learners have the right to be taught in tidy, clean school buildings, the aim of this research was to investigate the perceptions of a group of educators regarding aspects of school vandalism. It was evident from the research that vandalism is a learned phenomenon in schools and adjoining residential areas. Learners, particularly boys between the ages of 14 and 19, are the most important vandals. However, it is clear that schools are regularly vandalised by herdsmen, gangsters, drop-outs, ex-learners, and learners from neighbouring schools. The research indicated that juridical, economic, drug and alcohol, as well as learner-related, problems are considered important causes of school vandalism. On the other hand, it was found that educator and school management practices are less important causes of learner vandalism.

A group of black educators' views on membership and objectives of teachers' unions.
The internationally recognised right of association is recognised in South Africa by the constitution and the Labour Relations Act. Each worker, including educators, has the right to participate in establishing a trade union and to join the trade union of his/her choice. However, some politicians and academics doubt whether the educator as active trade union member can be reconciled with the professional educator. The article reports, against the background of a brief literature review of trade unions in general and teachers' trade unions in particular, on an empirical study of a group of educators' reasons for trade union membership, as well as their participation in and views of teachers' unions. The study showed that the teachers' union members who participated in the study participated actively in trade union activities. It also appeared that educators joined trade unions for economic, professional, educational, political, social and psychological reasons, amongst others. Respondents regarded the role of teachers ' unions in education policy matters, professional development of educators, and improvement in the economic position of members as the most important objectives of teachers' unions.

School safety and combating crime: the views of a group of Free State learners and educators.
Statements by academics and newspaper reports on crime in schools have resulted in the majority of people believing that crime in schools is out of control. This may lead to a feeling of helplessness and a laissez-faire attitude. Research on school safety is therefore essential. An empirical investigation was launched among a group of Free State educators and learners, initially to determine how safe their schools were. Secondly, an attempt was made to determine to what extent respondents had been exposed to crime during the preceding twelve months, whether they had reported the crimes and, if not, why not. Thirdly, they were asked to suggest crime prevention strategies. The findings are presented against the background of a criminological perspective on juvenile delinquency and a literature review on the causes of crime and crime prevention strategies.
