Encapsulation of pancreatic islets for transplantation in diabetes: the untouchable islets
The aim of encapsulation of pancreatic islets is to transplant in the absence of immunosuppression. It is based on the principle that transplanted tissue is protected from the host immune system by an artificial membrane. Encapsulation allows for application of insulin-secreting cells of animal or other surrogate sources, to overcome human islet shortage. The advantages and pitfalls of the approaches developed so far are discussed and compared, together with some recent progress, in view of applicability in clinical islet transplantation
Design of a New Ship Propulsion System Fundamentals course
In this paper I describe the design of a new course about ship resistance and ship propulsion system fundamentals. The occasion for designing a new course on this topic was the re-design of the Maritime Technology Bachelor of Science programme at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Especially the alteration to another teaching methodology meant a new design was required for the course and led to the introduction of a Mean Value First Principle dynamic model of a ship propulsion system for voyage simulation. The integration of such a model in an educational environment is challenging. The results of the design effort are discussed in this paper by analysis of the models students developed during the first time the course ran and the feedback that was obtained from them.Accepted Author ManuscriptShip Design, Production and Operation
On the application of network theory in naval engineering: Generating network topologies
Network topology of technical systems (i.e. the way in which components of technical systems are connected to each other through connections like pipes, cables, shafts, etc.) in naval vessels is quickly fixed in current design methods. This means the vulnerability of these systems is also quickly fixed. Variation in network topology may lead to new, unknown topologies that have better survivability characteristics. Therefore a new approach to designing technical systems is explored in this paper. This approach applies mathematical network theory in a naval engineering context. Basic concepts of network theory are explained and then used to make automatic network topology generation possible. Preliminary results using a first version of a network topology generation algorithm are presented and discussed. Future work within the PhD research of which this network topology generation is one aspect is then described.Accepted Author Manuscript. Environment-friendly inland shipping: Dynamic modeling of propulsion systems for inland ships using different fuels and fuel cells
To meet possible future emission regulations for inland ships alternative propulsion systems with fuel cell technology and batteries are researched. A rather simple, yet efficient dynamic model is being developed to simulate four different propulsion system configurations with different fuel cells and different fuels. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Dimension prediction models of ship system components based on first principles
In this paper we describe a generic way of sizing main dimensions of primary equipment for marine applications. Contrary to a straight fit through a database the method tries to develop expressions in which, apart from the main specifications in terms of power and speed, the selection of the main machine parameters has an influence on the ultimate overall dimensions of the component. The result is a “rubber” design model that uses in an intelligent way the first principles underlying the design of machines and that can be used in preliminary design of complex maritime objects. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
