    Examining differences in internet use aspects among people with intellectual disabilities in Flanders

    To date, few studies have investigated within-group differences in internet use among people with intellectual disabilities (ID). Previous research on internet use among people with disabilities has compared the internet access and use of people with and without disabilities, has investigated general benefits and risks associated with internet use for people with ID, or has examined how their internet skills and use can be improved. The present study aims to examine whether differences can be found in varying aspects of internet access, use purposes, skills and use support among a group of people with ID. Face-to-face survey data were collected among 94 people with ID (57.4% men; Mage = 45.28, SDage = 12.20). Our study revealed that particularly younger people with ID have more access, use the internet for more different purposes, have more skills and report to be more supported when they encounter problems compared to older people with ID. We further found that employed persons with ID have higher skills than unemployed ones, and that people who rely less on professional caregivers have more skills than those who rely more on professional caregivers. Given these results, we suggest that people with ID should be considered as a heterogeneous group of internet users. Consequently, we recommend organizations and caregivers to differentiate when teaching or applying internet use among this population

    On the Feedback Control of Hitch Angle through Torque-Vectoring

    This paper describes a torque-vectoring (TV) algorithm for the control of the hitch angle of an articulated vehicle. The hitch angle control function prevents trailer oscillations and instability during extreme cornering maneuvers. The proposed control variable is a weighted combination of terms accounting for the yaw rate, sideslip angle and hitch angle of the articulated vehicle. The novel control variable formulation results in a single-input single-output (SISO) feedback controller. In the specific application a simple proportional integral (PI) controller with gain scheduling on vehicle velocity is developed. The TV system is implemented and experimentally tested on a fully electric vehicle with four on-board drivetrains, towing a single-axle passive trailer. Sinusoidal steer test results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the behavior of the articulated vehicle, and justify further research on the topic of hitch angle control through TV

    Trailer control through vehicle yaw moment control: theoretical analysis and experimental assessment

    This paper investigates a torque-vectoring formulation for the combined control of the yaw rate and hitch angle of an articulated vehicle through a direct yaw moment generated on the towing car. The formulation is based on a single-input single-output feedback control structure, in which the reference yaw rate for the car is modified when the incipient instability of the trailer is detected with a hitch angle sensor. The design of the hitch angle controller is described, including the gain scheduling as a function of vehicle speed. The controller performance is assessed by means of frequency domain and phase plane analyses, and compared with that of an industrial trailer sway mitigation algorithm. In addition, the novel control strategy is implemented in a high-fidelity articulated vehicle model for robustness assessment, and experimentally tested on an electric vehicle demonstrator with four on-board drivetrains, towing two different conventional single-axle trailers. The results show that: i) the torque-vectoring controller based only on the yaw rate of the car is not sufficient to mitigate trailer instability in extreme conditions; and ii) the proposed controller provides safe trailer behaviour during the comprehensive set of manoeuvres, thus justifying the additional hardware complexity associated with the hitch angle measurement

    Balancing stress and recovery in sports

    To reach elite level in sports, athletes have to start their intensive and time-consuming training at an early stage. The road to the top is a stressful one, not only due to the physiological stress of training, but also caused by psychological and social stress. In order to improve performance athletes continuously challenge their personal boundaries. This may lead to a local or general overload of the human body that results into injuries, illnesses and overtraining. Overtraining is characterized by an unexplained decrement in sport-specific performance and is often coupled with symptoms such as increased fatigue, poor concentration, disturbed mood, and altered eating and sleeping patterns. Full recovery may take months to years. Monitoring stress and recovery may help to optimize performance and prevent a local or general overload. Clinical measurements showed that mood state and hormonal responses to a double maximal exercise protocol provided valuable information to confirm the diagnosis of overtraining.

    Towards a viable business model for collaborative use of unlicensed frequency bands in densely populated areas

    The overwhelming commercial success of connected things and personal mobile devices is driving the dense and uncontrolled deployment of wireless networks using unlicensed frequency bands. This results in heavy congestion and interference, leading to considerable loss of network performance. The only sustainable solution is some form of collaboration between users. Not only does this require new technology to facilitate such collaboration, it also demands for new business models that accommodate new, collaboration facilitating roles. In this paper we propose a generic business model for sustainable spectrum sharing in unlicensed frequency band. It includes two new actors, the Spectrum Broker and the Wi-5 System Operator. The business model is tested against popular use cases, in dialogue with various European network operators. The results indicate that the model is applicable and viable.</p
