'Recreations for Leisure Hours': Popular Entertainment in Collins's Hide and Seek
No full textCollins’s Hide and Seek (1854), is a valuable contribution to the Victorian debate on popular entertainment, punctuated as it is by references to the circus, the music hall and the painting exhibition. Leisure appears to be a crucial issue for the author: himself a great entertainer and the father-to-be of the sensation novel, he aimed to gain access to the booming reading market of the 1850s-60s without giving up his literary ambitions. The detailed analysis of amusement he carries out in Hide and Seek is a significant step in the accomplishment of his objective, paving the way to the rise of sensation fiction, which, he seems to imply, was the recreation, both amusing and instructing, the Victorian cross-class audience was in need of

della scienza. The Elephant Man, pubblicato nel 1923 insieme ad altri
ricordi della sua professione medica, è il resoconto di tale incontro e si
configura come territorio privilegiato per indagare i rapporti tra medicina
e letteratura, non solo perché la narrazione, ancorché incentrata su un caso
clinico, si piega naturalmente al sentimentalismo e al sensazionalismo che
caratterizzano certa produzione letteraria vittoriana, ma anche perché si
presta a dimostrare come, all’epoca, il sapere scientifico non avesse completamente
medicalizzato il corpo anomalo e si ponesse in relazione dinamica
con idee e discorsi popolari, condividendone parzialmente visioni e
linguaggi

Full text linkAt the outbreak of the First World War, Charles Masterman, head of the War Propaganda Bureau, invited a number of leading British writers to support the national cause with their works. The essay analyses some of the short stories commissioned by the War Propaganda Bureau, whose aim was to secure morale, regulating the affects of the population, seen as «a mass of affective beings», through ideals such as honour and glory. According to Attridge, a work of art is «one that brings the other into the field of the same». He maintains that it reveals that «dimension that has to remain out of sight if we are to pursue our normal paths through life», encouraging the reader to question the accepted values and norms of the culture to which he/she belongs. Part of his/her response to the work is thus a feeling of «strangeness». On the contrary, the literature of propaganda appears to accomplish a different task, namely, to make the extraordinary familiar. In order to reassure the reader, who is con- cerned about his/her survival and the future of the nation, it highlights the connection and continuity between the exceptional war and the ordinary pre-war state, drawing on the literary tradition and resorting to common moral codes and shared notions of national identity
