    Manon de Boer

    No full text
The Candian debut of Brussels-based artist Manon de Boer presented film portraits of two women recalling their formative years in Paris in the 1970s. Sylvia Kristel – Paris (2003) depicts the star of the famed soft-core Emmanuelle films reminiscing about her past. Resonating Surfaces (2005) meanwhile, creates a picture of both Paris and São Paulo through the memories of Suely Rolnik, a psychoanalyst, translator and former lover of Gilles Deleuze. Departing from traditional narrative cinema’s reliance on images of women, de Boer creates complex, poetic portraits that privilege texture and the female voice – overlapping elements that keep picture, sound and text in a state of flux. Akin to the experimental novels of Marguerite Duras, de Boer circles around her subjects but never seeks to fix them. Characters are elusive, memory is flexible and bodily experience shapes subjectivity

Transient observations : the textualizing of St Helena through five hundred years of colonial discourse

    No full text
This thesis explores the textualizing of the South Atlantic island of St Helena (a British Overseas Territory) through an analysis of the relationship between colonizing practices and the changing representations of the island and its inhabitants in a range of colonial 'texts', including historiography, travel writing, government papers, creative writing, and the fine arts. Part I situates this thesis within a critical engagement with post-colonial theory and colonial discourse analysis primarily, as well as with the recent 'linguistic turn' in anthropology and history. In place of post-colonialism's rather monolithic approach to colonial experiences, I argue for a localised approach to colonisation, which takes greater account of colonial praxis and of the continuous re-negotiation and re-constitution of particular colonial situations. Part II focuses on a number of literary issues by reviewing St Helena's historiography and literature, and by investigating the range of narrative tropes employed (largely by travellers) in the textualizing of St Helena, in particular with respect to recurrent imaginings of the island in terms of an earthly Eden. Part III examines the nature of colonial 'possession' by tracing the island's gradual appropriation by the Portuguese, Dutch and English in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century and the settlement policies pursued by the English East India Company in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. Part IV provides an account of the changing perceptions, by visitors and colonial officials alike, of the character of the island's inhabitants (from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century) and assesses the influence that these perceptions have had on the administration of the island and the political status of its inhabitants (in the mid- to late twentieth century). Part V, the conclusion, reviews the principal arguments of my thesis by addressing the political implications of post-colonial theory and of my own research, while also indicating avenues for further research. A localised and detailed exploration of colonial discourse over a period of nearly five hundred years, and a close analysis of a consequently wide range of colonial 'texts', has confirmed that although colonising practices and representations are far from monolithic, in the case of St Helena their continuities are of as much significance as their discontinuities

    The Blind Viewer

After watching Peter Gidal’s Room Film 1973, Michael Snow commented: ‘Your film had to be worked at. I felt… as if it was made by a blind man. I felt that searching tentative quality, the quality of trying to see’ (1.). The desire to see anew, as if it was for the first time, a learning to unlearn (2.), is one of the most enduring aspects of Gidal’s film practice and theory. A body of material as rich with possibilities as unresolved questions, paradoxes and dead ends. And yet, at a time when artists’ moving image has too often become a sheer repository for discourse, a reinvestment in Gidal’s attentiveness to the ‘coming into presence’ of the film may shed light on what these images and sounds do, rather than say. The question remains: how is a critique of image-production enacted, instead of represented? Notes: (1.) Snow, Michael, September 1973, quoted by Peter Gidal, ‘Theory and Definition of Structural / Materialist Film’, Structural Film Anthology, London: BFI, 1978, p.17 (2.) In June 2009, a white rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) calf was photographed in a group of at least 50 dolphins in the southern Gulf of Guinea, 95 nauticol miles off the Gabon coast (01°45'S 007°29'E), West Africa. Reports of unusually pigmented cetaceans are infrequent and this record represents the first of an all-white rough-toothed dolphin. Furthermore, there is little documentation concerning rough-toothed dolphins and this note contributes to the knowledge of this species in tropical West African water

This work was carried out to measure the adaptability on the heart rate (HR), respiratory frequency (RF) and rectal temperature (RT) in Boer and Anglo-nubiana goats at Meio-Norte, Brazil. Fourteen male goats were used (7 = Boer and 7 = Anglo-nubiana) in the same conditions. In the same days and times were too collected the temperature and (TA) and relative humidity of the air (UR). The SNK test was used to compare the means. The results obtained to Bôer and Anglo-nubiana was, in dry period, HR (beats/minutes) = 79.3±16.1 and 97.0±18.3; RF (mov.min-1.) = 25.5±5.9 and 34.4±13.3; TR (oC) = 39.2±0.4 and 39.4±0.4. In rain period, in the same breed order HR = 75.1±6.9 and 82.5±6.0; RF (mov./min.-1) = 27.7±4.47 e 26.7±5.5; TR (oC) = 39.3±0,4 and 39.4±0,4. The TA, in oC, and UR, in %, were in the dry period 33.0±1.5 and 55.0±7.43; and in the rain period, 30.0±2.02 and 81.2±6,99. The Anglo-nubiana goats showed the highest HR, RF and RT relative to the Boer goats in the dry and in the rain periods that indicate the Boer goats are better adaptable in the hot stress conditions

    No full text

Meat production of goats has become an important livestock enterprise in several parts of the world. Nonetheless, energy and protein requirements of meat goats have not been defined thoroughly. The objective of this study was to determine energy and protein requirements for maintenance and growth and to develop equations to predict the chemical composition of body and carcass using chemical composition of body components of Boer and oSaanen crossbred, intact male kids. In the first trial, 34 Boer and oSaanen crossbred, intact male kids were used. The baseline group (BL) was comprised of seven randomly selected kids, averaging 21.2 l 0.36 kg of BW. An intermediate group consisted of six randomly selected kids that were slaughtered when they reached 28.2 l 0.39 kg BW. The remaining kids (n = 21) were allocated randomly to three levels of DMI (treatments: ad libitum and restricted to 30 or 60% of the ad libitum intake) within seven slaughter groups. A slaughter group consisted of one kid from each treatment and was slaughtered when the ad libitum treatment kid reached 35 kg BW. Individual body components were weighed, ground, mixed, and subsampled for chemical analyses. The calculated daily NEm requirement was 78.2 kcal/kg0.75 of empty BW (EBW). A value of 2.44 g of net protein/kg0.75 of EBW for daily maintenance was determined. Net energy and protein (NPg) requirements for growth ranged from 2.55 to 3.0 Mcal/kg of empty weight gain (EWG) and 178.8 to 185.2 g/kg of EWG for 20 and 35 kg of BW, respectively. The daily net requirement of macrominerals for maintenance was 32.3 mg of Ca; 30.8 mg of P; 1.31 mg of Mg; 8.41 of K and 5.14 mg of Na per kg of EBW. Net macrominerals requirements for growth ranged from 6.5 to 7.0 g of Ca; 5.3 to 5.4 g of P; 0.29 to 0.31 g of Mg; 0.67 to 0.62 g of Na and 1.18 to 1.05 g of K per kg of EWG.
