The intellectual structure of research into PPPS : a bibliometric analysis
Public-private partnerships (or PPPs) encompass a broad spectrum of public sector infrastructure and service initiatives. Recently, some scholars have undertaken literature review studies of the various definitions of the concept of PPPs and its research traditions, identifying several distinct PPP research approaches. This article aims to: (1) enhance the findings of these literature reviews; (2) identify the cited works and authors (intellectual structure) in the published research on PPPs; (3) define the subfields that constitute the intellectual structure of PPP research fields. The methodology is based on the bibliometric techniques of citation and author co-citation analysis applied to published research on PPPs included in the Social Science Citation Index
Category Spanning and the Paradox of Strategic Conventionality in the Italian Opera
While literature on categories has recently turned attention to how organizations can mitigate the “illegitimacy discount” (Zuckerman, 1999) of category spanning, most empirical studies have tested this effect in the context of a market-maker audience. This paper contributes to the scholarly debate by further unpacking the conditions in which a market-taker conservative audience can reward category spanning and the resulting hybrid products. By problematizing the relationship between degrees of categorical contrast and categorical features, we hypothesize that a conservative audience can positively reward organizations that blend the features of two high-contrast categories when the combined entity preserves the core features of the category that reflects conservative audience expectations while hybridizing peripheral attributes. Furthermore, we introduce the paradox of “strategic conventionality”: while producers strategically increase the conventionality (Durand & Kremp, 2016) of hybrid products to attract attention, external audiences penalize highly conventional hybrids based on assessments of perceived inauthenticity (Carroll & Wheaton, 2009). We develop our context- specific hypotheses in the Italian opera sector based on an original panel data of opera houses’ programming decisions
The intrinsic characteristics of the medical device sector, as well as the increasing role the latter is playing with regard to the health care policies, are leading to a strengthening of the device-related supply system and the adoption of a network-based approach that encompasses both the manufacturers and the institutional stakeholders accountable for the innovation, the competitiveness and the quality of the goods and services provided. Given the aforementioned framework, the current paper aims at analysing the relationship between industry providers and public purchasers with regard to the orthopaedics and rehabilitation medical device cluster. The overarching aim of the research is to promote systematic actions at the institutional level to foster the sustainable economic growth of the sector, vis a vis high qualitative standards of the health and social care assistance
Unitary Fermi superfluid near the critical temperature: thermodynamics and sound modes from elementary excitations
We compare recent experimental results [Science 375, 528 (2022)] of the
superfluid unitary Fermi gas near the critical temperature with a thermodynamic
model based on elementary excitations of the system. We find very good
agreement between experimental data and our theory for several quantities such
as first sound, second sound, and superfluid fraction. We also show that mode
mixing between first and second sound occurs. Finally, we characterize the
response amplitude to a density perturbation: close to the critical temperature
both first and second sound can be excited through a density perturbation,
whereas at lower temperatures only the first sound mode exhibits a significant
response.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review
Social Innovation in Arts & Culture: Social Cohesion in Contexts of Culture-led Place Rejuvenation
This report aims at presenting the evolution of the social innovation stream “social cohesion in
contexts of cultural-led place rejuvenation” (identified through the selection process carried
out in report D4.2) (Turrini et al., 2015) and the main characteristics and magnitude of
contribution to the stream of the most relevant organisations that operate within it. This
research topic is investigated in Italy, Spain, France and The Netherlands
Optical Variability of 16 Quasi Stellar Objects
The authors report long term broad band optical photometry of a sample of 16 QSOs, including three BL Lacertae objects. Using plates originally obtained for the Asiago Supernova Search, up to 20 years of observations are available. Through an analysis of the results and consideration of photometric errors, the authors concluded that 9 objects are variable, 6 not variable and 1 suspicious. Data of all variable objects have been searched for periodicity, using the Fourier analysis technique, but no definite evidence has been found
Responding to Professional Knowledge Disruptions of Unmitigable Uncertainty: The Role of Emotions, Practices, and Moral Duty among COVID-19 Physicians
Drawing on an in-depth study of physicians facing the Covid-19 pandemic in Italy in 2020, we advance theory on how professionals in their workplace respond to knowledge disruptions associated with complex societal challenges that undermine the adequacy of their knowledge base to solve professional problems. We show that, in the context of the uncertainty generated by the knowledge disruption and unable to mitigate it through typical knowledge-based strategies, professionals experience a trail of negative epistemic emotions linked to the immitigability of this uncertainty. Despite these negative epistemic emotions and motivated by a heightened sense of moral duty, professionals engage in service-oriented practices of collegial and humanistic work that depart from the knowledge-centric practices of their usual work. We detail how the repeated development of positive moral emotions when performing of such practices leads professionals to ultimately consolidate and embed service-oriented practices in their professional work. Our study contributes to the literature on professions and organizations by theorizing the distinctive category of knowledge disruptions of unmitigable uncertainty and by uncovering the micro-level dynamics and mechanisms that sustain professionals’ responses
