Shoulder Muscles Moment Arm Contribution to Glenohumerol Joint Motion and Stability
No full textThe objective of this chapter is to define further the clinical value of moment arms and provide a descriptive approach based on experimental investigation into the calculation of moment arm for the rotator cuff muscles spanning the glenohumeral joint during abduction. With the advent of imaging techniques quantifying the muscle torque capacity can be a reliable tool for clinical assessment of RC repairs as well as GH joint arthroplasty. Joint kinematics and muscle force estimation are essential for quantification of patient outcome and rehabilitation. Methods used in the calculation of moment arms usually referred to as the geometric approach and excursion method are directly related through principle of virtual work and moment equations where both require a center of rotation and a measureable distance to the line of action of the muscle force or simply the rate of change in the excursion of the muscle force length. In this chapter experimental data is provided for two muscles supraspinatus and subscapularis, respectively where a combination of a 3D model and digitized points along the tendons attachment and insertion surface area are used in the analysis.
Moment arm is usually a measure used when the actual force is not known or difficult to measure but the force vector and center of the joint rotation are measurable. Since the torque is indicative of moment which is the product of the force and the distance from the center of rotation, so changes in moment arms provide an insight into the power capacity produced by individual muscles and ligaments after rotator cuff repairs and ACL reconstruction.
This chapter shows how translation research from cadaveric testing to an actual clinical setting is feasible in the evaluation of the functional limitation of the shoulder joint movements during a prescribed therapeutic exercise.
The results of this shoulder joint can be extended to other human joints where soft tissues repairs, joints arthroplasty and complex pathologies need further simulation to optimize the prosthesis design, and clinical procedures needed for specific patients

Cette approche porte sur les trois aspects de l’indexation sémantique : (1) la détection des termes d’index qui consiste à retrouver l’ensemble des collocations, l’ensemble des termes simples et l’ensemble des termes orphelins. (2) la désambiguïsation des termes qui consiste à sélectionner le sens correct de chaque mot simple dans le document et (3) la pondération des termes, où nous avons proposé un nouveau schéma de pondération basé sur la similarité sémantique (plus le terme est relié sémantiquement aux autres termes du document plus il est important). Par la suite, nous avons intégré cette nouvelle approche à la plateforme de Terrier 3.5, formant ainsi Sem-Terrier, et ce, en ajoutant un module pour l’identification des termes d’index et leur désambiguïsation, et le nouveau modèle de pondération pour le calcul des scores
Simplex sigillum veri: Peano, Frege, and Peirce on the Primitives of Logic
No full textWe propose a reconstruction of the constellation of problems and philosophical positions on the nature and number of the primitives of logic in four authors of the nineteenth century logical scene: Peano, Padoa, Frege and Peirce. We argue that the proposed reconstruction forces us to recognize that it is in at least four different senses that a notation can be said to be simpler than another, and we trace the origins of these four senses in the writings of these authors. We conclude that Frege, and even more so Peirce, developed new notations not to make drawing logical conclusions easier but in order to answer the needs of logical analysis

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
