Ajaykumar's meta research concerns the engendering of new epistemologies in ontological art practice: investigating the contemporary pertinence and evolution of a hypothesis of 'dependent origination' beyond its original Buddhist cultural and religious significance, particularly with regard spectatorship. This research concerns investigating the notion of a hypothesis of ‚'non-anthropocentric being' that may emerge in a relational world, between body (spectator/artist), ostensible object and landscape ‚ togographical, social and cultural. This project seeks to analyse the contemporary trans-cultural relevance of the Japanese concept of ma, denoting space-time, emptiness-presence, and interval; and finding a methodology for re-conceiving it as an ‚'art experience', where apperceptive spectators are the only ‚'performers'. Ajaykumar devised foyer, lasting fifteen days, where the primary spectators were the people who worked in and frequented Riverside Studios London. The regular journeys made through its foyer were mediated by the creations of arcs of micro-gardens, where herbage grew and was allowed to eventually die
The Need to Study, Mimic, and Target Stem Cell Niches
Get PDFDespite important advances in tissue repair and regeneration over the past few decades, complete functional repair of damaged or diseased human tissues has remained elusive. Recent discoveries in stem cell niche molecular biology and biomaterials engineering may hold the key to true regeneration. Such efforts can be divided into three main approaches: (1) recruiting endogenous repair mechanisms in vivo, (2) administering cells in vivo, and (3) generating tissues/organs ex vivo. Central to these approaches is an understanding of stem cell niche molecules and signaling mechanisms, including cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. To better study these mechanisms, scientific research has focused on the creation of a synthetic or artificial niche, a two- or three-dimensional microenvironment, constituted by the integration of mechanical and chemical cues such as extracellular matrix molecules and growth factors. This book is an attempt to comprehensively review our current understanding of the biology of the stem cell niche. It covers the elements that regulate stem cell behavior and highlights a variety of tools and techniques available in engineering and materials science for modeling synthetic stem cell niches in vivo or enhancing and directing stem cell fate in vitro. Finally, it describes stem cell niche bioengineering strategies and current advances in each tissue type.</p
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Get PDFThis practice-based thesis is an interrogation of ‘being’, one not centred on the human being. It concerns a being that manifests through dynamic inter-relation between human and other entities and phenomena in the universe. It considers several interrelated questions, interrogating notions of 'relational being','non-anthropocentric being', 'the being of a space', ‘the space of being’. Ultimately,
one is considering the implications of relational being for ‘deep ecology’.
With regard ‘relational being’, key inter-related Buddhist ideas drive the thinking and practice: ‘relational origination’ (pratityasamutpada), and ‘emptiness’(shunyata). Furthermore at the heart of this particular history of technology is a discussion of the significance of zero. The Sanskrit term shunya, means both ‘zero’ and ‘empty’, and relates to shunyata.
There are several principal objectives. Firstly an analysis of perceived relational dynamics in Ellora’s rock-cut architecture, technology, and ontology. Secondly, scrutiny of apparent correspondence between Ellora’s Edifice Twenty-Nine and a contemporary Tantric shrine: the Water Temple, constructed in 1991. Thirdly, an examination of ideas in contemporary science and technology that engender reconsiderations of notions of ‘relational being’.
The primary practical outcomes are two films: relationship-place naka-ma and zero = every day? Both approach the question through phenomenological process, paralleling Ando’s conception of ‘architecture’ as an integrated and inter-acting entity of built edifice, wider landscape, and the spectatorship of persons who frequent it.
This research engenders ‘new knowledge’ in terms of: offering pluralistic, trans-national and trans-disciplinary insight on current thinking relating to art, architecture, technology, spectatorship, and ontological practice; evolving knowledge with regard interactions between body, humanly constructed entities, wider environments/ecologies; engendering new perspectives on considerations of cyberspace, Ellora, Ando, and the Water Temple; contributing to a counter thesis vis-à-vis the colonial project of objectification and ossification of the other
