    Asymmetric Nuclear Matter from extended Brueckner theory

    The properties of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter have been investigated in the framework of the extended Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation at zero temperature. Self-consistent calculations using the Argonne V-14 interaction are reported for several values of the asymmetry parameter beta = (N - Z)/A, ranging from symmetric nuclear matter to pure neutron matter. The binding energy per nucleon fulfills the beta(2) law in the whole asymmetry range. The symmetry energy is calculated for different densities and discussed in comparison with other predictions, At the saturation point it is in fairly good agreement with the empirical value. The present approximation, based on the Landau definition of quasiparticle energy, is investigated in terms of the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, which is proved to be fulfilled with a good accuracy at various asymmetries. The isospin dependence of the single-particle properties is discussed, including mean field, effective mass, and mean free path of neutrons and protons. The isospin effects in nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics are briefly discussed. [S0556-2813(99)03108-8]

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Decoupled power control with indepth analysis of single-phase electric springs

    Electric spring (ES) as a new effective way to solve the power quality issues caused by the uncertainty of wind and photovoltaic (PV) power, has the advantages of small volume, flexible configuration and low cost. Aiming at improving the dynamic responses of the existing power control for ES-2, a new control with in-depth analysis on the decoupling of the active and reactive powers is proposed in this paper. By introducing second order generalized integrator phase locked loop (SOGI-PLL) and fictitious-axis emulator (FAE) into the control algorithm, the virtual orthogonal voltage and current signals were constructed and the mathematic model of ES-2 in the dq axis synchronous rotating reference frame was established. Then, the control system consisting of three closed loops, namely active power loop, current loop and ES voltage loop, is arranged. Among the three loops, a damped proportional resonance (PR) controller is adopted in the ES voltage loop to ensure the accurate control of the output voltage of ES-2. Instead, traditional PI controllers are used for the current and power loops. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed decoupled power control is validated by both simulation and experimental results

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Performance improvement in single-phase electric spring control

    Two objectives can be pursued simultaneously with the δ control of a single-phase electric spring (ES). These objectives are the stabilization of the voltage across the critical load (CL) of a power system, and the achievement of a specific functionality similar to the pure compensation of reactive power or the correction of the power factor. However, existing control systems implementing the δ control do not cope with non-ideal operating conditions, such as line voltage distortions, and exhibit a somewhat sluggish regulation of the CL voltage. In an effort to improve both the steady-state and transient performances of an ES power system, this paper proposes implementing the δ control by means of a control system built up on the repetitive control and assisted by state feedback with pole assignment. This paper starts by analyzing the dynamics of an ES power system in terms of its poles and zeros. After that, a reduced second-order model of the dynamics is formulated to avoid a notch filter in the pole assignment. A repetitive control for an ES power system is then designed to meet the two above mentioned objectives. Experimental tests carried out on a laboratory setup demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system in significantly improving the ES power system performance, while reaching the two objectives. In particular, the tests outline the large mitigation of harmonics in the CL voltage under line voltage distortions and its fast stabilization action

    Hierarchical control with fast primary control for multiple single-phase electric springs

    An electric spring (ES) is a new power compensation device which becomes useful for the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. However, when the grid contains two or more ESs connected at different nodes, a voltage drop occurs between the nodes due to the line impedance. Therefore, the voltage of the ES-stabilized nodes cannot be set at the same reference (e.g., 220 V), otherwise one or more ESs break away because of the voltage windup. In this paper, a hierarchical control of multiple ESs tied to a microgrid is proposed to account for the line voltage drop. The primary control relies on the power decoupling control; it is designed for islanded operation of the microgrid, which improves the dynamics of both the voltage and frequency regulation. The secondary control relies on the droop control; it is introduced to coordinate the operation of the ESs by modifying the reference voltage of each ES dynamically. Advantages and disadvantages of the proposed hierarchical control are analyzed together with the explanations of the algorithms developed for its realization. At last, effectiveness of the arranged control system is validated by simulations on the MATLAB/Simulink platform

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
