Numerical and Experimental Investigation of Aluminum/CFRP Hybrid Tubes with Rubber-like Interlayer

In the automotive, aerospace, printing, and sports industries, the development of hybrid CFRP-metal components is becoming increasingly important and used. The coupling of metal with CFRP, in axial symmetric components, results in reduced production costs and an increase in mechanical properties such as bending, torsional stiffness, mass reduction, and critical speed, when compared to the single material-built ones. The challenge for engineers is to design hybrid co-cured tubes with external metal layers, which avoid possible detachments and delaminations due to the mismatching coefficients of thermal expansion of the two materials. In this work, residual thermal stresses and strain have been studied with numerical models based on Finite Element Method (FEM) and compared with experimental tests. The FEM model allowed for the investigation of the influence of length, diameters, thickness and interface layer material on residual thermal stress peaks near the free edges zone. To reduce the risk of premature failure, the interleaving of a rubber-like layer is proposed and experimentally validated

Harvesting Methods Directed at Biomass Crops Being Dried within the Field.

The increasing energy consumption and the concentration of energy demand are the main causes of the energy emergency. Agriculture may gain an important role through biomass production and valorization of livestock and agricultural residues for the development of renewable residues. This paper aims to evaluate the harvesting process and the energy sustainability of the direct combustion chain of Sorghum bicolor, a yearly crop that can achieve high biomass yields and can be easily introduced in the cropping system of the Pianura Padana, in Italy. Two different harvesting times were investigated, in both tests two different harvesting chains were evaluated. The results show that the proposed harvesting systems are sustainable from an energetic point of view and they allow to store the harvested biomass with a water content reasonably low

MABS validation through repeated execution and data mining analysis

Agent Based Modelling is the most interesting and advanced approach for simulating a complex system: in a social context, the single parts and the whole are often very hard to describe in detail. Besides, there are agent based formalisms which allow to study the emergency of social behaviour with the creation and study of models, known as artificial societies. Thanks to the ever increasing computational power, it's been possible to use such models to create software, based on intelligent agents, which aggregate behaviour is complex and difficult to predict, and can be used in open and distributed systems. Data mining is born in the last decades in order to help users in finding useful knowledge from the otherwise overwhelming amount of data available nowadays from the web and the data collected every day by companies. Data Mining techniques can therefore be the keystone to reveal non-trivial knowledge expressed by the initial assumption used to build the micro-level of the model and the structure of the society of agents that emerged from the simulation

Vibration energy harvesting using electrospun nanofibrous PVdF-TrFE

    No full text
This work is focused on the study of the electromechanical response of fibrous materials produced by means of electrospinning. Such structures are considered an emerging technology for energy harvesting. In particular, PVdF-TrFe co-polymer nanofibers were electrospun and subjected to mechanical vibrations produced by an eccentric shaft. Experimental results showed that the specific electric response to mechanical vibrations, in the frequency range from 15 Hz to 37 Hz, is very high. Moreover, frequency response well follows the vibration source. Cost reduction and a simpler manufacturing technique represent other advantages of the electrospinning process compared to conventional production technologies
