Lo sviluppo di comunità nelle città in transizione. Il caso di studio di Monteveglio.
Transition Towns is an international movement developing a systemic approach to inspire concrete actions, organized by citizens, from a bottom-up ethos (Hopkins, 2009). However, the movement has attracted little research and there appears to be no research using qualitative methods and a social and community psychology perspective. The Transition movement has the potential to have long-term effects in terms of revitalizing local economy, enhancing human relations and improving the quality of life of citizens, so it is vital that it is grounded in robust, interdisciplinary and scientifically informed conceptual frameworks (Haxeltine and Seyfang, 2009) like the research on new communities (Zani, 2005).\ud
Monteveglio is the first and the only town in Italy which has implemented transition principles in an official institutional document: resolution n. 92/2009. Using the case study approach (Yin, 2009) we aim to understand the Monteveglio community changes and if they can be attributed to the transition process. Considering the history of Monteveglio and its political-economical context within the wider global framework, and doing so through the voices of the community, is an innovative approach to the issue both thematically and methodologically.\ud
The main assumption of social psychology is that human behavior is the result of personality and context: people cannot be studied independently from the context they live in (Lewin, 1951). So, in order to understand the history of Monteveglio and the role of Transition in it, we listened to its witnesses by conducting semi-structured interviews, examining the documentation and doing participant observation. Using these multiple sources of evidence, triangulating data and maintaining a chain of evidence, we developed converging lines of inquiry, pointing out the connection of community trust and trade (McMillan & Chavis, 1986; Arcidiacono, 2002) as main factors of development.\ud
The Transition Towns movement endorses a holistic and systemic approach (involving all the aspects of human life) in order to lead to social change. So, our study on Transition calls for support from different subjects and to bridge the gaps between them. Thus, we developed theoretical propositions from different disciplines forming a broad theoretical background. Therefore, philosophical reflection (Latouche, 2010) on environmental ethics (Shiva, 2002) is necessary to go beyond the anthropocentrism, as permaculture claims (Holmgren, 2010). This involves the economy too, whose search for new wellness indexes is still wide open (Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress, Stiglitz, Sen, & Fitoussi, 2009; Sen, 2010), as human wellbeing is a much more fleeting concept.\ud
Crossing philosophy, economy and social psychology, with a transdisciplinary approach (Nicolescu, 2002; Morin, 2001), we obtained an output which is something different from the sum of the inputs.\ud
Finally, we discussed with the participants the meanings we gathered in order to give them feedback. Aware of the limits of present research and of the potentials for further research, we proposed an empowered community eager to plan future steps through democratic processes and active citizenship. From a theoretical perspective, we suggested implementing transition using a participatory action-research frame, to promote enhanced communication and continued collaboration
Statactivism and Critical Community Psychology:using statistical activism to resist injustice in the NHS and Higher Education
Statactivism has been articulated as a militant use of figures whereby previous representations of reality can be challenged and contested. A major aim of those who use statactivism is to subvert problematic models of social accountability. This chapter focuses on two such projects carried out in recent years. The Brighton Citizens’ Health Services Survey (BCHSS) was developed to explore and potentially challenge how knowledge is used and by whom in the production of local health commissioning institutions and relations. The National Senior Management Survey was a survey to move the gaze from the narrow metrics of Higher Education (HE) staff performance to the senior management teams who set the conditions through which staff performance becomes possible via a national league table of senior management teams. This chapter provides an account of the projects, considers the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of using statactivism in the content of challenging public sector marketisation, and considers the range of controversies that arose as a result of the projects. It explores the way that research straddling the boundary between academic inquiry and political activism speaks to the many issues that are prevalent in the changing HE and Health sectors
Seksualność, metafora i różnice kulturowe na przykładzie Zdobyczy Emila Zoli i jej polskiego tłumaczenia
In the literature of the 19th century, sexuality may be painted only in an indirect way, through allusions or metaphors. In Émile Zola’s La Curée, plants in a greenhouse express and symbolize the character’s desire. However, the force of the original image is completely lost in the Polish translation, made in the 1950s. Being a product of the Communist period, this text doesn’t take into consideration the cultural aspect of the process of translation. An attempt to imitate the lexical and syntactic structure is made at the cost of pictorial description, characteristic of Zola’s prose. Therefore, the most beautiful fragments of French novel remain nearly unknown to polish readers.W dziewiętnastowiecznej literaturze seksualność może być przedstawiona tylko w sposób pośredni – poprzez aluzje i metafory. W Zdobyczy Emila Zoli rośliny w szklarni wyrażają i symbolizują pragnienia postaci.
Art is considered by Emile Zola as one of the crucial values, as well in his life as in his work. It appears there in many different ways: practical (collecting paintings, friendship with artists) and theoretic (critical writings on art). One of the consequences of the author’s passion for art are literary characters of male and female painters in several novels of his Rougon-Macquart series and some of his short stories. The paper focuses on a few characters of women painters, taking into consideration Zola’s opinion about female creation, its position and its value compared to the work of men. Christine Hallegrain from The Masterpiece, Clotilde Rougon from Doctor Pascal and Mrs Sourdis from an eponymic short story are used to prove that even the most gifted woman is not able to achieve the level of a male performance, as the value of the genuine art consists of the very element of male genius. This is why women painters can never be considered as artists, they are always just artisans. Artykuł analizuje kilka postaci kobiet-malarek w kontekście poglądów Zoli na twórczość kobiecą, jej pozycję i wartość w porównaniu do twórczości mężczyzn.

Improving reliability of live/dead cell counting through automated image mosaicing
Cell counting is one of the basic needs of most biological experiments. Numerous methods and systems have been studied to improve the reliability of counting. However, at present, manual cell counting performed with a hemocytometer still represents the gold standard, despite several problems limiting reproducibility and repeatability of the counts and, in the end, compromising their reliability
in general. We present our own approach based on image processing techniques to improve counting reliability. In particular, we introduce GridMos, a fully-automated mosaicing method to obtain a mosaic representing the entire hemocytometer's grid. In addition to offering more significant statistics, the mosaic "freezes" the culture status, thus permitting analysis by more than one operator. Furthermore, the mosaic achieved can thus be tagged, thus markedly improving counting reliability. The experiments performed confirm the improvements brought about by the proposed counting approach in terms of both reproducibility and repeatability
Richardson, Barbauld, and the construction of an early modern fan club
MPhilMuch has been written about the life and long works of the eighteenth century epistolary novelist, Samuel Richardson, but the prospect of his position as the first celebrity novelist – responsible for courting his own fame as well as initiating his own fan club – has largely been ignored. The body of manuscripts housed at the National Art Library in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London provides the modern scholar with evidence of the skeletal beginnings of an early fan club. This thesis aims to show how these manuscripts were turned into a saleable commodity by the publisher and entrepreneur Richard Phillips, while under the guiding hand of another, slightly later, literary celebrity, Anna Laetitia Barbauld. In order to restore Richardson’s reputation amongst a new nineteenth century audience, Barbauld was required to construct her own idea of him as an eighteenth century celebrity author, and in doing so the insecurities of a self-professed, apparently diffident man, are revealed. Barbauld’s capacious, but heavily edited selection of letters is analyzed in this thesis, providing ample evidence that Richardson’s correspondents were more than just eager letter writers. By using Barbauld’s biography of Richardson this thesis aims to show how she manipulates the genre of life writing in her construction of him.
This thesis offers an alternative reading of how the Richardson manuscripts are viewed, redefining them as not simply a collection of letters, but as a collective entity, deliberately selected and archived as evidence of an early modern fan club, and its celebrity managing director
