    One of the problems with the psychological measurement of religion and spirituality is that most scales reflect only Christian and Western religious orientations. The aim of this study is to adapt the Assessment of Spirituality and Religious Sentiments scale (ASPIRES), developed by Piedmont (2004a), for spanish speaking populations in order to respond to these problems in an incidental, non probabilistic sample composed of university students from the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (N = 336). Confirmatory factor analysis indicates that the model proposed by the author provides a good fit to the data, so its use is recommended in the local context. It is suggested that future studies explore psychometric properties of ASPIRES in different populations (e. g. religious), so as to contribute to the spread and representativeness of the results of this study. At the same time, it is observed that spirituality is ought to be considered a potential sixth major dimension of personality.Uno de los problemas que han presentado las técnicas de evaluación de la religiosidad y la espiritualidad en Psicología radica en que la mayoría solamente reflejan las orientaciones cristianas y occidentales. El objetivo de este estudio consiste en adaptar al español la Escala de Evaluación de Espiritualidad y Sentimientos Religiosos (Assessment of Spirituality and Religious Sentiments scale [ASPIRES]), desarrollada por Piedmont (2004) para responder a estos inconvenientes, en una muestra no probabilística incidental compuesta por estudiantes universitarios de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires (N=336).     Complex scale-free networks with tunable power-law exponent and clustering

Copyright @ 2013 Elsevier B.V.We introduce a network evolution process motivated by the network of citations in the scientific literature. In each iteration of the process a node is born and directed links are created from the new node to a set of target nodes already in the network. This set includes mm “ambassador” nodes and ll of each ambassador’s descendants where mm and ll are random variables selected from any choice of distributions plpl and qmqm. The process mimics the tendency of authors to cite varying numbers of papers included in the bibliographies of the other papers they cite. We show that the degree distributions of the networks generated after a large number of iterations are scale-free and derive an expression for the power-law exponent. In a particular case of the model where the number of ambassadors is always the constant mm and the number of selected descendants from each ambassador is the constant ll, the power-law exponent is (2l+1)/l(2l+1)/l. For this example we derive expressions for the degree distribution and clustering coefficient in terms of ll and mm. We conclude that the proposed model can be tuned to have the same power law exponent and clustering coefficient of a broad range of the scale-free distributions that have been studied empirically.EPSR

    Influence of collisional dephasing processes on superfluorescence

    We present a quantum-mechanical treatment of the influence of collisional dephasing processes on the statistical properties of superfluorescence (SF). The theory, which treats nonlinear propagation effects as well as quantum noise, shows how the nature of the cooperative emission process changes from that of SF to that of amplified spontaneous emission as the collisional dephasing rate is varied. The predictions of how the SF delay time varies with the collisional dephasing rate are in good agreement with the results of a recent experiment [M. S. Malcuit, J. J. Maki, D. J. Simkin, and R. W. Boyd, Phys. Rev. Lett. 59, 1189 (1987)]

    Galaxy and mass assembly (GAMA) : AUTOZ spectral redshift measurements, confidence and errors

    The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey has obtained spectra of over 230 000 targets using the Anglo-Australian Telescope. To homogenize the redshift measurements and improve the reliability, a fully automatic redshift code was developed (AUTOZ). The measurements were made using a cross-correlation method for both the absorption-and the emission-line spectra. Large deviations in the high-pass-filtered spectra are partially clipped in order to be robust against uncorrected artefacts and to reduce the weight given to single-line matches. A single figure of merit (FOM) was developed that puts all template matches on to a similar confidence scale. The redshift confidence as a function of the FOM was fitted with a tanh function using a maximum likelihood method applied to repeat observations of targets. The method could be adapted to provide robust automatic redshifts for other large galaxy redshift surveys. For the GAMA survey, there was a substantial improvement in the reliability of assigned redshifts and in the lowering of redshift uncertainties with a median velocity uncertainty of 33 kms-1.Peer reviewe

    A study of early indication citation metrics

    Research outputs are growing in number and frequency, assisted by a greater number of publication mediums and platforms via which material can be disseminated. At the same time, the requirement to find acceptable, timely, objective measurements of research "quality" has become more important. Historically, citations have been used as an independent indication of the significance of scholarly material. However, citations are very slow to accrue since they can only be made by subsequently published material. This enforces a delay of a number of years before the citation impact of a publication can be accurately judged. By contrast, each new citation establishes a large number of co-citation relationships between that publication and older material whose citation impact is already well established. By taking advantage of this co-citation property, this thesis investigates the possibility of developing a metric that can provide an earlier indicator of a publication's citation impact. This thesis proposes a new family of cocitation based impact measures, describes a system to evaluate their effectiveness against a large citation database, and justifies the results of this evaluation against an analysis of a diverse range of research metric

    The Design, Development, And Evaluation Of Database Projects In Accounting Classes

    This paper describes a comprehensive database term project and several ideas that instructors can use to facilitate good projects and streamline the grading process.  The author tested the effectiveness of this assignment with an end-of-semester student survey, a comparison of group-versus-individual project performance, and an examination of his end-of-semester course evaluations.  His analyses suggest that term projects are an effective way to help students learn database concepts, and therefore should be included among the “best practices” associated with teaching database subjects
