An update on intensional logic and two-sorted type theory
By Gallin’s (1975) translation *, Montague’s (1970b) intensional type logic can be construed as a sublanguage of two-sorted type theory. Though Gallin’s * is largely reversible (Zimmermann, 1989), this only holds for the truly higher-order standard semantics of full functional domains, not for Gallin’s first-orderly generalised semantics
Formal foundations for semantic theories of nominalisation
This paper develops the formal foundations of semantic theories dealing with various kinds of nominalisations. It introduces a combination of an event-calculus with a type-free theory which allows a compositional description to be given of such phenomena like Vendler's distinction between perfect and imperfect nominals, iteration of gerunds and Cresswell's notorious non-urrival of'the train examples. Moreover, the approach argued for in this paper allows a semantic explanation to be given for a wide range of grammatical observations such as the behaviour of certain tpes of nominals with respect to their verbal contexts or the distribution of negation in nominals
Context Dependence
Linguistic expressions frequently make reference to the situation in which they are uttered.
In fact, there are expressions whose whole point of use is to relate to their context of utterance. It is such expressions that this article is primarily about. However, rather than presenting the richness of pertinent phenomena (cf. Anderson & Keenan 1985), it concentrates on the theoretical tools provided by the (standard) two-dimensional analysis of context dependence, essentially originating with Kaplan (1989)--with a little help from Stalnaker (1978) and Lewis (1979a, 1980), and various predecessors including Kamp (1971) and Vlach (1973). The current article overlaps in content with the account in Zimmermann (1991), which is however much broader (and at times deeper)
Unnatural history
Opening concurrently these two exhibitions were a major retrospective including 54 pieces of work many of the pieces were borrowed back from private collections in Germany for the duration of the shows
