Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Enhancement of resonant absorption through excitation of SPR
In this experiment the absorption of the laser radiation impinging on polymeric films with Au nanoparticles implanted in surface was studied. By varying the polarization and the incidence angle of the laser radiation on target, the role in the laser absorption of both excitation of surface plasmons and excitation of electronic plasma waves at critical density through resonant absorption was highlighted. In conditions of p-polarized laser irradiations at 1015W/cm2 intensity, resonant absorption can be induced in films enhancing proton and ion acceleration. Plasma on-line diagnostics is based on SiC detectors. Measurements of kinetic energy of accelerated ions indicate a significant increment using p-polarized laser light with respect to no-polarized light irradiation
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
New fluorescent-labelled nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization and interactions with cysteine and homocysteine to evaluate their stability in aqueous solution
Fluorescent-labelled nanoparticles conjugate the SPR of nanomaterials as well as the fluorescence properties of the capping dye. In this work, we report a study on the synthesis of fluorescent l-tyrosine (l-Tyr) and fluorescein (Fluo)-capped silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) carried out by a fine-tuning of the analytical concentration of the reagents. The AgNPs have been characterized by TEM, UV–Vis, ATR–FTIR, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and DLS. The adsorption of cysteine and homocysteine on the surface of the nanoparticles has been studied to evaluate their overall evolution in solution and their possible interactions with more complex systems, such as proteins. Opposed to homocysteine, cysteine induces aggregation either of tyrosine- and fluorescein-capped nanoparticles, which are therefore promising systems for the discrimination of biothiols. Furthermore, tyrosine-capped AgNPs, in spite of the better coordinating characteristics of this amino acid with respect to fluorescein, show aggregation abilities with cysteine greater than the fluorescein-capped ones that are unexpectedly more stable and thus less prone to aggregation phenomena
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Laser crystallization of amorphous TiO2 on polymer
The deposition of crystalline TiO2 on polymers can boost its use in a large plethora of applications. In this work, we deposited, through the low-temperature atomic layer deposition (LT-ALD) technique, a thin layer of amor-phous TiO2 on polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA), and afterwards, we induced a phase transition from amor-phous to crystalline anatase by pulsed UV-laser irradiation. A pulsed UV laser with a low penetration length was used to avoid the heating and damaging of the polymeric substrate. The diffusion of the heat and the temperature behaviour were simulated and discussed. We studied experimentally the effect of the laser fluence and pulse number on the amorphous-crystal transition. We observed the presence of two thresholds for the formation of the crystalline phase: on the fluence and the number of laser shots. Moreover, widening of pre-existing cracks is observed, as soon as fluence and the number of pulses increase. To improve further the quality of the deposited layer, we introduced a ZnO interlayer between TiO2 and the PMMA substrate. The effect of this interlayer was also discussed. Lastly, wettability, as a measure of the overall quality of the layer, was measured and interpreted by using the Cassie model

They can be employed to enhance the proton and ion accel- eration from the laser-generated plasma in TNSA regime. In conditions of ‘‘p’’ polarized laser irradiations at 1015 W/cm2 intensity, in these films can be induced resonant absorption due to plasma wave excita- tion. Plasma on-line diagnostics is based on SiC detectors, Thomson spectrometry and X-ray streak cam- era imaging. Measurements of kinetic energy of accelerated ions indicate a significant increment using polymer targets containing gold nanoparticles and ‘‘p’’ polarized laser light with respect to pure polymers and unpolarized light irradiation
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
