    No full text
Microwave hydrodiffusion and gravity (MHG) technique is an attempt towards development of green extraction, as this environment friendly technique has completely eliminated the use of organic solvents. After describing the effectiveness of microwave radiations in extraction field in the first part of this manuscript, we have optimized this noval extraction method to get antioxidants rich extract. Along with studying the temperature distributions in different parts of plant material under the effect of microwave irradiations, we have analyzed the influence of microwaves in enhancing the antioxidant activity of extracts by using different tests. We have got the promising results concerning about the antioxidant rich extracts of different onion varieties and sea buckthorn in generalization step against the conventional solvent extracts. The application of vacuum system in this extraction system helped in restraining the limitations like dry extract yield and flavonol contents. Incomparison to traditional and recent extraction systems, the MHG extracts doesn’t require any filtration and purification steps as it works in absence of any solvent and water and are highly recommended for direct application in industrial productsL'hydrodiffusion générée par micro-ondes est une nouvelle technique d'extraction mise au point au sein de l'Université d'Avignon et des Pays de Vaucluse.

Alcohol consumption and peer pressure are two factors that are known to coincide. According to National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the first six weeks of freshman year are critical for new students to pick up habits of binge drinking. Students attending colleges where there is a big influence from college athletics or Greek life tend to drink more. As a Muslim Pacific student and one who has been a part of many different organizations on campus, including Greek Life, I began to wonder how the statistics of peer pressure and alcohol consumption would differ between different populations of students. For my research project I formulated the following research question “Does an American college setting influence the alcohol consumption of young Muslims today?” With thirteen percent of the student body in Greek life and with eighteen Division 1 sports, Pacific is a “typical college campus” and the stage for my project. After conducting my study I found that there is correlation between pressure from different groups of students and their rate of alcohol consumption but more data collection will strengthen these results

The study engaged six secondary chemistry teachers in analysis of text and visuals of some selected topics of chemical bonding and acids and bases in Sindh Textbook Board’s grade nine chemistry textbook. The purpose of analysis was to explore gaps in the selected text and visuals. Along with analysis teachers’ views about improvement of the selected text and visuals were also collected. Furthermore, the study explored students’ difficulties with the selected text and visuals. The study used qualitative exploratory study design. The data collection tools used were questionnaires and focus group interviews. Separate questionnaires for teachers and students were developed by the researcher. The study engaged six chemistry teachers from four different schools of Karachi (three government and one private) and twelve grade nine students from another government girls’ high school of Karachi. The major findings from teachers revealed that some text of the selected concepts in the textbook lacked adequate explanation. These concepts are: (a) introduction to chemical bond formation (b) electrostatic nature of covalent bond (c) development of charge on ions (d) limitations of Arrhenius and Lowery-Bronsted models of acids & bases (e) some scientific terms like delocalization, concept of litmus etc. The study also found that the explanation of the selected concepts given in text lacked inclusion of students’ previous knowledge and analogies. It was also discovered during the study that absence of sub-microscopic level and macroscopic level diagrams about given chemical reactions of acids and bases made the concept difficult for the students. Students were also found struggling with dot and cross diagrams and high use of scientific language in text. The study recommends textbooks writers to include the important information and explanations of the concepts in the text that has been found missing during this study. Moreover, it is also recommended to textbook writers that incorporation of students’ previous knowledge, analogies, macroscopic and sub-microscopic level visuals about chemical equations is made in the text. Similarly, textbook writers are recommended to use simple language in text for explaining chemical concepts rather than using a lot of scientific terms. Furthermore, teachers are recommended to provide that important content to students during teaching which is missing in textbook

This small-scale action research explored the possibilities of using poetry for teaching English as second language. The study was based on the rationale that literature can be used as a resource for enhancing language development of students in our context. The assumptions were that poetry would stimulate students\u27 interest and would create opportunities of using and learning language. The study was conducted in a secondary classroom of a private English medium school in Karachi, Pakistan. The action research studied the existing teaching practices of English language as well as the problems faced by teachers and students in teaching and learning English and students\u27 language needs. The action was implemented in two cycles consisting of reconnaissance, planning, implementation, and reflection. Planning and implementation was in response to emerging needs and issues from each action. The data was collected through interviews, discussions with teacher and students and was analyzed after each reflection and action. The study reports some possible strategies of teaching poetry for language development. It also discusses some key findings such as that students\u27 interest in poetry can be stimulated by providing relevant and appropriate poems and by enabling students to articulate their own understandings. Furthermore, it provides multiple opportunities to the students for enhance their language skills and meaningful contexts for using the language. The study concludes by presenting my key learning as a teacher, teacher educator and an action researcher. It ends by suggesting some recommendations for schools and further research

China’s Soft Power: Effective International Media Presence from Chi-Fast to Chi-Film

Although many scholars have highlighted China’s soft power diplomacy and its dimensions, this paper argues that China has strong soft power resources but does not have an effective international media presence to sell its story. Moreover, China lacks a global presence which brands like McDonalds, KFC, and Hollywood represent in the form of a strong American economy, culture, and history. Therefore, this paper suggests that China can enhance its soft power by setting up fast food chains with Chinese characteristics and Chinese film productions in other regions in general and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries in particular. &nbsp

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
