Spin-flip Raman spectroscopy of ZnCdSe-based heterostructures

    Get PDF
This thesis presents the results of the study of ZnCdSe-based heterostructures of two systems, namely bulk single-phase cubic ZnCdSe epilayers with Cd content varying from 0 to 100 percent and ZnCdSe/Zn(S)Se quantum wells. In the latter system increased attention has been paid to the special case of submonolayer structures. The main tool of the study, spin-flip Raman spectroscopy, enabled observation of sharp spectral features related to the spin transitions of different excitations of these systems. The analysis of the experimental data allowed determination of the nature of these excitations as well as their parameters, leading thus to a better understanding of the properties of the systems studied. З. The urgency of finding the optimal (or, at least, more or less acceptable) balancebetween individual and collective human rights is increasing in the modern world every day, first of all, given the globalization processes in general and the strong migration crisis in particular. The purpose of the article is the philosophical-legal and the general theoretical analysis of the nature of collective rights and their relation with individual rights through the prism of two dichotomies: nominalism and realism, on the one hand, liberalism and communitarianism on the other. It is emphasized that the understanding of the social nature of collective rights vs a kind of "litmus test", which makes it possible to mark the initial research and political-legal positions of a particular author on one of the defining lines for defining the modern philosophy of law. On the one side of this line are adherents of the postulates of liberalism and predominantly correlated varieties of philosophical and legal nominalism, whereas on the other side are apologists of communist ideas and, accordingly, followers of a realistic direction in the philosophy of law. This dividing line is, to some extent, conditional. In accordance with the terminology of international public law, we can speak of delimitation rather than demarcation. After all, firstly, as is known, practically there is no "sterilly pure", without the impurities of other ideological and philosophical trends, liberals or communitarians, as well as nominalists or realists. Indeed, human rights researchers themselves are not as often self-identifiable by explicitly declaring their initial methodological settings. Secondly, within the above-mentioned philosophical currents – in the end, like any other – there are, so to speak, intermediate variants, which, often not without certain reasons, can claim or even de facto claim the status of some "the golden mean" between political, legal and / or epistemological extremes (let us remember, respectively, "liberal communitarianism" and "conceptualism")

All authors have read and agreed to the published version of the manuscript.Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic, complex multi-organ illness characterized by unexplained debilitating fatigue and post-exertional malaise (PEM), which is defined as a worsening of symptoms following even minor physical or mental exertion. Our study aimed to evaluate transcriptomic changes in ME/CFS female patients undergoing an exercise challenge intended to precipitate PEM. Our time points (baseline before exercise challenge, the point of maximal exertion, and after an exercise challenge) allowed for the exploration of the transcriptomic response to exercise and recovery in female patients with ME/CFS, as compared to healthy controls (HCs). Under maximal exertion, ME/CFS patients did not show significant changes in gene expression, while HCs demonstrated altered functional gene networks related to signaling and integral functions of their immune cells. During the recovery period (commonly during onset of PEM), female ME/CFS patients showed dysregulated immune signaling pathways and dysfunctional cellular responses to stress. The unique functional pathways identified provide a foundation for future research efforts into the disease, as well as for potential targeted treatment options. This study was supported by NIH award 1R15NS087604-01A1 and Presidential Faculty Research and Development Grant (PFRDG17) from Nova Southeastern University (all awarded to LN). Dorothy Mackay: A Forgotten Female Pioneer in Archaeology

    Get PDF
In 2022, the author of this paper came across four letters regarding epigraphic documentation of some elite tombs in the Theban necropolis, Egypt, written by Dorothy Mackay and addressed to Alan H. Gardiner, at the archive of the Griffith Institute, University of Oxford. The author of the letters was the wife of Ernest Mackay (1880–1943), a British archaeologist best known for his later work on the Indus Valley Civilisation, who was excavating on the Theban west bank between 1913 and 1916. However, as further investigation revealed, Dorothy, until recently an obscure figure, was an accomplished scholar in her own right, who worked together with her husband, acted as a curator of two museums, and published extensively in times when it was far from easy for women to obtain an education, let alone conduct research. Despite that, the only recent sources discussing Dorothy and her scholarly accomplishments lack some vital details on her life. The aim of this contribution is to provide some further information and context on Dorothy Mackay and her research in the first half of the twentieth century

Opening to the public or new orthodoxy? (OTEVÍRÁNÍ SE VEŘEJNOSTI NEBO „NOVÁ ORTODOXIE“?)

This paper introduces the anthology „Museums for the People?“ which contains a provocative and controversial essay by Josie Appleton and replies by other scholars. Appleton argues that museums find themselves between the Scylla of right-wing economic principles and the Charybda of cultural leftism. The present author critically engages with Appleton‘s arguments, highlighting her positive contribution, but disagreeing with her conclusions. Finally, the museum landscape of Great Britain is compared to and contrasted with that of Central Europe
