Genetic and molecular characterization of mating type genes in Cochliobolus sativus
Genetic and molecular approaches were used to characterize the mating type (MAT) genes in Cochliobolus sativus. One hundred and four ascospore progeny derived from a cross of C. sativus isolates ND93-1 (MAT-1) X ND9OPr (MAT-2) were backcrossed with their parents to determine mating type, but only five progeny produced pseudothecia with asci and/or ascospores. When degenerate primers from the conserved high mobility group (HMG) protein domain encoded by the MAT-2 gene in Cochliobolus species were used in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with genomic DNA of C. sativus as templates, an amplicon of predicted size was amplified only from MAT-2 isolates. The presence of a MAT-2 homolog in these MAT-2 isolates was confirmed by Southern hybridization with the HMG box as a probe. Additionally, the presence or absence of the HMG homolog in the progeny segregated in a 1:1 ratio, as expected for the single gene control of mating type. Using primers based on the conserved regions at the 5' and 3' flanks of the idiomorphs in the MAT genes of other Cochliobolus species, the full-length MAT-1 and MAT-2 idiomorphs were cloned by PCR from C. sativus isolates ND93-1 and ND9OPr, respectively. DNA sequence analysis indicated that these two idiomorphs are organized in a manner similar to their respective counterparts in other Cochliobolus species. DNA hybridization and PCR amplification analysis of 54 field isolates of C. sativus collected worldwide showed that both mating types exist in populations round the world. The low frequency of successful backcrosses of progeny to parents in the ND93-1 X ND9OPr cross, combined with the fact that many crosses between isolates of opposite mating type are unsuccessful, suggests that genetic factors other than MAT genes affect the fertility of the fungus.Steffenson, Brian; Zhong, Shaobin. Electro-Fenton-Based Membrane System for Organic Micropollutant Removal: New Trend and Prospect
Special Issue: Electrified Membranes for Environmental
Applications.
Published: July 20, 2023Electro-Fenton-based membrane (EFM) technologies are promising for removing micropollutants in wastewater bearing several benefits such as minimized chemical input, accelerated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and improved ROS utilization efficiency, thanks to the enhanced mass transfer and effectively enlarged electroactive area. However, the complex mechanism and synergies between electro-Fenton reactions and membrane confinement remain unclear; gaining such information would be much beneficial for rational catalyst/membrane design, system optimization, and further application in actual water conditions. In this Perspective, we systematically describe the membrane compositions, multiple reaction pathways, and advances in EFM systems. Then, we proposed some promising hybrid systems that exhibit great synergies in maximizing purification efficiency. Finally, this perspective provides a roadmap for the future development of EFM systems with low cost and high efficiency by outlining the advanced membrane material design, coupling processes, and integrated device design.Shuang Zhong, Zhong-Shuai Zhu, Xiaoguang Duan, and Shaobin Wan
Upscaled wood@MoS(2)/Fe(3)O(4) bulk catalysts for sustainable catalytic water pollutant removal
Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) play a pivotal role in purifying contaminated water and securing drinking water safety. Transition metal-based materials are highly effective AOP catalysts, while their applications are limited by their poor stability in the oxidative environment. In this study, we developed a composite catalyst, molybdenum disulfide/ferric oxide (MoS₂/Fe₃O₄), to evaluate its catalytic performance and explore its underlying mechanisms in peroxymonosulfate activation. The powder composite was successfully loaded onto an engineered wood substrate, creating a monolith wood@MoS₂/Fe₃O₄ composite for large-scale practical applications. The engineered bulk catalyst exhibits exceptional versatility and stability in wastewater treatment, maintaining nearly 100% removal efficiency over continuous operation for 144 hours. These findings underscore the significant potential of wood-loaded nanomaterials for cost-effective wastewater treatment.Lingli Zhu, Wei Ren, Ya Liu, Zhong-Shuai Zhu, Shuang Zhong, Shaobin Wang, and Xiaoguang Dua
The following work deals with the thesis of „creepyness“ in Chinese Avant-garde painting. With the help of colours symbolism and a focus on the colour red, the author tries to pinpoint the weird feeling an observer is subject to, when looking at certain pictures of Chinese Avant-garde paintings.
First of all, this thesis highlights the significance of the word „creepyness“ itself linguistically. Then it defines the word according to Sigmund Freud. Freud wrote an article about the topic „Das Unheimliche“ in 1919. His theory was, if there is something unkown or close, who comes forward, the person feels uncomfortable.
Following the introductory chaters the biographies and the works of three Chinese Avant-garde artists are discussed. In the case of Yang Shaobin (born 1963), the reader will experience the colour red as issueing emotions of violence. Liu Wei (born 1965) on the other hand shows, how his dealing with red becomes a theme of sexuality and irony. Last but not least Zhao Yongbo (born 1964) uses red to express degradation and degeneration.
A capter on the theory of colours by Johannes Itten will be found and the imagery of different colours, using Feng Shui concludes the study
An adsorption-catalysis pathway toward sustainable application of mesoporous carbon nanospheres for efficient environmental remediation
Published: September 9, 2020Large-surface area carbon materials have attracted a great deal of attention recently due to their promising applications in adsorption, energy storage, and catalysis. In this study, a green and sustainable wastewater treatment strategy, involving preadsorption of mesoporous carbon nanospheres (MCNS) with water contaminants and subsequent advanced oxidation of preadsorbed molecules and an additional water contaminant, is studied for the treatment of wastewater and regeneration of MCNS simultaneously. Here, MCNS were facilely synthesized, which demonstrated high efficiency in adsorptive removal of neutral, cationic, and anionic organic water contaminants. MCNS with preadsorbed contaminant molecules were found to be highly active catalysts for the peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-activated removal of phenol in wastewater. Meanwhile, the pre-adsorbed organic contaminants in MCNS were also removed by PMS, leading to a recleaned surface for subsequent adsorptive removal of the water contaminant. Various parameters in adsorption and catalytic degradation were studied to elucidate the performance of MCNS as well as the adsorption and degradation mechanism. The recyclability of MCNS for multiple adsorption−catalysis runs makes the process green, sustainable, and cost-effective without introducing any secondary contaminants.Muhammad Rizwan Azhar, Yasir Arafat, Yijun Zhong, Mehdi Khiadani, Moses O. FeOCl Nanoparticles Loaded onto Oxygen-Enriched Carbon Nanotubes and Nickel-Foam-Based Cathodes for the Electro-Fenton Degradation of Pollutants
Published: June 24, 2022Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) are a class of promising technologies for wastewater remediation. The challenge of EAOPs is the in situ generation and activation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to evolve reactive oxygen species (ROS) simultaneously with low energy consumption and high performances. In this work, we designed an EAOP system, coupling FeOCl nanoparticles on oxygen-enriched carbon nanotubes (O-CNTs) and a nickel foam (FeOCl/O-CNTs/NF) cathode for electro-Fenton (EF) reactions and an IrO2/Ti anode for anodic oxidation (AO) simultaneously. Specifically, the defects and oxygen functional groups on O-CNTs introduced by a modified Hummers’ method could induce the charge redistribution of O-CNTs for outstanding two-electron oxygen-reduction-reaction performances (H2O2 selectivity of 73%) and provide more anchoring sites for the loading of active cocatalyst nanoparticles. Thus, abundant FeOCl nanoparticles were successfully loaded onto O-CNTs. Such a FeOCl/O-CNTs/NF cathode exhibited a high H2O2 production rate of 95 mmol gcat −1 h−1 because of the improved exposure of catalytic active sites supported on nickel foam to attain a large specific surface area. •OH was generated from H2O2 via both heterogeneous and homogeneous EF processes induced by the FeOCl/OCNTs/ NF cathode and leached ferrous ions accordingly. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was completely removed within 30 min at a low specific energy consumption of 0.024 kWh g−1 SMX−1. Thus, the simultaneous FeOCl/O-CNTs/NF-based EF system and AO provide an efficient and cost-effective technology for organic contaminant remediation.Shuang Zhong, Zhong-Shuai Zhu, Peng Zhou, Lei Shi, Xiaoguang Duan, Bo Lai, and Shaobin Wan

Catalytic transformation of microplastics to functional carbon for catalytic peroxymonosulfate activation: Conversion mechanism and defect of scavenging
Plastic wastes were catalytically transformed into different structured carbons as effective catalysts for peroxymonosulfate activation to degrade organic pollutants in water and the catalytic conversion mechanism was comprehensively investigated. A salt template-based carbonization approach was successfully developed to catalytically converting high-density polyethylene (HDPE) into diverse carbon materials, such as core-shell carbon composites, nanosheets, and their hybrids. The morphology and proportions of structure defective carbon were found to be controlled by a NiCl2 to HDPE ratio. Carbon nanosheets performed excellent catalytic efficiency in peroxymonosulfate activation toward phenol oxidation, due to a high content of reactive defects via a nonradical electron-transfer mechanism. More importantly, deliberate experiment design and kinetic analyses were employed to illustrate the artifact of radical scavengers (e.g., ethanol) in mechanistic investigation for nonradical/radical reaction. This work provides an upcycle approach for waste plastics into carbocatalysts and new insight to the conversion process and advanced water purification.Shiying Ren, Xin Xu, Zhong-Shuai Zhu, Yangyang Yang, Wenjie Tian, Kunsheng Hu, Shuang Zhong, Jiabao Yi, Xiaoguang Duan, Shaobin Wan
