Chalcopyrite Magnetic Semiconductors: An AB–Initio Study of Their Structural, Electronic and Magnetic Properties
Stimulated by recent experimental observations of room{temperature ferromagnetism of MnxCd1−xGeP2, we investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of these systems as a function of Mn concentration by means of first–principles density-functional-theory-based codes. Moreover, we investigate the effect of the anion substitution (P vs As) in Mn-rich chalcopyirites. Our calculations indicate that the antiferromagnetic alignment is the most stable ordering for all the systems studied, at variance with that experimentally reported. Moreover, we find that there is a slight reduction of the total magnetic moment per Mn atom from ∼5 μB in all the Cd-rich P-based chalcopyrites to ∼4 μB in the Mn–rich MnGeP2 and MnGeAs2 systems

<i>Bacillus subtilis</i> Strain YJ-15, Isolated from the Rhizosphere of Wheat Grown under Saline Conditions, Increases Soil Fertility and Modifies Microbial Community Structure
Soil salinization during wheat cultivation considerably diminishes soil fertility and impedes wheat growth, primarily due to rhizosphere microbial community changes. Our study investigates the application of Bacillus subtilis YJ-15, a strain isolated from the rhizosphere of wheat cultivated in salinized soil, as a soil remediation agent. This strain has demonstrated significant salt tolerance, disease suppression capabilities, and growth-promoting attributes in previous studies. The wheat rhizosphere was examined to assess the impact of Bacillus subtilis YJ-15 on microbial community composition and soil fertility. Fertility of soil in saline soil was significantly increased by inoculating wheat with YJ-15. The microbial community structure within the wheat rhizosphere inoculated with Bacillus subtilis YJ-15 was analyzed through sequencing on the Illumina MiSeq platform. Phyla Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were identified as the dominant bacteria. Basidiomycota, Mortierellomycota, and Ascomycota dominated the fungal phyla. Among the bacterial genera, Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter, and Bacillus were predominant. The predominant fungal genera included Alternaria, Cephalotrichum, Mortierella, and Chaetomium. A significant increase in Gaiella and Haliangium levels was observed in the YJ group compared to the control group. Additionally, the fungal genera Epicoccum, Sporidiobolus, and Lecythophora have significantly increased in YJ abundance. One of the potential benefits of Bacillus subtilis YJ-15 in the cultivation of wheat on salinized land is its ability to enhance the rhizosphere microbial community structure and improve soil fertility

Long-term therapy with sorafenib is associated with pancreatic atrophy
Background: Although the short-term adverse effects of sorafenib are well known, few data exist on long-term toxicity. The objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of pancreatic atrophy among a cohort of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who were treated with sorafenib for >= 2 y. Methods: Between March 2007 and December 2013, 31 patients with HCC who were treated with sorafenib for >= 2 y were identified. The effect of pancreatic atrophy and enhancement on incidence of adverse events, tumor response, and overall survival (OS) were assessed. Results: Thirty-one patients with HCC were treated with sorafenib for >= 2 y and met inclusion criteria; 11 patients (35.5%) were Barcelona-clinic liver cancer stage B, whereas 20 patients (64.5%) were Barcelona-clinic liver cancer stage C. Median duration of treatment with sorafenib was 35.2 mo. Pancreatic atrophy and a decrease in pancreatic enhancement occurred in 24 patients (77.4%) and 15 patients (48.4%), respectively. On the basis of the modified response evaluation criteria in solid tumors, four patients (12.9%) had a complete response, 10 patients (32.3%) had a partial response, and 17 patients (54.8%) had stable disease. Patients treated with sorafenib with pancreatic atrophy had a median OS of 49.4 mo (95% confidence interval, 41.2-57.5 mo) compared with 31.2 mo (95% confidence interval, 25.7-36.7 mo) among patients who did not develop pancreatic atrophy (P = 0.009). In contrast, survival was not associated with decreased versus normal enhancement of the pancreas (OS, 47.7 mo versus 41.7 mo, respectively; P = 0.739). Conclusions: Pancreatic atrophy occurred in many HCC patients after 2 y of treatment with sorafenib. Patients who experienced pancreatic atrophy had a better tumor response and OS. The rs1990760 polymorphism within the IFIH 1 locus is not associated with Graves' disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Addison's disease
Background: Three genes have been confirmed as major joint susceptibility genes for endocrine autoimmune disease:human leukocyte antigen class II, cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 and protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor type 22. Recent studies showed that a genetic variation within the interferon induced helicase domain 1 (IFIH1) locus (rs1990760 polymorphism) is an additional risk factor in type 1 diabetes and Graves' disease (GD). Methods: The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of the rs1990760 polymorphism within the IFIH1 gene in German patients with GD (n=258), Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT,n=106), Addison's disease (AD,n=195) and healthy controls (HC,n=227) as well as in 55 GD families (165 individuals, German) and 100 HT families (300 individuals, Italian). Furthermore, the interaction between rs1990760 polymorphism with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) risk haplotype DQ2(DQA*0501-DQB*0201), the risk haplotypes DQ2/DQ8 (DQA*0301-DQB*0302) and the status of thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb), thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) and TSH receptor antibody (TRAb) in patients and families were analysed. Results:No significant differences were found between the allele and genotype frequencies for rs1990760 IFIH1 polymorphism in patients with GD, HT, AD and HC. Also no differences were observed when stratifying the IFIH1 rs1990760 polymorphism for gender, presence or absence of thyroid antibodies (GD:TRAb and HT:TPOAb/TgAb) and HLA risk haplotypes (DQ2:for GD and HT, DQ2/DQ8:for AD). Furthermore the transmission analysis in GD and HT families revealed no differences in alleles transmission for rs1990760 IFIH1 from parents with or without HLA risk haplotype DQ2 to the affected offspring. In contrast, by dividing the HT parents according to the presence or absence of thyroid Ab titers, mothers and fathers both positive for TPOAb/TgAb overtransmitted the allele A of IFIH1 rs1990760 to their HT affected offspring (61.8% vs 38.2%;p=0.05;corrected p [pc]=0.1). However, these associations did not remain statistically significant after correction of the p-values. Conclusion: In conclusion, our data suggest, no contribution from IFIH1 rs1990760 polymorphism to the pathogenesis of either Graves' disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Addison's disease in our study populations. However, in order to exclude a possible influence of the studied polymorphism in specified subgroups within patients with autoimmune thyroid disease, further investigations in larger populations are needed

Public perception of the appropriateness of COVID-19 management strategies and level of disturbances in daily activities: A focus on educational level
Background This study investigated the association between public perception of the appropriateness of management strategies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic and the level of disturbances in daily activities reported by the general population. Methods This cross-sectional study used Korea Community Health Survey conducted from August to November 2020. Public perception of COVID-19 management strategies included those implemented by the government (central, city or provincial, and administrative districts), the mass media, regional medical institutions, and neighbors. The subjective level of disturbances in daily activities was measured using a 0–100 numeric rating scale developed by Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Multivariable linear regression analysis was used. A subgroup analysis was conducted based on education level. Results The present study analyzed 211,353 participants. Compared to individuals who perceived that the management strategies implemented during the pandemic was ‘highly appropriate,’ those who reported ‘mediocre appropriateness’ (β: -1.96, p-value: <0.001) or ‘low appropriateness’ (β: -3.60, p-value: 0.010) reported higher levels of subjective disturbances. The appropriateness of measures implemented by the mass media was associated with levels of subjective disturbances felt by individuals of lower education with statistical significance, whereas that applied by the mass media and the government were important in those with higher education. Conclusions The findings suggest the importance of public perception of management strategies when implementing containment policies and minimizing its disturbances on daily lives is essential. © 2023 Ju et al.
