Smartphone-based fluorescent sensing platforms for point-of-care ocular lactoferrin detection
Lactoferrin is a critical glycoprotein that accounts for the major component in tear protein composition. Tear lactoferrin has been indicated as a potential biomarker in ocular health screening, such as dry eye disease diagnosis. Fluorescent biosensors are a desirable alternative to current diagnostic methods, due to their high selectivity and sensitivity, and rapid and cost-effective detection technologies at point-of-care (POC) platforms. Herein, fluorescent lactoferrin sensing is examined and applied on nitrocellulose membrane, capillary tube, and contact lens platforms in cooperation with a developed smartphone software for data collection and analysis. Fluorescent sensors based on trivalent terbium (TbCl3) are integrated into different platforms, including nitrocellulose membranes, capillary tubes, and contact lenses, and tested in artificial tear fluid. A bespoke 3D printed readout device integrated with a smartphone camera was employed for image acquisition and readout. The detection range of the lactoferrin sensors could be varied from 0 to 5 mg mL−1 with a strong linear relation and yielded a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.57 mg mL−1 for lateral flow sensing, 0.12 mg mL−1 for capillary tube sensing, and 0.44 mg mL−1 for contact lens sensing. The contact lens sensor obtained the highest linear regression, while the capillary tube sensor achieved a lowest LOD. This work could pave the way towards accessible lactoferrin monitoring at POC and could induce hospitalization at the UK national health service (NHS) for future clinical trials and examinations

N-GLYCOPEPTIDEATLAS: A DATABASE FOR SPECTRA LIBRARY OF N-LINKED GLYCOSYLAYION
In the field of glycoproteomic glycosylation and glycopeptides are essential for people to study. It is even more imperative to build a database that contains all the N-linked glycopeptides and its corresponding mass spectrum for researchers' reference. An interactive diagram was added to the N-Glycosite Atlas database. Two evaluation system was created to generate the standard mass spectra for the database. The number of mass spectrum needed for generating a stable standard mass spectrum was determined. The similarity evaluation system can truly reflect the similarity of the two mass spectra, and this evaluation system is crucial for updating the spectra database. And the peak credibility can truly reflect how credible of a given peak in the mass spectrum. In conclusion, the algorithm is useful for generating a standard mass spectrum. And will help future studies in this area
Electric vehicles in China: past, present and future
Abstract As the world's major car-producing countries and companies are increasing research and development efforts on vehicle electrification, electric vehicles (EVs) are developing rapidly from the development and testing stage to commodity production and application stage. As the largest global vehicle manufacturer and new vehicle market, China has considered the EV as one of the key tools to solve the increasing energy security issues and environmental pollution issues in the road transport sector. However, as a new market, what the challenges and key factors are in the EV promotion process is still not clear. The main objective of this dissertation is to answer this question through evaluating the effectiveness of EV development in China on energy savings, environment protection and policy demonstration. Instead of covering all determinants, this dissertation mainly focuses on four key aspects: the current statues and issues surrounding China’s EV development and promotion; the energy consumption and carbon emissions of EVs based on the power mix both at the state level and regional level; the potential diffusion trend of the EV penetration and the sensitivities of the key impact factors; and the evaluation of the effectiveness of the EV demonstration program in China. Applying a mix of qualitative and quantitative research methods (such as lifecycle analysis, diffusion model and evaluation framework), this dissertation found that, in addition to the technology limitation of the EV, there are still many issues surrounding the environmental, industry, infrastructure and policy aspects, which have hindered EV development in China. To accelerate EV promotion, more comprehensive and diversified policy strategies should be developed instead only focusing on the financial subsidies. The charging infrastructures, for example, showed a more important role in EV penetration than the pricing factors, based on current market conditions. For the energy and environmental motivations, although the pure battery EV (BEV) can achieve a great reduction in fossil energy consumption, its benefits in carbon emission savings is not obvious due to China’s heavy reliance on coal-fired power generation. The plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) seems to be the right choice as a transit technology, according to its performance with emission savings in the current market situation. An evaluation framework has been developed in this dissertation to discuss the effectiveness of the EV demonstration program in China, and help to guide a more balanced development of EVs by considering comprehensive aspects, which include the EV industry, market conditions, policy support, and environmental impacts. Ultimately, this dissertation provides recommendations for the policy implementation for developing a diversified and flexible policy strategy for the EV penetration in China based on different technology choices (EV types), different situations (national and regional) and different timelines (short-term, mid-term and long-term)

A Battery-operated Portable Standard Lead ECG Monitor with Abnormal Heart Condition Detection System for Dogs
Long term monitoring the dog's heart condition is the best way to prevent being unable to treat the dog's heart failure in time when it occurs. Although, electro-cardio activity has been discovered by French scientist Mattencci in 1842, but there hasn't been any proper device developed so far for long term ECG (electrocardiogram) monitoring of cardiac dogs. Therefore, this paper has proposed an ECG monitor specially designed for dogs to fill this gap. The ECG monitor proposed is a 3-lead ECG monitoring system with diagnosis software that can detect heart failure, tachycardia, bradycardia, and arrhythmia according to dog's ECG signal. It mainly consists of 3 active dry electrodes that acquire dog's ECG signal; an analog front-end circuit that amplifies and filters the acquired signal; and a processor that further filters and analyzes the signal, and then it will determine if the dog is having an abnormal heart condition; finally, all results is displayed on a LCD (liquid crystal display)
