Clarifying the concept of disease: how science determines the biologically normal from the abnormal

    No full text
This is an investigation of the modern concept of disease and an explication of the concept consistent with scientific and medical usage. The core notion involved in the modern concept of disease (taken broadly as pathology) is biological abnormality in form or function, for a circumscribed biological system, contrasted against a theoretical sense of normal form or function. Chapter 2 presents an overview of science, its products and how these are produced. This sketch is limited and intended only to clarify my own view of science in as far as this is important for the main thesis. Chapter 3 discusses the concepts of normality and abnormality, particularly as it is used in biomedical science. I argue that science offers a theoretical sense of abnormality importantly different from statistical or conventional senses of abnormality. Chapter 4 begins with an examination of the normativist /naturalist debate on the concept of disease. I then offer my explication of disease and the criteria necessary for a disease claim to be legitimate. Chapter 4 closes with an extended discussion of interesting and controversial examples of disease claims aimed at clarifying and challenging my own position.Item withdrawn by Mark Zulauf ([email protected]) on 2011-11-22T18:59:34Z Item was in collections: University of Illinois Theses & Dissertations (ID: 1) No. of bitstreams: 2 Zech PhD thesis 11-20-11 V2-1.docx: 366344 bytes, checksum: 256a84683bfb04ebb3f4f42f9d75b91a (MD5) Zech_Loren.pdf: 1212136 bytes, checksum: 59fdca1caa50e0bb0cadf238234d4ede (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2012-02-01T00:54:29Z (GMT). Infernal retainers: Dante and the juridical tradition

    No full text
This dissertation examines the doctrinal relationship between Dante and contemporary legal scholars, particularly Cino da Pistoia. The study positions Dante's work within ongoing debates between French (Orleanese) and Italian (Bolognese) jurists at the turn of the fourteenth century, arguing that Dante's representations of positive law and its practitioners arise out of his longstanding engagement with the Justinian Corpus.Ph.D.Includes abstractVitaIncludes bibliographical referencesby Loren Michael Valterz

The groundbreaking guide to the 40 best colleges you've never heard of--colleges that willchange your life Choosing the right college has never been more important--or more difficult. For the latest edition of this classic college guide, Hilary Masell Oswald conducted her own tours of top schools and in-depth interviews, building on Loren Pope's original to create a totally updated, more expansive work. Organized by geographic region, every profile includes a wealth of vital information, including admissions standards, distinguishing facts about the curriculum, extracurricular activities, and what faculty say about their jobs. Masell Oswald also offers a new chapter on how students with learning disabilities can find schools that fit their needs. For every prospective college student searching for more than football and frat parties, Colleges That Change Lives will prove indispensable. Fully revised and updated by education journalist Hilary Oswald, Colleges That Change Lives remains the definite guide for high school students (and their parents) who are looking for more in their college education than football, frat parties, and giant lectures. Building on the foundation of landmark author Loren Pope, Oswald spent more than a year visiting 40 colleges, speaking with students, faculty, and alumni to create these vivid and concise portraits. Featuring a new introduction, a new Required Reading section, and a new chapter on learning disabilities, the book is organized into five geographic regions (Northeast, South, Midwest, Southwest, Northwest) to make for easy browsing, and urban, suburban, and rural campuses are all featured. There's also an alphabetical index of colleges. Each profile includes admissions standards as well as relevant statistics to make your decision easier, including where the school ranks in post-graduate grants and fellowships, what percentage of students go on to graduate school or further education, distinguishing facts about the curriculum, percentage of professors who have terminal degrees in their field, even what activities are available to students and what they're likely to do on weekends

The work of establishing additional bench marks throughout the State for the use of engineers and others was confirmed during the field season of 1919. It was in immediate charge of Mr. Loren P. Plummer, Jr., who, under the direction of Mr. C. C. Vermeule, had in previous years run many of the lines described in Bulletin 17 and 19. The work was done with the same degree of accuracy as obtained in the earlier levels and as set forth in detail in these bulletins
