Internationalisation of Spanish fashion brand Zara

    No full text
Zara is one of the world’s most successful fashion retailers operating in 59 countries. However, there is little research about the firm in English as the majority of publications have been written in Spanish. This paper seeks to address this gap in the literature by examining the internationalisation process of Zara. This study adopts an in-depth case approach based on extensive secondary research. Literature published in both English and Spanish has been reviewed, including company documents such as annual reports. The paper starts with a brief overview of the global textile and clothing industry, followed by the case study of Zara. The main part of the case examines the key aspects in the internationalisation of Zara namely: motives for internationalisation, market selection, entry strategies, and international marketing strategies. In the final section, comparisons are made between Zara and two of its main competitors, H&M and Gap

A Global Network and its Local Ties. Restructuring of the Benetton Group

    No full text
The paper investigates the change in strategy of the Benetton Group, since the mid nineties, in face of the severe intensive competition in the international fashion market. New competitors, in particular the European brands Zara, Mango and H&M, have challenged the Benetton position in the Italian and the European clothing market and have pushed the Group towards cost reduction through globalization of his suppliers. Benetton is a vertically integrated producer that controls (in different ways) the whole value chain from textile raw materials to the sales to the consumers. Till 2000 Benetton made part of its production in its own factories and through a wide network of domestic sub-contractors, mainly specialized in sewing. Now Benetton has drastically moved to a new strategy, abandoning Italy and organizing production around a dual supply chain: close locations (East Europe and North Africa) for quick production and far away locations (Asia) for more standardised products. The paper discusses also the redefinition of competences for the Treviso clothing district, where Benetton traditional sub-contractors have been in few years, drastically curtailed. Benetton restructuring marks the transition to a new network of competences between agents in the district.Global value chains, Internationalization, Benetton, Apparel

FLO11 gene length and transcriptional level affect biofilm-forming ability of wild flor strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    No full text
In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, FLO11 encodes an adhesin that is associated with different phenotypes, such as adherence to solid surfaces, hydrophobicity, mat and air-liquid biofilm formation. In the present study, we analysed FLO11 allelic polymorphisms and FLO11-associated phenotypes of 20 flor strains. We identified 13 alleles of different lengths, varying from 3.0 to 6.1 kb, thus demonstrating that FLO11 is highly polymorphic. Two alleles of 3.1 and 5.0 kb were cloned into strain BY4742 to compare the FLO11-associated phenotypes in the same genetic background. We show that there is a significant correlation between biofilm-forming ability and FLO11 length both in different and in the same genetic backgrounds. Moreover, we propose a multiple regression model that allows prediction of air-liquid biofilm-forming ability on the basis of transcription levels and lengths of FLO11 alleles in a population of S. cerevisiae flor strains. Considering that transcriptional differences are only partially explained by the differences in the promoter sequences, our results are consistent with the hypothesis that FLO11 transcription levels are strongly influenced by genetic background and affect biofilm-forming ability

Type material. HOLOTYPE. Mexico: Tabasco, 18°31′40.25″N– 93°19′43.95″W, 05/XI/2014, col. Ku, M.A.M., 1♂ (MZUSP 39351). PARATYPES. Mexico: Tabasco, 18°31′40.25″N– 93°19′43.95″W, 05/XI/2014, col. Ku, M.A.M., 5♂, 3♀ (CCDB 5461). Diagnosis. Petasma: In dorsal view, the proximal region occupies 3/4 of the distolateral projection length, posterior margins slightly rounded. The distal region extends for 1/4 of the distolateral projection length. The opening is wide and rounded, with a convex row of teeth. In ventral view, the row of teeth of the distal region of the posterior margin invades the proximal region and becomes sparser until it reaches its wider part. In this species the carina in the ventral surface of the proximal region is absent. The appendix masculina is subcircular but less rounded than in X. kroyeri and has no prominent apex, but its posterior margin is covered with spines. The rounded projection is the widest of all species. In ventral view there are several rows of spines which cover the central concave surface completely. Etymology. The new species name is in honor of our colleague Dr. Raymond Bauer, a recognized carcinologist who has devoted his career to the study of the biology of shrimps, especially from Gulf of Mexico, the type locality of the new species herein described. Type locality. Tabasco, Mexico. Remarks. A full description and figures of X. baueri and list of additional non-type material examined is given by Carvalho-Batista et al. The distal region is as long as wide and bears a convex row of teeth and the opening, which is wide and rounded. The posterior rounded projection is longer and narrower than in X. kroyeri. In ventral view the spines are more prominent in the margins and become smaller over the central concave surface. Etymology. The specific epithet “dincao” is given in the honour of the late Dr. Fernando D′Incao, in recognition of his contribution to the Brazilian Carcinology, in particular to the study of penaeoid shrimps from the Brazilian coast. It is to be treated as a noun in apposition. Type locality. Maragogi, Alagoas, Brazil. Remarks.
