Seed germination of Atriplex undulata under saline and alkaline conditions
In this study the germination response of seeds of Atriplex undulata (Chenopodiaceae), a native of Argentina, to saline and alkaline conditions was evaluated. This species has potential as a rehabilitation crop for saline soils and is used as salt land pasture. The study involved three aspects: (1) germination response to three temperature regimes (20, 25 and 30 C); (2) the effects of saline (NaCl) and alkaline (Na2CO3) stresses, osmotic potential(0, -1, -2 MPa) and the removal of the bracteole on germination; (3) the recovery of germination with and without the bracteole following exposure to a high level of alkalinity and salinity stress. The best germination temperature was 20°C. There were no significant differences in the response to salt and alkali treatments. Seeds failed to germinate at -2 MPa, while -1 MPa reduced germination, more so for the seeds with the bracteole removed. After a pre-treatment with salt or alkali stress, seeds exposed to alkali showed lower germination percentage if bracteoles were removed from the fruitFil: Piovan, María Julia. Community Structure and Spatial Zonation of Benthic Macrofauna in Mudflats of the Bahía Blanca Estuary, Argentina
The variations in composition of the benthic community and specific physical variables of mudflats in the Bahía Blanca Estuary, across the intertidal gradient, are described. An upper mudflat, with a steeper slope and higher densities of crab burrows exists seaward of a gently-sloped lower zone, where the density of crab burrows progressively diminishes. Monthly samples were collected from both sections of mudflats to analyze the composition of macrozoobenthos, as well as physical and chemical variables in sediments. Neohelice granulata and Polydora sp. were representative species of the upper mudflat. N. granulata had significantly higher densities in January (236 ± 136 individuals per square meter [ind m−2]) and February (200 ± 68 ind m−2), and Polydora sp. had significantly higher densities in May (491 ± 398 ind m−2). N. granulata did not appear in samples from the lower mudflat. There, densities of Laeonereis culveri were significantly higher, with peaks in June (8604 ± 3341 ind m−2) and October (7604 ± 1908 ind m−2). In the upper section, a single peak was observed in September (2455 ± 1281 ind m−2). Chlorophyll-a concentrations in sediments from the upper mudflat showed a single peak in July (10.1 ± 0.77 μg cm−2). In the lower zone, two peaks were observed in July (10.4 ± 0.18 μg cm−2) and March (10.5 ± 3.1 μg cm−2). These occurred 2 to 3 months before the peak densities of L. culveri were observed. Bulk density, water content of sediments, and shear strength were significantly different between zones, suggesting sediments are more compact and less hydrated in the upper section and hence more resistant to erosion. Major differences were found between the upper and the lower section of mudflats in terms of their biological communities, their seasonal patterns of activity, and the characteristics of the physical environment leading to erodibility.Fil: Zapperi, Georgina María. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Land cover changes in tidal salt marshes of the Bahía Blanca estuary (Argentina) during the past 40 years
The present work describes land cover changes in the inner section of Canal Principal, in the Bahía Blanca estuary. The study area is subjected to a rising relative sea level, large interanual variations in rainfall, and recent changes human in land use. We used historical aerial photographs, high resolution satellite images, and GIS to quantify changes in land cover for the years 1967, 1996, and 2005. The replacement of Sarcocornia perennis marshes and halophytic shrub-like steppes by mudflats is a recurring pattern through the area. We estimated a total loss to mudflats of 33 and 6% of the area of marshes and steppes, respectively, and it may reflect increased erosion of relict Holocene coastal terraces in response to a rising sea level. Human activities have played a significant role in reshaping coastal landscape, particularly in the harbor area. Fifty percent of the area originally covered by shrub-like steppes and 33% of the Sarcocornia perennis marshes were replaced by human land uses. Major changes correspond to dredged spoil deposition and landfilling. One of the most striking changes observed is the increase of the area covered by Spartina alterniflora marshes. This type of replacement suggests the occurrence of depositional environments that, at least locally, allow bed elevation and vegetation growth. In the harbor area, an enhanced sedimentation may result from maintenance dredging. At the mouth of Maldonado channel, sediment deposition may occur during extraordinary heavy rainfall associated to El Niño.Fil: Pratolongo, Paula Daniela. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
